Chapter 5
The twolegs who had taken him in started to come towards him. he hissed arching his back and speeding away. The twolegs were kind to him but that was no excuse. He had to get out of this horrible place. He had been taken away from the forest, but he had no idea how far. He went out of a flap at the entrance of the twolegs nest. He sighed. He was on the countryside on a small farm. He padded through. He decided to explore this and the surrounding places and then tomorrow he'd try and find his way home. He padded around. He was thirsty but not for the filthy water the twoleg would give him. He spotted a stream and ran towards it. He lapped up the water thirstily not even realizing how familiar the water tasted from the one back RiverClan. He sighed. His ears pricked as he remembered something. If him and Berrypaw were asleep at the same time they could share a dream! He hopped excitedly. He'd try and contact her tonight hoping she would be asleep at the same time he was. His tail flicked excitedly. He could tell her about the place and see if she recognized it or ask others if they did. Then he could finally get out of here!
He went through the day checking out the temporary home. When the sun started to set, he raced back to the twoleg nest not even acknowledging them. He closed his eyes letting sleep take him.
He willed his dreams to let him see Berrypaw. A soft faraway sounding voice whispered, Robbinpaw? He pricked his ears. At first, he didn't recognize the voice then he realized it was Berrypaw. "Berrypaw!" he called out to her. There was silence for a moment. "Robbinpaw! Are you ok!?" he couldn't see her, but he could hear her. "I'm fine! The twolegs took me to their nest and I can't find my way home. But I figured I could try and contact you through our dreams like we did last time." He explained to her. "But I can't see you." She told him. "I know, I can't either. I think were too far away." She sighed. "Probably." Then he remembered what he wanted to tell her. "Berrypaw. I need you to help find me. Go to WindClan and tell them what happened." "But just say you saw me hunting near the bridge then twolegs took me. It would be better to leave out the part where we were meeting..." he added. "Ok. But first, tell me your surroundings." She told him. he told her about the farm and the stream and how the stream tasted like the one back at RiverClan. She listened intently. "Ok," she started. "Follow the stream and see where it leads. I'll tell WindClan and see if they can help me look for you." "Alright." Robbinpaw said. He felt a jolting sensation much like the one he'd had last time. "I'm waking up. If I can't find you in the next day go to sleep that night so we can talk." He told her. He felt himself falling then woke with a jolt. The twoleg was kneeling next to him shaking him awake. Once he lifted his head the twoleg set down a hollow stone of kittypet food then backed away. Robbinpaw got up and ate it quickly then dashed out the kittypet flap. He sniffed his way to the rushing stream he'd walked by the other day. He followed the stream, the shore was slippery, but he figured it would be fine. He got impatient and started running. He was eager to return home and didn't sense the ditch ahead of him. he slipped in the ditch twisting his paw in an awkward direction and falling into the rushing stream. The stream was freezing cold and deeper than he'd expected. he almost didn't feel the pain as the cold water numbed it. He struggled in the water but every time he tried moving his front left paw it stung him so bad, he almost forgot to swim. He yelped in pain as he tried moving his paws again. The water covered his head for a moment, but he used his hind paws to kick himself back up to the surface. He gasped for air. Robbinpaw shivered. It felt as if he were stuck inside a block of ice. He almost couldn't take the pain anymore. It might just be easier to close my eyes... he thought, but as he started to close his eyes something grabbed him, and he blinked his eyes open. he was pulled out of the water his pelt soaking wet. He smelled the twolegs scent. He heard the twoleg talking in soft mews to him. Surprisingly, he felt safe now that the twoleg had saved him. The twoleg carried him for a short while before walking back into his twoleg nest. The twoleg set him down in a soft kittypet bed. He lay there thinking about Berrypaw and how he'd let her down. he was so stupid. If only he'd gone slower, he'd have sensed the ditch. He wanted to contact Berrypaw again, but he doubted she'd be asleep now. She'd be out there looking for him... but she'd probably never find him now. He sighed. He heard a sound and pricked his ears. He smelled another cat though he didn't know the scent of them. He slowly limped toward the flap then squeezed through. "Hello?" He called. "Hello." He heard she cats voice say. "I'm Quinn." The kittypet said. She sounded a little miserable. Typical kittypet name. he thought. "I'm Robbinpaw." He told her. Her eyes widened. "Really? A-are you a clan cat?" she asked though she didn't sound scared but deep in thought. "Yes... I am." he told her confused. She asked. "If you're a clan cat then what are you doing here?" Quinn asked. His head drooped. "I was taken by twolegs..." he murmured. "I was taken once too." Quinn said staring at the ground. "My clan and friends are going to find me soon though and help me get out of here." He added. "Well, then you better hope they do. Good luck." she said with a smile before leaping over the fence back to her own nest. He sighed. He was stuck here, wasn't he? He limped back through the flap. The twoleg came over and picked him up setting him near a bowl of the kittypet food. He wrinkled his nose but slowly brought his head over and ate it. He was starving and he couldn't really go out and hunt. When he came in the twoleg had locked the kittypet flap so he couldn't get out again. He sighed and lay down in the kittypet bed. He curled up in a ball drifting to sleep.
