Chapter 3
He felt the soft wet moss under him. He smelled the strong scent of the river and all the fish the cats would catch. He was in RiverClan camp. He sniffed again and smelled herbs and blood, he was in the Medicine den. He opened his eyes but to his horror and surprise he could not see. He shook his head but all he saw was darkness like he was still closing his eyes. He started to hyperventilate. "Calm down." He heard a voice say. It was Ashfur's kind voice. "I have good news and shocking news." "Good news: your healed. shocking news: your blind." It was as if Ashfur had said those words in slow motion. "Blind!?" he echoed fear showing in his mew. He could barely even breathe. He understood now. Peachflower, a young tabby queen had blinded him. He snarled. "Peachflower." He spat her name with disgust. Peachflower was Leopardstripe's best friend, and he could recognize her bright orange and white pelt anywhere. "Don't talk about Peachflower like that!" He heard a younger voice say. "How'd I get here anyways? I'm not RiverClan anymore." "Oh, I know that, but Berrypaw took you here. She said she couldn't just let Peachflower kill you, which she would have if Berrypaw wasn't there." Ashfur said. Robbinpaw fell silent. How was Berrypaw so nice to a traitor? He thought. He shook his head. "I have to get back to WindClan camp. But thanks anyways..." he got to his paws and stumbled to the entrance of the den. A pelt rushed up against him. He smelled Berrypaw but quickly shook her off. "I'm fine." He snapped back at her trying to stumble faster to find his way out of camp. "Watch out-" he heard Berrypaws voice start but as he turned his head around but as he did, he felt his paws hit something and he fell face first into the dirt twisting his paw. He tried muffling a small yelp of pain. She rushed towards him and Robbinpaws pelt prickled with annoyance, but he did not fight back this time as Berrypaw helped him up. "Here, let me help you back to WindClan." He sighed but let her lean on him as they slowly walked back. As they crossed the bridge where they had fought, he could smell blood, but it was silent. They found their way across the border between the two clans and soon he could smell the scents growing stronger and he heard the talking of cats sharing tongues. They stumbled through the camp entrance, and he could sense heads turning towards their racket. "Robbinpaw!" he heard a cat yowl. Berrypaw backed away from his side and he almost fell forward but another cat caught him. He scented Dapperclaw. He regained his balance. "Thanks-" he mumbled. "Where were you?" Dapperclaw asked not even glancing at Berrypaw. "Well, I remember my vision going black when Peachflower clawed at my face and then Berrypaw knocking her off then she knocked me out. And I woke up in RiverClan camp inside their medicine den... and Ashfur was taking care of me... and..." It was hard for him to think with all the pain. "Come on. Let us get you to the medicine den then you can tell me what happened later." "Oh, and Berrypaw you can head back to your camp." Berrypaw nodded and rushed off. Dapperclaw helped him to the medicine den and helped him into a nest. He collapsed in the nest. Instead of leaving the den Dapperclaw sat by his nest watching him with a worried look. "Hawkwing, can you tell whats wrong with him?" Dapperclaw asked. "Well, I'll have to take a good look at him first then I can see whats wrong." Hawkwing explained. "Grab me some poppyseeds, will you? They help with pain." He heard Dapperclaw stand and pad over to the stock of herbs. He brought back a few Poppyseeds and placed them by Robbinpaws mouth. Hawkwing nudged them forward. "Go on. Eat them up." He did obediently and lapped at them with his tongue. They had a slight tang to it, but he barely noticed as he was lost in thought. He could not get the warm scent and kind voice of Berrypaw out of his head. His eyes grew heavy as the poppyseeds started to affect him. "Oh..." he heard Hawkwing say. "What is it?" Dapperclaw demanded. "He's blind..." Hawkwing said quietly. But before Robbinpaw could hear the rest his eyes closed, and he fell asleep. In his dream he saw Berrypaw was there. Her light green eyes shining like emeralds, and her orange pelt with white spots. Her tail slim and fluffy. The scene suddenly changed. He saw Dapperclaw and Hawkwing around him. Except it was as if he was watching from the skies. He saw his body lying there. Hawkwing and Dapperclaws mouths were moving frantically as if yowling, but he could not hear a thing. Then he realized what was going on. He was going to StarClan. He was dying. No! he tried to yowl but he could not even hear his own voice. Light was starting to surround his vision. The light consumed him. All he saw was white for a few moments before a cat appeared a few fox lengths away from him. "Hello Robbinpaw." The she cat looked at him with kind eyes. "No! I do not want to die! Please no!" "Don't worry young one. It's not your time yet." The she purred. He felt a jolt of pain. He gasped. The cat disappeared and he felt himself falling. He tried flailing but nothing could stop him. The ground where his body was laying was getting closer and closer. He expected to feel pain as he hit the ground, but he did not. He lifted his head. He heard Hawkwing scrambling around the den. "He's awake!" Dapperclaw yowled and Hawkwing's head turned. Hawkwing rushed over to his side and sighed in relief. "You almost died." Dapperclaw told him. "I- I know... this cat told me it wasn't my time then I felt myself falling..." Hawkwing put a paw to his mouth. "Shh... your still weak. Just get some rest but try not to fall asleep again, ok?" Robbinpaw lay his head on his paws and tried not to close his eyes. It was a while, the whole time he could feel the herbs being pressed against his wounds. Soon all his wounds were patched with cobwebs and had stopped bleeding. He felt slightly better but was still very tired. "Robbinpaw, Dapperclaw will help you to the apprentice den. I want you to sleep as long as you can tonight, and then tomorrow you'll feel better." Hawkwing said. Dapperclaw agreed and helped him to his paws padding alongside him all the way to his nest in the apprentice den. He lay down and Dapperclaw left the apprentice taking one last worried glance back at him. A young she about his age came up to him. "Hi, I'm Fernpaw." She spoke. "I have the name because when I was born, I got into a patch of ferns on accident. That is how a got this scar right here. I scratched my muzzle against the branch. See?" Robbinpaw looked at his paws for a moment before muttering, "I can't see..." he looked to the side. "Oh... I am sorry... I thought you could... You must have been just blinded because you could see before the battle with RiverClan, right?" he nodded. "A RiverClan queen did this to me after I killed her friend Leopardstripe." Fernpaw looked at her paws. "I'm sorry... I shouldn't be asking you these questions... their none of my business." "No, no its ok." She smiled and sat in his nest beside him flicking her tail flirtatiously. She gave a small purr. "You should get some sleep." She stood padding back over to her nest across the den. "Good night." She called before curling up in a ball falling asleep. He did the same. Fernpaw was nice. He fell asleep peacefully at last after the long day.
