03 || Sanctuary?

It was still dark when they reached the sandy beaches of the island. The storm hadn't moved or increased in power, but stayed in place and showed no signs of dispersing.

Shouto pulled the raft onto land while Momo had created clothing and had dressed herself while he pulled them free of the water. Once she was dressed in dry clothing she created a lantern, making things easier for them on their newfound sanctuary. She stepped out of the raft, the cold sand of the beach not helping with her temperature. She was still freezing and the night and storm wasn't helping..

"We need to find a place that will be safe to wait out this storm," Shouto stated as he dragged the raft all the way to the treeline. Right now it was the only possessions they had and losing it wouldn't be good. "There's bound to be some place sturdy we can spend the night in," he said, focusing on Momo.

Momo nodded in agreement, knowing that if the storm moved over the island they wouldn't be safe if they stayed on the beach. "It looks like there's large rocks and a cliff side over that way," she said, moving the lantern in the direction she was talking about. "We might be able to find a cave or at least have more cover due to the rocks."

"Okay. Let's go there then," he replied as he picked up their bags, slinging them over his shoulders before handing Momo the emergency bag that had the radio and food rations. "Lead the way."

The duo began their trek through the wooded terrain, headed for the large cliff that could be seen from the beach. Momo lead the way through the brush lighting the area with her lantern, allowing Shouto to not waste more energy than needed right now since he was carrying their items that had made it out with them. The food, extra supplies, the thermal blanket, extra clothes, his manga, their broken phones, their first aide kit..

The forest was dense, thick with overgrown plants. Small game trails were almost invisible to them as they walked. Shouto stuck close to Momo, keeping his eyes scanning the darkness, feeling as if they weren't alone. Being on an unknown island in the middle of a terrible storm, both the UA survivors knew that anything involving rescue or finding someone on the island would have to wait. Finding shelter and making it through the night together was top priority.

"There's the cliff," Momo stated as she and Shouto stepped out into a slight clearing. A small stream flowed from within the island towards the ocean, following along the side of the massive cliff. In the dark of night even with their lantern neither of them could see the top. It seemed to go up and disappear into the night sky. "We need to see if there are any caverns. Just anything that could provide us cover," Momo said as she felt rain beginning to come down.

"Right," Shouto nodded as he flared fire on his hand, aiming it along the side of the cliff. He positioned himself so he was looking down it, seeing that there were no trees too close. He blasted his fire down the rocky wall, lighting it all up so they could spot any sort of sanctuary. "There. About six meters down. It looks like there's some sort of divit," he said, turning and looking to Momo.

She had seen it too and nodded. "Let's check it out."

They walked along the stream, both of them keeping their light sources aimed forward at the wall. As they neared the spot they saw, it opened up more in a peculiar opening — one that didn't seem to be naturally made. The cave went into the cliff side and opened up after what seemed like a short hallway the perfect size for them to walk though. Inside was about the size of their dorm rooms back at UA and there were several medium sized holes in the wall above their heads that poked through to the outside.

"This place is weird," Shouto stated the obvious. He placed the bags down and ignited more of his body in fire, brightening up the entire area so they could see every nook and cranny. "This'll do for tonight. We'll need to block the entrance off in case this is some animal's den or something," he said while watching Momo observe the walls.

Momo trailed her fingers along the cold stone, her eyes dropping to the sandy ground, not seeing any trace of tracks or disturbance anywhere. "I think we'll be fine. But we'd better seal the entrance off just in case," she said as she turned her attention to her companion.

Shouto gave a single nod of his head. "I'll take care of that when I get back. I need to go and gather some firewood so we can keep a fire going through the night," he replied while picking up the bags and taking them to the back of the cave. "Will you go through these and pull everything out? I need to dry it all. And if you could, create what we don't have and need. Rope, blankets, tools, anything like that."

"Of course. Be careful out there," she said, taking notice of the rain coming down harder.

