Chapter 3
Jack sat up in his bed. Looking around himself he could see other soldiers lying in identical beds. The smell of drugs and blood was overpowering and it left him light headed. The man next to him was asleep and snoring, his chest rising and falling, something that relieved him. Jack raised his fingers to his temples only to touch a damp bandage. He brought his fingers back down to see blood staining skin. Suddenly his whole body started to shake uncontrollably, his hair sticking up on end, the air was too heavy to breath and his head felt empty. A weight rested on his right shoulder. "Breath, Jack, breath!" said a medic, "Slowly, slow.." Gradually the spasms faded until they stopped completely. Jack was handed a cup of something, which he drank and hated, and then was given a biscuit, which was stale and tasteless. For a couple of hours he sat there staring into space, drifting in and out of consciousness , until Drake came in to tell him that the Colonel wanted to talk with him and that he had to get himself ready. With help from a doctor, Jack got himself dressed and made his way to the Colonel's room, where he sat and looked at maps all day. He was doing that as Jack sat down on the chair behind the desk, waiting for his leader to begin the conversation. Finally, the big man looked up from his work. "I see you are on your way to recovery" he said. Jack nodded mutely, not knowing what to say. "Yes Sir, I am. And can I just thank you for saving me on the battlefield, I don't know what came over me, Sir." "Well I wouldn't be doing my job if I didn't." The Colonel reached over to grab something from a stack of papers. Quietly he started to write on it. Jack was puzzled, was the Colonel actually going to tell him something? Give him a task to do? "Excuse me Sir, but did you want me to do anything at all?" The Colonel looked up at him. "As a matter of fact, Jack, yes I do," he began, he removed his spectacles and looked intently at Jack's face. "I need you to take something from the Girls' camp."
"Pssssst, Ara!" Ara opened her eyes to see Kat leaning over her, torch trapped in her left fist. "It's your shift" Ara rubbed her eyes and nodded. Taking the torch from Kat, she walked to the top of the building, where she took her place to guard. The wind blew into her face and through her hair, freezing her nose, freezing her fingers. She lent on the balcony, listening to the silence of the city. Memories of the past came rushing back to her. Flowers in the Spring, colorful and bright when the sun would shine over them, their green leaves healthy with life, and the baby animals coming into the world ready to learn about the things around them, and birdsong being sung everywhere you went. The fiery colors of Autumn, when she used to collect the leaves and put them together in a collage, and then she would collect pine cones to put on the fire that she and her family would have every Sunday, and she and her friends would collect conkers and have competitions with them: Knock out Conker, Biggest Conker, Smallest Conker and others! And the best season of all, the cold temperatures of Winter would be when she and her friends would go out in the snow and have snowball fights and build snowmen, and then later on in the day she would come home and have a cup of Hot Cocoa which would warm her whole body. She sighed at the memories. Being a child was so good. Bang! Ara spun on her heels, just in time to see a silhouette. It must have known it was spotted because it took off running. "STOP!" she shouted, and ran after the person. Round corners and through alleyways, she ran, each second she was gaining more distance, slowly catching up with the person she was chasing.
Jack kept running. He had to get out of here, the line wasn't too far, once he was over that he was safe. But from the quickening steps he could hear happening behind him, he knew that if he didn't keep this up then he would get caught. He pushed himself on, willing his legs to go on a little more. He took deep breaths, steadying his pulse. He gripped onto the Hologram he was holding very tightly now, only just remembering not to grip too hard or he'll break it. Suddenly the steps behind him stopped. Maybe she gave up? Deciding that she must have, he placed his hands on his knees and bent over, breathing in sharp breaths. A minute in that position and he was ready to go again. Jack straightened, only to see a girl right in front of him. "Well isn't this interesting?" she said.
