Chapter 14

......

"You're Divergent," Eric says with disgust.

He pressed the cool tip of the gun against my head. I know he's going to kill me. I sit there, hands tied behind my back. My hands are in chains. I'm able to jump, so I jump on my feet.  I do a flip in the air, kicking Eric in the face.

"Take her to Erudite," Four commands.

Eric and Four drag me over to this huge, long, narrow, limo-like, black car. They strap me to the seat. I see Eric press the large gun to my head.

Then, my world went black.

......

My eyes are hazy in the infirmary. Everything seems to spin as I am trapped in bed. My arms and legs are strapped to the uncomfortable bed around me. I take a look at my left leg, blown up like a ballon. It got a lot thinner in the time I've spent laying here. My bones ache, but not nearly as bad as before. All the reasons to stay here are limited. I do not like this place. I absolutely despise it.

I look around me. Sage is laying to my right, his eyes fluttering open. He doesn't look too bad. He has a slightly bruised neck, though. The infirmary healed it pretty well. I see Becky to my left, who got beaten pretty bad.

"Kat?" she asks in disbelief, "You lost?"

I nod. "Who were you put to fight against?"

"Natalia," Becky replies with a sigh.

"I don't think she would ever do that!" I yell in shock.

"She's a jerk in secret. I know," she replies.

"That's an unfair match!' I yell in protest.

"Eric put me with her," she replies calmly.

I shake my head. "If Erica doesn't die, I'll murder him myself."

Becky sheds a slight smile. I'm glad I made her happy. Extremely glad. My stubby nails are bleeding.

"How did this happen?" I ask in shock.

"You cried and bit your nails in your sleep," she replies.

I nod. I most likely cried from my instant death or my discovery, not sure what. I'm not afraid of my death... Or my discovery... But, I am afraid of Marcus. And I'm afraid of fear itself.  I look back at Sage. His eyes are slightly fluttering open. Sage's glasses are slightly cracked and his bruised neck is going away. Jo walks into the infirmary.

"Kat?" she asks in disbelief, "YOU LOST?!"

I nod in defeat. "Sometimes we win, sometimes we lose."

"We need to win!" she yells.

"Due to statistics, people who win more become less successful in the long term," I mutter quietly.

"You're incredibly smart," she says, "Like an Erudite."

Oh no. This might be the discovery.

"You sure you aren't Sage?" Becky asks playfully.

I feel like giving her a playful nudge but both our bodies are in awful shape. I see Nathan on the other side of the infirmary, still knocked out cold. His eyes were shut tight, surrounded by tons and tons of bruises. I can't even count how many bruises he has on his body, there are so many! Jo sneezes in my direction, snapping me back into the conversation I had with her and Becky.

"Sorry, were you gazing at a boy?" Jo asks playfully.

I sigh and roll my eyes "JO!" I exclaim, "HECK NO!"

Jo gazes at Nathan lovingly.

"He's just so cute!" Jo yells.

I sigh at Jo's ironically stupid actions. She's probably making fun of me, but I'll never know for sure "Jo, you have a crush on EVERYONE!" I exclaim, putting emphasis on everyone.

"Oh, God," Sage mutters, pushing up his cracked glasses to the bridge of his nose, "I wish Matt wouldn't have broke these glasses. I can't replace them in Dauntless, I have to go back to Erudite, but they won't let me back in."

I nod. "How was Erudite?"

"I actually did pretty well, surprising enough. Just got into too much trouble!" he yells playfully, "In Erudite, my parents were best friends with Jeanine Matthews. They worked for her, often had her tutor me and thousands of other stupid things."

"Jeanine tutored you?" I ask with shock, "You're intelligent!"

"Not to Erudite. To the Erudite, I was always falling behind in class, called names, and my parents were weird people," he says.

"I can only imagine," Becky mutters with sympathy.

"You're awfully sweet for a Candor," Sage notices.

Becky smiles. "Compared to my jerk brother, sure. He'll beat you up in a heartbeat."

Sounds like Marcus to me. I remember him beating me up every day after he came home from work, the leather sides of the belt touching my skin and creating scars. Now, I'm in Dauntless, and scars will be normal in a matter of time.

"Is he in Dauntless?" I ask.

"He tried. Now, he's in factionless," she says.

The sun sets in the background. The infirmary nurse comes into the room.

"You guys are free to go," she says.

I limp back to my dorm room alongside Jo and Becky, and then, I fall asleep.
