Dinner With Sam

A week later-

Jessica was slowly getting better. She was more active and becoming her bubbly self once again. The only problem was Danny. Things were still weird between them. It had been a week since she last got a text from him. It was a relief and a worry at the same time. She couldn't help but think something was going on. She tried not to think about it and just worry about herself and the babies.

Jessica laid on her bed with the twins beside her. They laid on their stomachs and giggled.

Jessica was folding their clothes. Wyatt giggled and stared at her as she did so.

"What are you laughing at silly boy?" Jessica says taking his hand.

He keeps his eyes on Jessica as she continues. She makes faces at him and watches him giggle even more. She decides to pull out her phone and records him.

"Can you laugh again for mommy, Wyatt? Please?" She says

He does it again. Jessica records him for a while. Her first instinct was the send it to Danny which is what she did without thinking.

After she did she held her phone in her hand, horrified. Now she just had to wait and see if he'd answer.

Jessica put down her phone then looked at Scarlett who was passed out on her stomach.

Jessica picked her up and held her. "Did tummy time knock you out, little one? Your brother loves it. Why don't you, huh? Is it just too tiring?" Jessica says in a soft baby tone.

Scarlett slowly starts to wake up to the sound of Jessica getting a FaceTime call. Danny was face timing her. As she called her he texted her saying he wanted to see the babies.

Jessica fixed her hair then answered.

"Hey, what's up?" He says

"I'm attempting tummy time for the babies. Scarlett keeps falling asleep. On the another hand Wyatt's doing pretty well." Jessica giggles

"You look beautiful. I miss you." Jessica blushes then lays Scarlett back down on her stomach.

"Thank you. Are you growing a beard?" Jessica raises her eyebrows

"I lost my razor." He chuckles

"Check under the sink in our bathroom. You always have extras in that shoe box."

"Ahh, maybe I should check it." Danny stands up and goes into the bathroom.

"I found it!" He exclaims

"Good"

"Hey, could I see the little ones?"

Jessica flips the camera then shows the babies. They looked around the room with smiles on their faces.

Danny sniffled a bit then smiled. "They've grown so much. God I miss them... I miss you."

Jessica sighs then moves the camera around.

"Jess." Danny says

Jessica flips the camera and looks at him. She wanted to talk to him about how she's felt but she couldn't. She wanted to do it in person.

"Maybe I should try to ask Frank if I can get off work earlier to come see you three. I can't wait until the eighteenth. It's too long." He whines

"Danny, no."

"Do you not want to see me?" His tone changes

"It's not that. It's just I'm almost done with my therapy and I want to finish it."

"Me coming will?" He says, confused as to why it matters.

"Things are just going well for me. I'm getting better. I don't want your boss to be upset with you."

"Are you even-" Danny stopped and shook his head. What he was about to ask Jessica was something that he was too afraid to ask. He siked himself out then changed the subject.

"The therapist has been helping? You are feeling better?"

"I'm feeling better."

"I was worried when you were ignoring me. I just didn't text you this week because I thought maybe you needed space."

"I just had a rough few weeks but I'm doing better."

Danny and Jessica talked on the phone for a few more hours. As much as Jessica didn't mind not talking to Danny, deep down inside she craved to hear his voice. Still, after she talked on the phone with him she still had mixed emotions. It made her think even more. She thought about staying in Minnesota and maybe going her separate ways away from Danny.

While she spent this time in Minnesota she was more relaxed and a lot happier. Being around her family was what she missed so much. She didn't think she'd be ready to leave. Jessica considered possibly renting an apartment. Her parents had been such a great help. They knew she had a lot going on so they wanted to help as much as they could. Jessica would not let them at times because she didn't want them to have to fee responsible for her and the babies. They loved being with them and they always wanted to help. Jessica was grateful for that. She didn't feel so alone like she did in New York.

September 9th-

Jessica and her mother were cleaning dishes while Albert played with the babies.

"Jessie, is that your phone ringing?" Dorthy says looking around

"It might be, one minute." Jessica runs over to her phone and sees that it's Sam.

She let it ring for a while.

"Are you going to answer it?" Dorthy chuckles

"Oh yea."

"Hello?" Jessica says softly

"Jess! Hey, are you still in town?"

"Umm, yep. I'm still here." She giggles

"Great. Do you think you'd be up for dinner tonight? I have all these extra burgers and I'm dying to cook."

"When?"

"Tonight? You can bring the babies."

"Oh really? Well I'd love too."

"Great! How about four- thirty. A little early just because I imagine they have a bed time."

"They do! I'll head over soon. Thank you."

Jessica shuts off her phone and smiles.

