Chapter Twelve

Althea and Peter arrived at the cabin, but once they got there, the place didn't seem to have a single life form present. Confused, Althea walked out of the bushes and searched for any sign of her best friend and spiritual twin. But she couldn't find a single thing that linked to Ezra and turned toward Peter in anger.

"Where is he?!" Althea exclaimed. "You said he'd be here!"

"I thought he was, but I think that Alex and the rest are one step ahead of us. I don't know where they could have taken him."

"You better figure it out! Because if I lose my angel, then I'm going to kill you," Althea threatened.

Peter held his hands up in defense. Althea stepped into the cabin thinking that there might have been something in the small one-room cabin she might have missed. The minute she stepped inside, her eyes landed on something nailed to the stone chimney. Althea made her way over to the note and pulled it off.

Dear Althea,

If you want your little angel back, then come find us. I'm sure you can figure it out. We're close to the school, but we are up the road on a long stretch of concrete. You'll find an old run-down farmhouse. Go there, and maybe we'll keep your angel safe. If not, then things will get worse for both of you.

Sincerely,

Alex

Althea teared up; they'd taken Ezra to some old farmhouse, and she barely even remembered where it stood. She wanted so desperately to save him, but she couldn't risk getting near the Servants of Evil without proof that they would let Ezra go. She stepped outside as Peter was kicking some rocks around. She walked over to him and held out the note.

"Look at this!" Althea exclaimed. "He left a damn note. Now you better lead me to this place or else I'll end you!"

"Sweetheart, you can't end me," Peter said. "I was going to bring you to them. Come on, there's only one other place they could have taken Ezra. Unless you have somewhere else to be?"

"I will not find Ezra without my friend by my side," Althea said. "I must tell her. If I can tell her, then she'll meet us at the farmhouse."

*~*~*

Annoyance crossed over Peter; he didn't want anyone else involved. It was already bad enough that Ezra had been taken. Now Althea wanted to bring another friend into the situation.

"Althea, I don't recommend going through with this," Peter warned. "If something goes wrong, then Alex and the rest will get what they want."

"Since when do you care?" Althea asked as she walked away from him.

His brows furrowed; he rubbed the bridge of his nose.

"For all I know, you set this whole thing up," she said.

"I did no such thing! We only needed blood from a Nephilim, that's all, but I don't know how this escalated so fast."

"I saw Melissa outside the coffee shop with you and your friends. Why bring her in?"

"Because she was the last piece of the puzzle, aside from a flower and Nephilim's blood."

Althea rolled her eyes and pulled out her phone. She sent a message to Abigail and put her phone away.

"Look, I know that this sounds crazy, but they tasked us to bring something back."

"Yeah, to destroy the rest of the world, and I find out I have to deal with this shit?"

"No, to make this world better. The world now, it's dying, and if we can bring him back, he claims he can fix it."

Peter watched while Althea climbed over a fallen log and headed back to the campus. Peter chased after her. Sure, he knew Althea was mad, but that didn't justify bringing someone else into the picture or to judge him, for that matter. "It wasn't my idea to capture Ezra. I never wanted him taken."

"Sure, you didn't," Althea spoke. "How was he your Guardian Angel first?"

"It's kind of complicated. When I was younger, I had trouble," he explained. "I'm talking about major trouble. My father had been arrested, and my mother had taken ill, my classmates hated m. They hated me for what I did, I didn't even do anything. One day I was sitting alone on the campus ground enjoying the sun when a shadow blocked out my view. I opened my eyes and saw Ezra standing over me."

"Something must have happened then."

"We spent time together, always hung out, still I was called a freak. Then one day Alex, Jennifer, and Adam spoke to me said that they could help me with my bullying problem."

"Let me guess," Althea said walking toward the old soccer field. "Ezra didn't agree with your decision to join a cult?"

"They blinded me, okay? And I took it out on him. Once I went dark, he tried everything to speak to me, but I ignored him and his warnings."

"You acted like a jackass and expect him to forgive you?"

"Althea, if I can fix things between us then maybe just maybe I can find a way out of this situation."

Althea and Peter talked a bit longer as they arrived at the dormitory. Althea entered the building and made her way to the room. Peter followed. At first, he didn't want to go in, but realized he needed to do something, and he couldn't sit around and do nothing. Not while they were in the situation. Sure, he and Ezra had a few fights, but that's all they were—fights. Now Ezra was taken, and he had to rely on a girl who barely knew how to use her powers. "So, will you help me?"
