02 || Escape
Ah... My head is killing me.... What happened again..?
Momo opened her eyes, slowly blinking and seeing the dim lights of the plane flickering sporadically. She tried to move her body, but was tightly stuck in place by her safety belt. "What...? Wait..." she mumbled as her eyes widened, suddenly remembering everything that had happened.
She focused her attention towards the cockpit which was at a downward angle from her. She saw water pooling into the cabin from beneath the door which was now below her. "No..." she gasped, turning her head and looking out the window.
The dark water of the ocean was all she could see. It was unclear how deep the plane had sunk, but she could still see the light of the moon and the flashes from the lightning. "We can't be too far down.. We just have to- Todoroki!"
Momo whipped her head to where her half and half companion had been. She was relived to see that he was breathing but he was still unconscious and his head was dripping with blood. "We have to get out of here!" she told herself, calming her nerves and focusing on what needed to be done.
In her hand she used her Quirk and created a knife. She gripped it firmly and used the sharp blade to cut herself free. She dropped to the seat beneath her, catching her balance and making sure she kept ahold of her knife. I have to get to Todoroki and get us both out of here... she thought as she looked up to the boy who was now about a meter and a half above her, trapped in place by his chair.
Momo jumped across the aisle, landing on the recliner just below Todoroki. His blood dripped from his brow, dropping down and landing on Yaoyorozu's cheek as she focused intensely on the steps she needed to take in order to save him. Alright Momo. Time to live up to everything and be a Hero... We're both going to get out of this alive and together, Todoroki..
She pressed her foot against the edge of the window, using the extra height to jump up and grab on to the sturdy strap around Shouto's chest. She used her upper body strength to pull herself up, setting her feet on the chair and hanging just in front of him. Being so close to him now, she could see the small cut across his head, right at his hairline above his left eye.
"Okay.." Momo muttered, locking her eyes on his unconscious face.
She quickly inspected his head, making sure that his injury wasn't too severe which it didn't seem to be. Looking down at his body he didn't appear to have any other injuries — maybe some mild bruising from the impact and restraint of the seatbelts, but other than that he was just trapped in place. Momo brought her hand to his face, taking his jaw into it and gently moving his head, trying to wake him up.
"Todoroki! Todoroki, you have to wake up!" she said, seeing his eyes beginning to crack open and a stifled groan escape from his lips.
"Y-yaoyorozu..?" he groaned. He weakly opened his eyes, his vision blurred and slowly focused. He blinked several times until he could clearly see his friend's relieved yet worried face inches before his own. "What's.. What's going on..?"
"The plane crashed and is sinking. We have to get out of here before it's too late," she bluntly informed him, glancing over her shoulder and seeing that the water was slowly rising more and more.
The situation suddenly sank in as the horrific event that occurred just moments prior played through his mind. "Wha- Yaoyorozu are you okay? You've got blood on your face."
"I'm fine... This.. This is your blood," she said, gripping the belt around his chest. "You've got a cut on your head but it doesn't look too bad. Once we get out of here I can help you more."
The warmth of his fresh blood trickling down his face was now very evident to him. He reached up and wiped the blood away before it got in his eye. He then focused on the water rising behind Momo, seeing that it was coming in through the cracks of the cockpit door. The two teens felt a shift in the plane and the sinking sensation increase as the water flooded even more.
"Hold on to something," Momo sternly told him as she brought her knife to his belt.
He nodded and reached up, grabbing the edge of the window and the side of the chair, preparing himself for the gravity. She cut him free and Shouto held himself in place.
He moved with ease from his spot, maneuvering around his friend and dropping down to the broken table beside her. "Got any plans on how we get out of here without drowning?" he questioned, looking around the cabin at any possible way for them to escape.
"If we can get the door open, I can create some breathing devices for us," she said, turning her attention to him. "It might be tough and it'll definitely be cold, but we'll need to wait until it's completely submerged in water otherwise the pressure will be too much when it's opened."
Shouto nodded his head as his eyes focused on the door that was only partially submerged in water. "We have some time still. We should gather as much as we can from here before we leave. Create the breathing devices and find our bags. I'll climb up and see if there's any food that's in jars or cans that will make it to the surface," he said as he turned his attention up towards the back of the plane, nearly three meters from their current location.
"Be careful. With your extra weight in the back it might shift the plane into a worse position and we'll have to wait longer to escape.."
He nodded, turning his focus back to the cockpit door where the pilot and flight attendant had been when they crashed. The water was seeping through quickly, filling the cabin enough that opening it would cause it to flood immediately and blast them to the back of the plane. "Don't open that door..." he stated as his eyes down turned at the reality that those inside couldn't be saved. "It's been long enough that if they didn't die on impact then they would have drowned or gotten hypothermia..."
