01 || Departure
I-Island. The large island that was home to the world's top scientists. A place where the large convention known as I-Expo was held every few years. The expo was enormous like always. Several scientists and Heroes attended, both old and new to their fields, along with many, many, many families who were visiting or got personally invited by someone of power.
Two of these guests happened to be two third years at UA: Shouto Todoroki, and Momo Yaoyorozu.
Shouto had been invited as one of the most popular up and coming young Heroes from UA. Being a third year at the prestigious school and already one of the more powerful and versatile Heroes in the public's eye, his invitation was obvious. Momo, like last time, also returned to the island via her father working closely alongside several of the scientists and advertising agencies — but with her popularity as the top academic student in all of UA High and her amazing and useful Quirk, she was also invited for similar reasons as Shouto.
The two students had been informed that they would be attending, and unlike last time they visited, none of the other students in their classes joined them. Since they were friends and were going to the same place for the same amount of time, the two agreed to share a private jet to and from the island, along with hanging out together once there.
The expo went on per usual. Quirks were demonstrated out in the open, creating marvelous attractions to those who were visiting. Shouto and Momo spent their days chatting and walking around, checking out the sights, exploring the museums, going on the Quirk courses that were available, and speaking with several scientists and engineers about their upcoming technologies for Hero support. Overall, their time spent together at the expo was an enjoyable experience for them both.
"This expo was certainly better than the last one we went to," Shouto stated as he and Momo walked across the airport terminal. He situated his bag over his shoulder as he walked, his Hero costume packed away and his casual clothing on. "Did you have fun this time around?" he asked his friend, turning to look at her.
The duo stepped onto the moving path across the floor, taking them straight to their private jet. Momo smiled brightly, nodding her head and focusing her attention on the boy beside her. "This expo was definitely enjoyable. It was unfortunate that none of the others could come this time, but they're all busy with their training and jobs at their agencies which is understandable," she replied just as their jet came into their sights.
Shouto tucked his hand into his pocket, turning his head to look at the Yaoyorozu family's luxurious looking plane. "I know it probably would have been more fun for you to hang out with some of your girl friends instead of just me, but I am glad that I wasn't alone here," he stated nonchalantly.
Momo let out a small sigh and a shake of her head. "Spending time with you is always enjoyable to me, Todoroki," she replied, gaining his attention again. "We've been friends since our first year and we rarely get to hang out just the two of us. We should do it more often when we get home."
The corner of his mouth quirked up at her words and her friendly smile. Shouto simply nodded his head, acknowledging in his own way that he appreciated her words. Momo knew by now that he was a man of few words most of the time, and seeing his tiny smile was more than enough to make her heart feel full, glad that he enjoyed her company and friendship.
"How long is the flight back to Japan again?" Shouto asked as they finally reached the plane.
"Um.. I think it's going to be at least a nine hour flight from this location," Momo replied as the two of them ascended the staircase that lead into the plane.
Shouto entered first, stepping into the clean cream colored interior of their extravagant ride. There were eight leather recliners, four on each side of the plane and had a small table between them in pairs of two, a restroom up front right before the cockpit, and behind them was a special kitchen where their inflight meals would be prepared.
Shouto walked across the layout and took a seat in one of the recliners in the middle section. He set his bag on the floor beside him and the wall of the plane, tucking it under his chair in a cubby made for carry-on luggage. He watched as Momo set her own bag down behind the seat across from his own and then sat down in it.
"Nine hours you said?" he asked, making sure he heard her right.
"I believe so. The island is constantly in motion but for the exposé they try to keep it in the general vicinity," Momo replied as she pulled out her phone to check the time. "It's about four o' clock now, so as long as we depart on time we'll arrive in Tokyo in the early morning hours. Unless our location has moved more than I'm anticipating."
"You're probably right then," he replied as he set his elbow on the armrest and rested his chin in the palm of his hand, looking out the window at other passengers boarding their planes for departure. "This is gonna be a long flight.."
