Chapter 2

"We got another one!" Jack was lying on a moving surface. He could feel himself being carried on a board to a certain location. His senses came aware that he was being rocked aside gently, like a baby in a crib. The world was spinning above his head, disorientating and wondrous. The stars were spinning  and the voices were overlapping. Oceans of noises, orchestras of screams, schools of cries. It was overwhelming how everyone was creating commotion in some respect. Jack couldn't concentrate on one thing, not a voice, an object, a face. The world was blurry with all the colors mixing together, melting into one, until his vision darkened.

Ara was laying in the bed, her blanket covering her shoulders. She was resting on the crook of her arm, looking outside of her window. She faced the city in front of her, a demon to her. What used to be illuminated with lights is now black and all stars were gone. Emma's breath tickled her neck. She sighed.

"Is there something wrong?" Ara looked behind her shoulder; Emma was looking at her with her brown eyes, mysterious in the night.

"Just wondering if this war is actually necessary." A rustle and Emma was sat up straight, horror written on her face.

"You know what they did to us!" she snapped,

"You know how they used to treat us!"

"Yes but some of them are good men, men who did nothing, men who are innocent, men who wanted us for who we are!" Ara looked at Emma's face, waiting for a reaction. At last her girlfriend's shoulders relaxed and she lay back down.

"You remember me telling you about Elijah right? He was the love of my life. I felt like he was the one, like he was the one who was supposed to be in my life all this time.. And then one night he came home from the pub with another woman. I was there when he was fucking her! I was there while he was screwing somebody who wasn't me! I felt like I was being replaced, and then the next morning it was worse. He denied any recollection of the night before and so I had to re-tell the story to him." Tears were running down her face, racing down her cheek, soaking the pillow.

"I cannot forgive men for their nature, because they don't change, and we can't change that!" And with that, Emma turned to her other side to face away from Ara.