He'd shared no dreamswith Berrypaw as he slept. He yawned and stretched sitting up. He heard faintvoices. His ears pricked. He thought he'd heard Berrypaws and Dapperclawsvoice... No. I must be hearing thing. He thought shaking his head. Helimped over to his water bowl to drink some water but before he could heBerrypaws voice again. This time he knew he heard it. "Berrypaw?" he meowed. Hedidn't hear any response. He followed to where he heard the voices loudest. Hegot to a wall where the voices were loudest. They seemed to be on the otherside of the wall. "Berrypaw?" he called again. The voices instantly stopped."Robbinpaw?" he heard the voice of Dapperclaw say. "Dapperclaw!" he exclaimed."You guys are here!" he said a smile growing on his face. "Robbinpaw! I can'tbelieve we found you!" she meowed happily. He purred. "Can you get out ofthere?" He heard Dapperclaw ask. "I don't think so. The twolegs locked thekittypet flap." He told them. "Hmm..." Dapperclaw thought for a moment. "Lookaround and see if you can find a gap to squeeze through anywhere." Dapperclawtold him. "Ok." He said and limped off. He sniffed around brushing his peltagainst the wall feeling for anything hollow. He smelled the fresh scent oftrees and figured there must be a gap somewhere. He smelled the scent growingstronger and limped in the direction of it. He leaped up onto a leg andsqueezed through a narrow gap. He leaped down feeling the soft grass touch hispaws. "I'm over here!" he called. He heard paws rushing forward. "Robbinpaw!"she purred rubbing her pelt against hers. She pulled away quickly as the otherscame around the corner. Dapperclaw rushed over, and he smelled Fernpaw andBoulderfall behind him. Fernpaw purred nuzzling his cheek lovingly. He feltBerrypaws unease. Fernpaw pulled away. "I'm so glad you're ok." She saidhappily. "Berrypaw told us what happened." Boulderfall said. He nodded toBerrypaw. "Thank you." Robbinpaw said. She smiled. "Now let's get back tocamp." Dapperclaw said. "Ok." Robbinpaw said. Dapperclaw rushed up and over thefence the other following quickly. He was left in the back limping slowly alongkeeping off his injured paw. Dapperclaw saw he was limping. The others wererushing ahead. "Hey guys wait!" Dapperclaw called leaping back down the fenceand padding towards him. "You, ok?" he asked. Robbinpaw didn't know how toexplain it to him. "I just twisted my paw its fine." Robbinpaw said and triedto show Dapperclaw by putting his weight on it. He almost fell over as a freshwave of pain shot through him when he put weight on it. Dapperclaw rushed tohis side letting him lean on him. "Come on. Let's get you back to camp." Berrypawand Fernpaw leaped down and stood by him with equal worried expressions.Berrypaw stood on his other side keeping him up and Boulderfall stood on thetop of the fence waiting. They leaped up onto the fence. Dapperclaw was infront of him and Berrypaw was behind. He balanced himself on the fence thenlimped after the rest of the group. They reached the forest padding along theedge of it. Dapperclaw said they were close to WindClan territory, but it feltlike they'd been walking forever. Finally, they reached the moor. They traveledacross the long grass brushing past his legs. Dapperclaw and Berrypaw helpedhim back to camp and Fernpaw and Boulderfall padded close behind. They walkedthrough the rocky tunnel back into camp. He smelled all the fresh scents ofcats and sighed relieved they were home. "Robbinpaw?" he heard Hawkwing ask."Your back!" he exclaimed rushing over to him purring. Robbinpaw purred back."Good to see you Hawkwing." Cats started to come out of their dens. Palemoonpadded over. Her nose wrinkled as she sniffed him. "You smell like twolegs."She said with a confused look. She obviously hadn't heard so he explained it toher. Her eyes were wide with surprise by the time he was done. "Hawkwing." Heheard Boulderfall say behind him and turned their way. Hawkwing turned too."Yes?" he asked. "We think Robbinpaw injured his hind leg could you take a lookat it?" he asked. Hawkwing sighed suppressing a smile. "You go to the medicineden so much I feel like I'm going to be an elder sooner than I thought." Hesaid chuckling and gestured him over to the medicine den. He sat down in thecorner as Hawkwing circled him examining is leg. "It looks fine enough. Illpress I few herbs into the wounds but that's all it needs." He said and paddedoff to grab some herbs. He waited patiently. Only just realizing all was quiethe pricked his ears. He listened intently for a few moments until he heard afierce yowl from outside and