Chapter Four
Nick wanted to go to a dark corner and be sick. However, he was in shock about what he was seeing. Nick got up and climb back on the edge and started breathing hard. As he was coughing his breath Mitch turned and looked down at him. Nick was paler than when he saw Mitch after four years. Mitch kneeled down and smiled. Nick turned and saw Mitch staring at him. He jumped in fear and took a deep breath again.
"Did you see my torn body?" Mitch asked knowing the answer.
"You look scared. Are you scared of me Nick?" Mitch asked another question waiting for him to answer.
"Why aren't you talking? You're looking at the ground and not me. Why is that? You looked at me when I died. Why is this any different? After four years you didn't think you would see your victim didn't you?" Mitch asked question after question.
"You shouldn't be here. Your dead you can't be here. Why can I see you? What am I supposed to say after seeing your dead body?! This is different your not human anymore Mitch! I feel guilty after what I did. I know sorry won't fix anything. Just get out of my head this is all just a dream!" Nick ranted on and on, as he hit his head on his hands to wake up from this nightmare.
"You are not dreaming Nick. This isn't a nightmare either. However, you do need to wake up," Mitch signed with a calm voice.
Nick tried standing up and when he did Mitch was nowhere to be seen and everything was still the same. He went to check the time but nothing came up. Nothing would work. He tried calling 911 but wouldn't work. His texts would work. It was like he was dead. Nick tried to stay calm and not panic and walked up the stairs. As he walked up the stairs there was a poster. It was a poster that said, "Remember". Remember what? What was there to remember other than his friend's death he caused?
Nick shook his head and got to the top of the stairs. Everything was dark apart from the half-working street lights. Chicago felt dead and empty. No one was around not even a moving car or phone ringing. Is this his mind playing tricks on him? What did Mitch mean about him needing to wake up? However, he said this wasn't a dream or a nightmare. So why would he need to wake up?
"If this isn't a dream nor a nightmare. How am I supposed to wake up?" Nick yelled as he looked at the dark sky.
No answer. Mitch didn't say a word after all he was gone. Nick was alone once again like he was for four years. Nick hated this he need to wake up but how? He was already awake. Then he heard a heart monitor beeping over and over again. This time it was louder than before. Nick ran and ran as the sound got louder then it stopped. Nick ended up in a garden.
"This is where Mitch would go if he was upset," Nick remembered.
Nick sat down in the same spot he would usually sit. He leaned against an old tree and closed his eyes. Then he woke up hearing the heart monitor again but it sounded faint. He got up and listened for the sound as it came from the left. Nick turned around and ran to the sound hoping to find out why a heart monitor was on. As he ran through the rubble of the old city the heart monitor sound stopped.
Nick missed it again and he ended up at a grave. It was his dog's grave that died two years ago. Her name was Saddy and she was a sweet dog. She had a heart disease and Nick never saw her again. Then he heard the monitor again but this time it was to his right through the hiking woods.
