Chapter 4

I heard beeping. I opened my eyes. I was in a hospital. A doctor was standing beside my bed. "You're finally awake. Those men almost killed you. Your body fought through it though. That beam was just a beam of power," he said. I looked around me. There was a boy next to me. He was the only one. I slowly sat up. The doctor raised an eyebrow at me and walked away.

I was alone. Except for the boy. He woke up. "Who are you?" he asked sleepily.

"Bella," I responded.

"Hi Bella, I'm Aiden," said the boy. His brown eyes were sleepy and his messy brown hair made him look like he had been asleep for a long, long time. I looked at myself. I was in the hospital dress. I looked normal. I then saw a strand of turquoise hair. It was mine! That beam must of changed it. I sighed. It was over. I survived without becoming a slave. "Bella, why is your hair turquoise?" Aiden asked.

"Aiden, I-I-I...can't tell you right now," I stammered. I didn't want to tell anybody.

"So, why are you here? Did you have surgery like me?" he asked.

"I just was...hit with a power beam," I told him. He looked at me funny.

"Like the ones that rarely come out of the power lines?" he asked.

"I guess," I responded. He shrugged. I was relieved I wouldn't have to tell anybody anything yet.

"Bella, do you see that bowl of crackers? Can you get me one?" he asked.

"Well, you have to tell me what kind, and why can't you get the kind you want?" I asked, trying not to be rude.

"I had foot surgery," he told me quietly.

"Sorry, I didn't mean to make you uncomfortable," I said, getting up and trying to get to the bowl of crackers. Why was there one in here anyways? I picked up one of every kind and brought them to Aiden.

"Thanks, I'm not uncomfortable. I just didn't think anybody would be curios on what happened to me," Aiden said.

"I care," I said. He smiled.

"Thanks," he said. I sat back on the bed. I saw Aiden pull the covers off his legs. He had a caste on one of his legs. He started eating the chocolate crackers. I sighed and laid back, enjoying not being in a cage alone. "Bella, where are you going to go for school?" Aiden asked.

"I don't know," I admitted.

"You should go to Beach Middle School," Aiden said. I thought about that. It sounded cool. The doctor came in. Two adults came in behind him.

"These are your new parents, since your old ones don't want you anymore," said the doctor. They came up and hugged me. I glanced at Aiden, who was talking to the doctor.

"Come honey, we're going to go home and get you settled," my new mom said happily. I got up. The handed me new clothes and pushed me into a restroom. I looked at the white shirt and jean shorts my parents gave me. I put it on and went back to my parents. We all climbed in the car and we were off.