wails of pain and leaped to his paws. He rushedout the den Hawkwing calling for him to stop but he ignored him. He stumbledinto the clearing smelling blood and heard claws being ripped across faces. Hesnarled sensing a cat bounding at him from behind and briskly dodged itpouncing at the fallen cat. He bit his claws into his throat. By the sound ofit, RiverClan had held a surprise attack. He let go of the cat's throat andstill bleeding badly it limped off muttering insults under its breath. He rantowards the strongest smell of blood and as he was about to pounce on a she-cathe thought he almost recognize; he heard a familiar call for help then realizedto his horror it was Berrypaw. He sprang away from the she-cat and towards Berrypaw."Help!" she wailed her voice growing weaker and he scented Berrypaw andDapperclaw fighting. To what it sounded like Dapperclaw had pinned her and wasin the process of killing her. He leaped at Dapperclaw tackling him by surpriseand he fell over toppling off Berrypaw. "Wha-?" Dapperclaw said looking around. He was about to law his face when he saw it was him. "Robbinpaw? What'd you dothat for?!" he yowled madly at him. "O-oh I didn't know that was you. I thoughtyou were someone else... sorry." He mumbled getting off Dapperclaw. Dapperclawsgaze softened. "I'm sorry for yelling Robbinpaw. I know it's hard when you can'tsee but right now, I think our clanmates need us. Come on!" he said sprintingback in to battle and Robbinpaw stumbled after him. He could sense Berrypaw waswatching him but didn't dare turn around. He limped on after his mentor. Hisleg felt worse from getting on it so quickly. "Stop right there." He heard adeep grumble say from behind. He froze. He knew that voice. Bramblenose...he thought. Bramblenose was the fiercest warrior in RiverClan he could snap a dog'sneck in a heartbeat. The thought sent a shiver down his spine, and he turned fixinghis blind gaze on the tom. Robbinpaw snarled his fur bristling. Bramblenosecrouched about to pounce. Robbinpaw got ready to dash to the side but at thatmoment a wave of pain washed through his leg, and he collapsed on the ground. WithBramblenoses deadly claws unsheathed he leaped with a yowl landing flat on hisback knocking the air out of Robbinpaw. He gasped as Bramblenose lifted a claw. The claw tore down and only a moment before the claw touched his face a graybody blocked him the claw slashing against the cat's face. His rescuer wailedin pain and stumbled in a heap of blood collapsing on the ground. He yelpedleaping to his paws not knowing who was lying there. he took no notice ofBramblenoses groan as he hit the ground a few tail lengths away and approachedthe cat. When he could sense the scent of the cat his heart almost stopped. "Fernpaw!"he wailed and stood over her in horror. She groaned in pain her face wascovered in blood where the claw had raked it. Any longer and she'd die of bloodloss. He tried to lift her, but his legs buckled, and she fell with a thump. "Fernpaw..."he whispered. She looked at him with big blur sad eyes. "R- Robbinpaw..." shemurmured. "I- I'm sorry... even I- If you didn't know I'd always loved you... you gaveme a feeling I could never forget e- even if you love someone else..." she saidglancing at Berrypaw. Tears spilled down his face. "Its fine Fernpaw! I'll getyou to the medicine den! You'll be alright!" he tried to say encouragingly buthis voice cracked knowing there was no hope. She gave him a faint smile thenher body shuddered and fell limp. "NO!" he yowled pressing his muzzle into herpelt. "I- I loved you too..." he said quietly in her ear. he felt numb her furgrowing icy cold. He lifted his head knowing he couldn't let her die in vain. Rageflared through him giving him strength. He yowled springing at Bramblenose. He leaptonto his back as Bramblenose stumbled forward. Robbinpaw dug his claws into hisneck and Bramblenose groaned in pain trying to shake him off, but he just dughis claws in father. He could sense Bramblenose getting weaker. Bramblenosecollapsed and he let out a yowl of triumph. He stood there the sadness rushingthrough him. he wanted to curl up and never wake. He wanted to lay by Fernpawtill he could no longer breathe. He wanted to stare into the darkness for therest of eternity. But he didn't. he wouldn't. he couldn't. he knew that.Fernpaw was in StarClan now rushing through the moors the stars glinting aroundher. He hoped she was watching him. Legs shaking, he stumbled forward andrushed into the battle the rage of losing Fernpaw pulsing through him. Hewouldn't let another cat down. He couldn't.