The thunder and lightning from before came back, echoing through the cave and sending blinding flashes of light streaking across the forest just outside. Shouto walked to the exit and flared his fire across the left side of his face, lighting the area more. "I'll be back soon. Don't worry," he said as he stepped out, leaving Momo alone.

She looked down to the drenched sand coated bags, letting out a sigh as she knelt down next to them. "Okay... What do we need..? What should I make..?"

While Momo did inventory of what they needed, Shouto walked through the thick brush of the woods. He stayed under the canopy as he searched for wood that was still dry, hoping he could find enough quickly so he wouldn't be keeping Momo waiting. Yaoyorozu still isn't out of harms way yet. She might not be on the brink of freezing anymore, but all she has is that blanket and her clothes. I need to make a fire and seal the cave, keep us warm through the night.. Tomorrow we'll have to search for anyone on this island, he thought while gathering sticks from the base of a large tree. I wonder if the radio will work yet.. There might be a radio tower nearby that we can bounce a signal off of..

Shouto gathered an armful of wood, stopping and staring up at the large tree he was beside. "We're pretty lucky to have gotten here. Being stuck out in the sea would have been a huge problem..." he muttered, feeling a few drops of rain leak through the dense branches and drip on his face. "The odds of no one being here are slim to none.. Someone will-"

Interrupting his thoughts were low growls that came from the darkness slowly surrounding him. The hair on his arms and the back of his neck stood on end, fear suddenly enveloping him. "What the hell?" he growled as he upped his flames, brightening the area. Backing away from the light he saw a large pack of wolves. His eyes widened briefly before narrowing in anger as he looked the beasts over.

There were nearly a dozen large feral, ravenous looking wolves that receded back into the shadows, hiding from the light. Their fur was unkept, their eyes seeming to resonate the viciousness that their snarles and growls gave off. Long strings of drool dripped from their jowls and they revealed their long sharp teeth. Overall they were like something conjured from someone's dark nightmare. They weren't like any wolf Shouto had ever seen.

Shouto took a step back, inching closer towards the cave and where Momo was. These wolves are definitely wild.. I can't afford to let them get to the cave, he thought, eyeing them as they eyed him. Ice coated the ground around his foot as he targeted the ones closest to him. Sorry, but-

The ground froze solid and spread quickly across, sending spikes of ice aimed precisely at six of the wolves closest to him. The beasts shrieked in pain as they were pierced, dying almost immediately. His attack scared the others off into the shadows of the night, giving the Hero a chance to run for it. With how close the trees were to one another and the unknown area he was in, Shouto couldn't use his ice to blast his way through. He needed to maneuver quickly and ward them off with his Quirk when he could.

He looked over his shoulder and saw the glowing eyes of three on his tail. "Bastards!" he shouted, releasing ice from his foot and creating a large spiked barrier behind himself. He heard a slicing crash and a whimper as he kept running, hoping he managed to get more than one.

This forest is too thick! I can barely see in front of myself! he thought as he evaded a tree, dropping a few pieces of his firewood. Doesn't help when I'm being hunted either!

Two wolves lunged at him from the side, basically flanking him. Shouto managed to dodge one with his quick reflexes but the other managed to knick his arm with its claws, grazing him and slicing his flesh. He growled in pain and stumbled, smacking his back into a tree as one of them lunged for his legs.

Shouto however saw it coming. He transferred the wood to his other arm as he froze the ground, catching the wolf in place before releasing a powerfully hot blast of heat directly at it. The bright orange flames blasted across it, burning its fur and bubbling it's flesh. "Die you bastard!" he shouted out of pure rage. His burning gaze turned to the last one in his sights and he aimed his hand at it, incinerating it as well. Once they were dead he quickly continued on his way, keeping his senses sharp since he knew there were more still stalking him. "Damn wolves have me sounding like Bakugou..." he huffed as he broke free from the forest.

The rain poured down like a waterfall, pelting him as he quickly searched for the light of Momo's lantern. "Where's the cave!?" he loudly grumbled over the sound of the pouring rain.

