Chapter Eleven
"Peter, what are you looking at?" Alex said, as he followed Peter's gaze to the bushes. Suddenly, on the other side, Ezra and Althea stood up, aware they were found. They took off running.
"Somebody! Stop them! But leave that damn angel to me!" Alex yelled. "Melissa, stay here. We need to start the ritual, but we can't do that without catching those two. If you're right, the only way we can get through to Althea would be through her Guardian Angel."
Peter overheard the entire thing, and watched as Jennifer, Adam, and Alex took off after Ezra and Althea. Despite Peter's anger and hatred toward the young angel, Ezra was still his friend. He never remembered why he left Ezra or even told him off, but maybe there was a way to make things up. However, he had to make sure he still played by the rules.
Peter took off after his group of friends, hoping to head them off at the pass. He cut through the vegetation without even thinking about plants pricking him or trapping him in a vast number of vines. All he cared about was trying to get Ezra and Althea as far away as he could. But as he neared the exit, Peter stopped and saw that Althea and Ezra had separated. With the two separated, that left both vulnerable. Peter stopped and debated who to follow before deciding to follow Ezra. He paused and hid behind the tree as Ezra came face to face with Alex.
*~*~*
Ezra and Althea separated, which was probably the worst thing they could have done. Ezra's job was to protect Althea, and this time, he was determined not to lose another charge. The first charge was Peter, and that had failed. No matter what he tried to do, whether it was warning Peter not to go down the dark road, or just trying to act like a brother to him, nothing seemed to work. Ezra wasn't about to go down without a fight. Now here he was, standing in front of Alex, waiting for him to make the first move.
"You know you're becoming a pain in the ass, Ezra," Alex said. "No matter what we do, you're always there. Why don't you get it? Peter is no longer your charge. He's a member of our coven."
"Peter was a great kid before you fill his head with darkness," Ezra said, narrowing his eyes at his enemy.
"Fill his head with darkness?" Alex laughed. "No, Ezra, he was already filled with it. You couldn't handle the fact that there is something more to him than you thought."
Angered, Ezra summoned his blade. It was the last time that the Servants of Evil were going to get in his hair. He would let nothing happen to Althea, not while he had the chance to protect her.
"Really?" Alex said. "This is your big move. A fight? Sorry Ezra, but I think we've got the upper hand."
At first, Ezra didn't quite understand what Alex was talking about, that is until he looked over and noticed Jennifer. With a snap of her fingers all Ezra could feel was someone grabbing him from behind. On his left side, Adam had him by the arm. He tried to vanish but to his dismay he couldn't. Adam must have performed a spell because now Ezra couldn't even disappear or fight back. Adam quickly disarmed him and wrapped his arm around Ezra's neck. Ezra struggled to breathe and break free. This had never happened in all his life of being a Guardian Angel. Now he felt so much more human than before. Ezra's vision blurred as he saw the outline of Alex and Jennifer.
"Nice talking to you, Ezra, but right now we need you to help lure your little charge to us."
With that, Ezra's vision went dark.
*~*~*
Althea stopped at a nearby rock, out of breath and worried, thinking that Ezra would catch up with her. But to no avail. She didn't know where he went or what had happened after they separated. Panicked, she stood and called out to him, despite knowing that it was a terrible idea to let her pursuers know where she was. Rather than Ezra coming from the main campus, Peter exited instead, looking flabbergasted.
"What the hell?" Althea said as she hid from view behind a large tree and grabbed a heavy branch. She waited until Peter got close and swung it, attempting to hit him in the head. However, Peter caught it before Althea could land a blow.
"Whoa!" Peter exclaimed. "Althea! Chill! I'm not going to do anything to you!"
"The hell you won't!" Althea exclaimed and pulled the branch from his grasp. She tried to attack him again. "Where is he?!" Peter grabbed the branch from Althea's hands and snapped it in two. "Calm yourself down first."
Althea glared daggers at Peter, until eventually the anger in her eyes faded. "Look what you're thinking, but if you come with me right now, we can save Ezra."
"And how would you propose we do that? Are you telling me you idiots captured Ezra?"
"This wasn't part of the plan," Peter responded. "We would not do any harm to him. We simply needed you to help us."
"Because you need the blood of a Nephilim to summon whatever it is," Althea said.
"You can cuss all you want, but if you don't come with me, then there's no way we could save Ezra."
"You want me to trust you, after all that you've put us through?"
"Hey! You're the one who was hiding behind that bush. I know you were at the campsite yesterday."
"Campsite? It's a cabin!"
"Tomato tamato." Peter rolled his eyes. "My guess is they probably brought Ezra back to the cabin, where they'll use him as bait to track you."
"If they wanted me, why didn't they just capture me?"
"Because Ezra would prevent that from happening," he explained. "And for your information, Althea, I know who he is. I know you're confused, and I know he hasn't told you the full story yet, but before he was your angel, he was mine."
"That's impossible."
"Nothing is impossible. Now unless you want to stand out here and talk, we should get back to that cabin. Don't give me that look," Peter continued. "I'm not luring you into a trap. I saw everything that happened and from the way it sounds, this Melissa girl is the one who gave my friends the idea to capture Ezra. What are we waiting for? Let's go!" The two raced into the forest and to the cabin.