Momo sighed and closed her eyes as she began her creation. "I know..." she muttered, not wanting to think about it.
Shouto focused on his self appointed task at hand rather than dwelling on something he couldn't change. The others were already lost, but Momo was still with him. She was his priority, and he was hers. They were Heroes and they were determined to get the other out alive and safe.
He climbed using the chairs to the kitchen area of the plane, distributing his weight evenly and carefully as he reached it. The first thing he saw was jars of food that had rolled onto the floor. He extended his arm out, leaning closer and grabbing one, reading the label and making sure it was worth taking. "Yaoyorozu," he said, looking down and seeing that she had found their bags and was now waiting for him to come back. "Open my bag. I'll drop these in."
Momo did as he said, opening his duffle and preparing to catch what he dropped. Shouto aimed the jar and released it. It fell and Momo caught it in his bag, seeing that there was room for at least five more of the same size. "Hurry up, Todoroki. The door is almost submerged and I'm starting to get cold.."
Shouto nodded as he took notice of her legs in the cold ocean water. "I'll be down in a moment. Just hang in there. When we get out I can warm us up," he said as he dropped another container. "Did you happen to find the first aide or emergency kit?" he asked, dropping the third jar he could reach without climbing further.
"I did. I fastened it to my bag and I have the emergency one here," she replied, watching as he dropped a final jar, this time missing the bag and landing it in the water. Momo retrieved it before it could sink and then she placed it in his bag, zipping it up as Shouto descended back down to her. "The door is completely under now.. We need to prepare to get to the surface," she said, handing him his bag.
Shouto strapped his duffle around his body, looking to Momo as she handed him his breathing device. "Thanks. Once we get close to the surface we'll activate the life raft and it can carry us to the top," he said while taking the emergency bag from her. "The faster we can get out, the better," he said, focusing on her and trying to be as sympathetic as he could to someone who couldn't regulate her own temperature like he could.
She nodded, shivering slightly as the water made its way to their shoulders now. "O-okay... Let's get going," she said before putting her breathing apparatus in her mouth.
Shouto did the same and focused on the door. He and Momo both went down under the water, focusing on the door that was their way out. They breathed through their mouths, the devices pulling the oxygen from the water and allowing them to breath with ease.
The leaver to the door was large and heavy as Shouto attempted to pull it open on his own. He motioned for Momo to assist him with it, and using their teamwork, the door opened and the chilling water washed across them as they swam out. The ocean was dark. They had sunken down farther than either of them thought. Lightning could be seen above as it flashed across the sky, lighting the ocean just enough that they could see one another as they swam up together.
Shouto reached out for Momo, taking her hand as she reached back for him. He pulled her close to his body, his Quirk providing her heat as he handed her the life raft, showing her that he wanted her to grip it tight. She nodded at him and he nodded back, pulling the cord and inflating it. They both held on tight to the raft and one another as they rapidly surfaced, breaking through to the storm.
The storm seemed to have worsened — rain poured down, lightning spread across the sky, thunder roared, and the waves of the ocean began to push them away from the crash site. They each gripped like their lives depended on it to the life raft, Shouto assisting Momo in before climbing in himself. A massive wave splashed down beside them, nearly capsizing their raft. Even though they were safe from the plane and from sinking into the depths, they were not out of danger..
Momo gripped Shouto's arm, latching onto him tightly, afraid that if she let go she would lose him. The waves were terrifying and she couldn't keep her eyes off them. They were like walls of ocean water coming right for them, targeting them but just barely missing their raft, pushing them further and further in a single direction.
"Yaoyorozu! Just hang on!" Shouto shouted over the booming thunder and crashing waves. Her body was trembling against his — freezing due to the horrendous elements they found themselves in.
Dammit! Is this a freaking hurricane or something!? This storm is ridiculous! Shouto thought while he kept his eyes on the waves, preparing himself to help Momo if they went back into the sea. He pulled Momo closer to his left side, warming her the best he could so she wouldn't freeze to death. Just hold on a little while longer, Yaoyorozu! I promise I'll help you once the storm settles!
A massive wave crashed down beside them, making them airborne for a split second and sending them skidding across the surface. Shouto held Momo tightly, bracing them both and keeping them inside the raft. He was frightened that the worst was yet to come, however, the ocean had calmed.
The male loosened his grasp on the female, looking across the sea and seeing the unruly waves and stormy winds in the distance. "What the hell?" he muttered as he released Momo completely. He looked up and saw the starry night sky. "Are we in the eye of the storm or something..?"