A loud bark caught him off guard, momentarily sounding like thunder and allowing the wolf to bite down on his arm. Shouto grit his teeth and flash fired the wolf leaving nothing behind but the bones and wet ash of its body. The young Hero watched the blood mix with the rain as it ran down his arm and dripped from his hand. Already he felt himself feeling feint from being attacked. He knew he needed to get to safety, but he also knew there was at least one left out there — a large black one who he assumed was the alpha pack leader.

He looked along the cliff and caught sight of the light. It was several meters down but he could make that distance in seconds. Without hesitation Shouto used his ice to propel himself along the stream and reaching the cave in no time at all.

All of a sudden Shouto came crashing into the cave, startling Momo. He rolled onto his side, tossing the wood in as he slapped his right hand on the ground, creating a huge thick dense wall of ice, sealing the both of them from the outside. "There," he breathed in relief. "That should keep them out.."

"Todoroki! What happened to you!?" Momo exclaimed as she rushed to his side. She knelt beside him, helping him roll onto his back as she saw all the blood smeared across his body.

Shouto attempted to sit up, but he winced in pain when putting pressure on his hand. "Argh... I got attacked by wolves.. A whole pack of them," he informed her as she began to clean the blood from his body with a cloth she had made. He allowed her to inspect his arm, grateful to have her with him. "I managed to kill almost all of them though, but a few landed some hits on me.."

"This is deep. I need to stitch it up and disinfect it," she said while observing where the wolf had a hold of him. "Hold this," she said, moving his other hand to hold the cloth so he wouldn't continue to bleed. Shouto gripped his arm, clenching his eyes shut at the pain.

Momo quickly grabbed their first aide kit and brought the lantern to him, giving herself more light to see his injuries. She quickly and calmly got what she needed out, creating a few extra items that she didn't have. Once she was ready she lightly placed her hand over Shouto's. "I need to sterilize it with alcohol so this is going to sting," she informed him as he pulled his hand away.

"That's fine. What's a little more pain right now?" he breathed, keeping his eyes shut as he readied himself for what was to come.

"Bare with me," she muttered as she removed the cloth that was drenched in blood. She poured some of the sterilizing alcohol over the bite, causing Shouto's body to flex and a growl of pain to escape him. "I'm sorry," Momo said as she pressed her weight on him, holding him down, "you need to stay still."

Shouto gripped his hair, trying to focus his pain elsewhere. "I know!" he grumbled, more annoyed at himself for getting injured. "I'm fine, just do it."

With his go ahead Momo began to stitch the wound. There were two large gashes on his left forearm, both of them nearly shredding his meat down to the bone. The wolf that had latched onto him had a good hold and could have taken his arm off if it wasn't for his Quirk.

"How's it going?" Shouto asked after several minutes had passed. He glanced down at his arm and saw all the dried blood that had coated his skin.

Momo remained focused on her task as she answered, "It's fine. The alcohol should kill bacteria that might have gotten in and I created an ointment I had memorized for an injury such as this." She lifted her eyes briefly, meeting his and then focusing back on the stitches. "It'll take a few days to a week to fully heal, as long as you don't rip the stitches out and apply it daily," she informed him.

"Hopefully we'll be somewhere safe by then," he muttered, closing his eyes and feeling the numbness of his blood loss. "Have you tried the radio again? Contacted anyone?"

"I tried just before you got here. There's still nothing but static," she replied, finishing the first portion of his stitches. "I doubt anything will change until the storm subsides.." She wet another cloth with some water, wiping the blood off his skin so she could see the full wound clearly. "Can you keep talking? Tell me about the wolves.."

He sighed as he felt the sting of the needle pierce him as she began to stitch him up some more. "They were big. Bigger than any wolf I've seen.. And.. They were definitely hunting me - I'm not sure if they've seen a human before... They didn't seem to be scared or curious like most wild animals.. They just attacked..." he said, recalling the way they had watched and chased him.

"If that's the case then we must be on a part of the island that doesn't have any people.."