"Who was that?" Dorthy asks

"Sam"

"No way! What did he want?"

"He wants the babies and I to come over for dinner."

"Awww! You should go! I bet he's lonely."

"I'll go get the babies ready. Are you sure it's okay if I eat over there?"

"It's perfectly fine!"

**
4:30-

Jessica arrived at Sam's just on time. She stood that the door with both of the babies, a diaper bag, and a stroller. Her hands were completely full.

"Oh my god, jess let me help you!" He says taking the bag and Wyatt's carrier.

"Ahh, thank you!" Jessica says stepping in and setting everything down.

"These babies are so adorable! I can't get over it." He kneels down and plays with Wyatt. Jessica smiled as she watched Sam with him.

"Sorry about all this stuff. When I leave the house with these two and forget something it's never good. I can't take my chances."

"So you bring your closet?" He says in a joking way.

"Yes! This house is very nice. And gosh does it smell good! I didn't know you cooked."

"It's something I took on. Nothing too special. Dinner is ready if you'd like to eat now?"

**
Jessica and Sam sat at the dinner table and the babies watched them eat their burgers. They did lots of catching up. Jessica talked very little of Danny. Sam could tell that something was off. The fact that he wasn't here was strange to him, but he didn't ask.

"I did have a girlfriend, It lasted a month. I ended things when I found out she had a girlfriend."

Jessica tried not to spit out her water from laughing.

She covered her lips then looked at Sam. "I'm sorry for laughing." She says

Sam starts to laugh as well. "No, don't apologize. I find it pretty funny as well." He says

"Relationships suck." Jessica's smile vanishes and she becomes quite.

Sam sighs and looks at her. "They do."

Things remain quite between the two of them. It quickly became awkward.

"I totally just changed the mood! Gosh I just went all dark and twisty." She covers her face and shakes her head.

"It's fine... if you need to talk you can."

Jessica moves her hands then nods. "I'm glad you and I can put the past behind us. Now we can share dinner, talk about life, motherhood, and crazy girlfriends." Jessica giggles

"Speaking of motherhood, you seem to be an amazing mother. And I'm saying this from the bottom of my heart."

"Thank you... I really try my best. Being a mom has put me through the loop but it's all worth it. I love them and I wouldn't have it any other way."

"You really do care for them."

"A lots been going on. I needed a night like this where I could just sit with another adult that isn't my family or Sarah and have long conversations that don't involve what's for dinner or wedding stuff. Don't get me wrong I love my family and Sarah. I think I just missed talking to you in general." Jessica tears up a bit then moves her body away from Sam.

"Hey... how about we go and watch some TV with beer like we did when we were younger? We can just talk it out."

**

9pm-

Jessica had taken only a few sips of beer while talking to Sam. They sat across from each other on the couch talking about random things. Sam talked about his dating life and Jessica opened up a bit about her problems after the babies. He made her feel better about all of it. Sam made sure Jessica knew that what she was doing, staying in Minnesota, wasn't the wrong thing. Jessica didn't say anything about her feelings towards Danny at the moment. All Sam knew was that Jessica needed to be in Minnesota and he had work.

"Life is fucked up and twisted. The only thing I want to do is protect my kids from the craziness." Jessica says swinging her bottle around.

"But you need to let them learn and experience."

"True! God what am I going to do when they are older."

"Have more babies?" Sam smirks

"I don't know. Child birth hurts. I carried those adorable babies for nine months. My pregnancy was almost as painful and uncomfortable as the labor." Jessica giggles

The twins were sleeping peacefully. Jessica checked the time and decided that maybe she should get them home.

"Do you want another beer?" He says

"Oh my god! I didn't even think! I have to breastfeed. I can't now, I have alcohol in my system." Jessica sets her bottle down and throws her head back.

"Oh crap, I'm sorry."

Jessica starts to laugh unexpectedly. "I'm a mom..."

"You are!" Sam chuckles

"I wish I could drink... but I can't. I have to drive them home and maybe try to pump all the bad milk out. Luckily I pumped for them earlier." Jessica stands up and fixes her shirt.

"Maybe you and I can get another drink at Sarah's wedding?"

"Yes! I'm so glad you are coming!"

Jessica looks at Sam for a while then moves her body close to his. She holds him and he holds her as they share a long hug. She let it all in the broke away from him.

"Thank you so much... tonight was great. We will have to get together again!"

"Yes! For sure! Let me help you with all your stuff!"

**

12-

When Jessica got home the babies kept waking up. She wasn't able to sleep so she stayed awake on her phone, pumping. Sam then started to text her.

*We never drank the iced tea!*

*Darn! Next time!*

*For sure... I'm glad we can have a next time*