The door to their jet shut and locked and the fasten seatbelt sign came on. The two UA students buckled up as the jet began to move. They both looked out the window, watching as they took off before the other planes that were still being boarded.
Flying through the air was calming. Looking out the window and seeing the open blue ocean as far as the eye could see was a unique experience for them. Seeing the ocean wasn't new, but seeing nothing but the ocean for miles on end was different and pleasant.
Momo and Shouto spent the first few hours of their flight talking with friendly conversation. After awhile though they decided to take the time to do other things since they'd spent the entirety of the past few days together. The female of the duo listened to music on her phone as it charged while she read one of Todoroki's manga that he had brought along. Meanwhile, the male shut his eyes and got some rest in the more than comfortable chair.
Eventually the sky darkened and Shouto woke up from his long nap. The first thing he noticed was the dim lights of the plane which lead him to the realization that night had fallen. He let out a yawn, hiding it behind his hand as his eyes focused across the table to his friend. She was looking out the window with worry in her eyes, which Shouto didn't like seeing.
"Something wrong, Yaoyorozu?" he questioned, expecting her to look at him, but to his surprise and discomfort, she didn't.
"It's storming out there right now," she answered just as lightning flashed. "It's been like this for nearly thirty minutes now..."
"If you're so worried you could have woken me up," he replied, his eyes watching the heavy rainfall patter against the window and more flashes of lightning light up the dark sky. "Everything is gonna be okay. Planes, especially private jets like these, are made and inspected thoroughly to handle the weather like this," he tried to assure her.
The lighting flashed again followed by a loud boom of thunder. The raven haired girl flinched at the sudden noise, clenching her eyes shut and gripping her blouse over her chest. Shouto raised both brows as he observed her. He let out a sigh and stood up from his seat, walking around the table and sitting on the armrest of her chair. He placed his hand on her shoulder, trying his best to comfort her through physical contact over words.
Momo opened her eyes at his touch and she looked up at him sitting beside her. He didn't say anything but instead gave a small smile of reassurance as he moved his arm around her and held her closer to him. She leaned against his side, feeling his warmth and the comfort of the simple contact, making her feel like she wasn't alone and that everything would be okay.
They watched the rainfall for awhile. The night got darker and the rain kept on coming. The lightning let up but the thunder grew more intense. The two UA students sat in a comfortable silence, up until the jet hit turbulence.
Shouto nearly fell over onto of Momo, catching himself on the wall before he could land on her. The lights flickered on and off several times and the plane jerked to the side. Shouto fell off the chair, landing on his back and sliding across the floor of the cabin. He grabbed on to the base of one of the chairs as the plane began to stabilize.
"Todoroki! Are you okay!?" Momo exclaimed, her voice laced with worry for him.
He sat up, rubbing his head and noticed the fasten seatbelts sign came back on. "I'm fine," he grumbled as he pulled himself up into the chair he was holding on to. "Wish that had come on sooner though," he mumbled as he buckled himself in.
"Attention passengers," the pilot began to say over the intercom, "there will be a long patch of turbulence for the next few minutes. Remain in your seats and don't worry the-"
Suddenly a loud explosion-like sound boomed and echoed through the cabin of the plane. The sudden intense sound caused the two teens to jump in their seats. The plane began to descend rapidly, almost spiraling as they fell closer and closer down to the water below.
"What's happening!?" Momo cried out.
Masks dropped down from the hidden compartments in front of all the seats. The two UA recommended students quickly and hastily grabbed their masks and put them on, breathing in the oxygen and trying to comprehend and accept that their plane was going down.
Shouto was wide eyed and staring over to Momo. Her eyes were wide open and staring at something in front of her. "Yaoyorozu!" he shouted though his mask. The girl turned her eyes and met his, both of them seeing the terror in each others faces. "Everything will be fine! Don't worry! We can-"
A powerful impact stopped the plane. The sound of metal slapping against water rang in their ears. Momo and Shouto were jerked in their seats, being whiplashed but held in place thanks to the safety belts, but, both of their bodies were limp as they remained trapped in place, sinking into the ocean as the plane took on water…