He was hesitant to speak but he needed to know her thoughts. "What if.. What if this island has no people on it?" he questioned, opening his eyes and looking to her. "Those wolves, they also looked like they had mutated or evolved.. They had two rows of teeth — kind of like a shark... And their claws.. They were like razors..." he recalled.

Momo finished stitching the bite he had received. She looked down at her handy work and patted the blood away. "No humans on the island.. That'd be quite a long shot.. I'm positive that there aren't any inhabited islands between Japan and where I-Island had been," she said as she looked to his bicep where the wolf had cut him.

"Even so... We don't know where we are.. The pilot could have altered our course to try and avoid the storm," Shouto stated, grunting as he shifted. Before Momo could start on his next injury, he sat up. He leaned against the stone wall looking down at his arm. Pain lingered where he had been bitten, but thanks to Momo he didn't have to worry about it — he knew she would take care of him. "This all just sucks..."

Her eyes dropped to his hand and she reached out for him, lightly touching his palm and holding it in hers. "But we both made it so far. Tomorrow we'll investigate the island and keep trying the radio," she assured him, turning her eyes to meet his. She smiled softly at him, in a way Shouto had gotten comfort from. "We'll be okay as long as we have each other."

"Yeah. I know," Shouto quietly replied with a slight upturn of his lips. He grunted as he took his hand back and used what strength he had to stand. "Agh.. Damn that hurts.."

Momo looked up at him, watching as he slowly walked towards the back of the cave and began to gather the wood up. "Todoroki?"

Shouto crouched down and placed the wood in a pile against the wall, lining it up so it would effectively burn. "We need a fire. It's too cold that a blanket won't be enough throughout the night," he stated while lighting flames in his palm and holding it to the wood.

"Even so, I still need to tend to your other wounds," she said as she got up and walked over to join him.

"I'll be fine for a few more minutes," he said, glancing over to her. "This will only last for maybe a half hour. I dropped most of the wood while fending off the wolves, so, warm yourself up while you can."

Momo sat down beside him and leaned her head against his shoulder, letting out a calm breath as she watched the flames overtake the wood. "Worry about yourself for once. You were attacked by wild animals, Todoroki.. You're lucky that you weren't injured worse than this," she said, glancing to his arm.

"I'd be pretty mad if I lost a limb to a wolf.. I've faced down deadly killers before — my brother included.. I'm not being taken out by an animal.." he muttered.

"That's understandable thinking, but if these wolves are how you described then they're not normal and we should be cautious.." Momo said as she sat up straight, putting her hands out to the fire to warm them. "Tomorrow we'll need to keep an eye out. We've been trained to handle danger so I'm confident that we can watch each other's backs."

Shouto knew she was right. They were nearly Pro Heroes and they'd been trained harder than any other generation before. "You're right. We should get some rest then. We've been through a lot tonight," he yawned, feeling all of his fatigue hit him at once.

Momo looked over to Shouto, seeing that he was starting to pass out while sitting up. She felt sympathetic for him — he had done more than enough work for them this night. He deserved to rest.

Before he fell over from his exhaustion, Momo created a pillow for him and placed it on the ground. "Lie down, Todoroki. I'll take care of your other cuts later. They aren't in any serious trouble," she warmly said, lightly edging him down towards the pillow.

Shouto felt the pillow and he immediately felt the desire to rest his head on it and sleep. He laid down and was out like a light. Momo smiled at him, relieved that he was getting rest after what he had just gone through.

I should get some sleep too. Tomorrow is going to be a long day, she thought as she got up to retrieve the lantern and medical supplies she had left on the other end of the cave. She brought them back to their packs and turned the light off as she sat back down between Shouto and the fire. I hope we can get in contact with someone tomorrow.. Or at least locate a town or something..

She picked up the thermal blanket along with two more that she had created earlier and draped them across her and Shouto as she laid beside him. A mild blush spread across her cheeks as she scooted closer to him. It's just to stay warm.. I'm sure he won't mind..
