Chapter 4
Jack completely froze. Her face was hidden by the dark, but he was actually face to face with a girl , someone who hates his guts, someone who killed his fellow soldiers in cold blood. He gritted his teeth together, a habit he has when he get angry.
"Get out of my way, or you will regret it!" The girl pulled out a gun and pointed it at him. She raised her eyes brows and questioned him with her eyes.
"Oh really? Because to be honest, you may have survived the grenades that we lay on you, but I am sure that you won't be able to survive a bullet in your skull." She looked down at his hand which was holding the hologram.
"Maybe you should hand that over?" she said. Jack stood there for a moment, looked down at the ground where she was standing and spat at her feet.
"You will have to kill me before I give this back!" The girl glared at him as she grabbed him by the arm, her sharp nails digging into his skin. For the first time he felt fear shake through his body.
"You're coming with me right now!" And he was being pulled into the night, through alleyways and doors. He stumbled behind her, his arm going numb from where she was gripping it. He could feel his blood running down his arm and onto the floor. Twice he fell and twice he was hauled back onto his feet, where he had to continue to struggle to keep up with the girl. Until they finally stopped in a tiny space. The crippling grip finally released him, leaving him to cradle his arm. The creaking, where the girl was stepping he presumed, told him that he was standing on something wooden. He must be in a shack he concluded, the musty, dank, smell telling him that it was old. Light flooded the room, allowing his eyes to tell him where he was. He was in a cottage (not a shack) and a lamp that was in a corner was lit up, illuminating the whole room. Inside the room there was a couch which was ragged with age, faded paintings, a crumbling chimney and a tattered rug. The girl was sitting on the couch, her back to him. She was taking her boots off and laying them on the floor next to the chimney. Her dark hair was pulled into a ponytail and it was all knotted together. He cleared his throat.
"Now what?" he said. The girl turned around to reveal her face for the first time. His mouth parted slightly.
"Aria?" he said. She nodded.
"Hey Jake" she said.
Jake was looking at her with an expression that said amazement. She hadn't thought she changed that much, she only dyed her hair. But then again, the last time they saw each other was four years ago.
"Last time I saw you your hair was brown!" he exclaimed.
"I decided to be a new person, I wanted to restart. I didn't want to be Aria anymore, a girl who saw herself as perfect and beautiful, I wanted to be Ara, someone who is brave. I'm not the same person as I was four years ago.." She looked away from him. Ara could here Jake approach her. The space on the couch next to her sank and she looked up to see him sitting next to her.
"I'm not the same person as I was four years ago either," he said, "The men in camp call me Jack, not Jake." Ara looked up at him in surprise.
"Are you actually serious?" she asked. Jake -or Jack- nodded.
"I changed my name because I wanted to have a fresh start. Nobody would take me seriously as Jake, but as Jack.. I'm respected at camp."
"Is that why you are stealing our Hologram?" Jack blushed. She suspected that he forgot all about the thing he was holding in his hand.
"The Colonel wants it so that he can erase anything that you girls know about our camp. He trusts me with things like these, and to be trusted like this by the Colonel is a great honor, so I must be getting back" He got up and started walking to the door.
"Wait."
Jack looked behind him. He didn't know what he was going to receive. An argument? A slap? He watched as Aria -Ara- walked up to him. He turned completely to face her.
"I don't like this war," she said, "It isn't solving anything, and if we don't end this soon then all humanity is going to die out!" Jack placed his free hand on her shoulder.
"We need to do something about this! Meet me here tomorrow night same time?" Jack contemplated all of the bad things that could happen if they were caught. But if they were careful maybe they could end this war together. At last he nodded.
"It was nice seeing you again Ara" he said. She smiled up at him.
"It was nice seeing you again, Jack" she replied.