Momo shivered and instinctively reached back out for the warmth that had left her. "I-if w-we're in the eye.. T-t-t-then w-we're safe," she stuttered through her shivering.
His companion's state concerned him. He felt bad she was like this while he wasn't, but he knew he was the only thing that could help her. Opting to focus on her was an easy choice. "Yaoyorozu... Take your shirt off," he said, averting his eyes from her and looking at the storm they were slowly drifting away from.
Before she could respond to him, he spoke up again. "If you remain in your wet clothes you'll freeze even more and you will definitely get hypothermia.. I won't look, but, you need to get out of your clothes and if you can create a blanket or some new clothes.. After that I'll use my fire to warm you up more," he informed her of his thought process.
Her trust in Shouto was something he had earned a long time ago. She knew his intentions were pure on wanting to help and nothing beyond that. She didn't argue or hesitate to begin to strip down out of her drenched clothes. While she did, Shouto turned his back to her, removing his own shirt and igniting his fire across the left side of his chest and back, warming them both and beginning to dry his pants and shirt.
It's so cold... My body is so numb I can barely feel his fire.. Momo thought as she removed the last of her clothes.
She couldn't stop shivering as she brought her knees to her chest and wrapping her arms around them while she created a large thermal blanket from her back. It draped across her and she covered herself completely, hiding her naked body from her friend. "T-todoroki.."
Shouto glanced back at her before turning to face her fully. He saw her clothes on the floor of the raft and that she had opted for a blanket. He noticed how pale and red her skin had become from the cold and that she hadn't stopped shivering since they surfaced the water.
He scooted beside her, extinguishing his flames from his total and igniting small embers across the top of his arm as he placed it around her overtop of the blanket. "Do you have any clothes on..?" he quietly questioned. Immediately a searing blush spread across his face and he felt like a pervert for asking..
Like Shouto, Momo's face tinted in slight color at his question. She was a little grateful because her face now felt warm, but she wondered why he asked as she answered him. "N-no.. N-n-nothing.."
"Oh.. Well that's good... Your body will heat up faster without them.. I can dry them for you if you'd like," he offered, pulling his arm that was around her away.
Before he could move more than a few centimeters Momo scooted closer to him. "Maybe later. If you don't mind, you're helping me more by staying there... I hadn't ever realized before how warm your left side is when you don't have your fire activated," she said, stopping him from leaving with her words and simple action of cuddling close.
He shifted slightly as he placed his arm around her again, his temperature raising due to his nerves. "Y-yeah.."
Already Momo could feel her body warm up. Her shivering stopped and she became less and less numb. Ignoring the fact that she was naked and cuddled close to her male friend for warmth was easy to ignore given that they were stranded alone on a small life raft. She made sure that her blanket was large and thick enough to completely cover her — in fact it was large enough to cover them both if needed, but for the time being it was all for her.
"We should use the radio that's in the emergency bag.. We need to get in contact with someone so we can get rescued," Momo stated, focusing on the next step that they need to take now that they were out of immediate danger.
Shouto nodded and reached into the wet bag, fishing out the radio and removing his arm from her to find the frequency. Static was all that came through. Every channel was the same. "The storm might be messing with it," he stated, looking around at the circle of wind that surrounded them on all sides. However, his gaze locked on something he hadn't spotted before. "Is that.. An island?" he muttered, facing what he saw and gaining Momo's full attention.
Momo turned and focused to where Shouto was looking, spotting an island nearly two kilometers from their position. The winds of the storm surrounded both them and the island — they were completely in the eye of the massive storm that had taken them down. The chaotic waves and rushing winds were visible through the twisting invisible barrier that protected them, but they were unsure as to how long they would be safe. Getting out of open water was their best bet and they both knew it.
"We need to get there quickly," Momo said, dropping the blanket from her shoulders and chest as she began to create something.
Shouto glanced at her then averted his eyes when he saw what she was doing. "What are you making?" he asked, keeping his sights locked on the island.
"A small motor. You'll have to hold it in the water but it'll get us there fast than an oar," she informed him, catching her creation as it completed. "Here."
The young male turned his head and saw that she was mostly covered up as she held out the motor to him. He took it and maneuvered to the back of the raft, placing it in the water and turning it on. "Once we get there we'll need to find shelter. Are you able to create some clothes for yourself?" he asked, aiming them so they were headed directly towards the land.
She nodded while pulling the thermal blanket around her body more. The wind rushed past them as they swiftly moved through the water. "Don't worry about me. I've got more than enough strength and lipids to create anything right now," she replied.
"Glad to hear it. We'll be needing your power," he stated as they neared the unknown island.