"Boulderfall, Palemoon, Fernpaw and Robbinpaw. You will be the hunting patrol." The four cats headed for the entrance of camp. Fernpaw padded along beside him. He almost blushed. The patrol headed out. "You are sure your good enough to go hunting?" Boulderfall asked Robbinpaw. "I'm fine." He said flicking his tail annoyed. "Just because I'm blind doesn't mean I can't hunt. My senses are still as sharp as before." He pricked his ears listening for prey. He scented rabbit. Dropping into a perfect hunting crouch he crept to where he smelled the rabbit strongest. Stalking into the long grass he spotted the rabbit. Nice and plump in a small clearing. He stalked forward until he was close enough to pounce. He got ready then at the last moment leaped into the air snarling and landing straight on the rabbit before it had time to run. He bit into its neck snapping it. Fernpaw rushed over. "Good job!" she said in her usually sweet voice. "Thanks. Take this back to camp, would you?" he asked Fernpaw. "Sure." He could hear a bit of disappointment in her meow but did it anyway. Boulderfall and Palemoon padded forward. "Nice catch." They congratulated him. "It was nothing. I've done better." He said with a twitch of his tail. Whirling around he walked into the long patches of grass to find more prey. A few moments later Fernpaw returned. She sniffed the air. "I smell mice!" she hissed quietly and snuck into the bushes. He followed her on silent paws listening from a distance. She stalked towards a small mouse sitting under a fallen branch next to a large oak. Her tail swished through the grass as she moved. She pounced but when she brought her paws up but there was no mouse. "Mouse dung!" she hissed. He came over and sat beside her wrapping his tail around her. "Hey, its fine. It was just a mouse. We can catch more." She smiled at him warmly. Palemoon came out through the bushes. "Stop flirting you two we've got prey to hunt." She had a glint of amusement though Robbinpaw could not see it. He blushed and he sensed Fernpaw did too. They stood and went back off to catch prey. By the time they came back to camp each one of them was holding at least two pieces of prey. "Good job you guys." Volcanicstar said as he padded forward. He set the prey at the prey-pile taking a small rabbit for himself. He took it two a small rock to eat. A pelt brushed along his side lovingly. "Mind if I eat with you?" Fernpaws voice asked. "No, not at all." Robbinpaw replied. She sat down beside him and started to eat a sparrow she had caught. She purred. He thought of Fernpaw as a friend, but she looked like she thought- different. He swallowed the last bit of his mouse. Standing he turned towards her. "I'm going to go take a walk. Alone." He added quickly. "I'll be back soon." "Ok. I'll see you later!" she called after him as he stalked off. He trotted outside of camp. He sighed heading in the direction of the gorge. He could hear the rushing water down in the gorge as he walked beside the edge. He was so lost in thought he did not even hear the paws approaching him until a paw tapped at his shoulder. He jumped whirling around. To his surprise he saw Berrypaw. "Berrypaw? What are you doing here?! You'll get in trouble!" Robbinpaw exclaimed. "Well, we won't be in trouble if they don't catch us. And... heh, heh ... I am sorry about knocking you out last time we met..." "Oh ye that is fine. I wasn't too good myself." She laughed softly. Smiling at him she purred brushing her pelt against his. He purred and nuzzled her cheek. "Friends?" Robbinpaw asked. "Friends." Berrypaw agreed. They sat there at the edge of the gorge watching as the sun went down. he stood finally. "It's getting late. Our clans will be wondering where we are." She nodded. "Alright. Let us get back. But meet me here tomorrow at sunset." "Ok. I'll see you then." Robbinpaw replied smiling. As he walked back, he had realized he had never felt that way before. Around Berrypaw it was like a whole other world. He smiled to himself. He jumped back down into camp where Fernpaw was waiting for him. "That was a while. Are you ok?" she asked him concerned. "Oh, I'm fine." He said that dreamy look still hinting in his eyes. "Oh... ok. I'll be in the apprentice den..." she padded off. He felt a little guilty but followed her. He settled down in his nest closing his eyes. He tried to sleep but he could not stop thinking about Berrypaw. He felt a pelt brush against him, but he sniffed but didn't smell anyone. Fernpaw was already asleep, and the other few apprentices were out eating or doing chores still. A voice whispered in his ear, sleep. The voice was soft, and he did obediently Robbinpaw lie his head down and closed his eyes.
