Chapter 13

Watching people throw numerous amounts of punches at each other makes me want to laugh. I have to hide my Candor. I just have to. Nathan taps my shoulder lightly.

"Yea?" I ask softly.

"Watch the stupidity of these people," Nathan starts, "Kicking and punching like they're acting brave. They're not brave. They're stupid."

"Dauntless is for bravery, not stupidity. This better be brave, then," I reply.

"Come on, use your brain, Kat!" Nathan whisper/yells, "These people are complete idiots. They will break each other in half!"

Four looks over at us.

"Calm down, Nathan," I say.

Somebody else taps my shoulder.

"First jumper, huh? Second jumper? Surprised to see you arguing, Nathan, stiff," the boy from behind me says.

I turn around, only to see a person who looks a lot like Nathan, but with pale, white, vampire-like skin. "Who might you be?"

"Matt," the muscular boy says, "Nathan, I thought you transferred, no?"

"I didn't run away, Matt," Nathan says dismissively.

Matt looks Nathan in the eye, then shrugs it off. Nathan shrugs, too, looking Matt in the eye.

"How long have you known each other?" I ask in disbelief.

"My whole life," Nathan says softly, just realizing what he had just said.

Matt nods in approval.

"You just realized he was here?" I ask.

Nathan glares at Matt, while Matt just stands there, nodding his head away. It makes me want to vomit, how much Nathan glares at people. Uriah thinks he should be arrested for being creepy. It's pretty ridiculous, but Uriah has a point. Uriah knows that Nathan is extremely creepy. Everyone knows. Everyone except for Nathan himself. And that troubles me.

Bang! David and Daniel both punch each other in the face at the same time, and then fall down. Their world just went black. Their limp bodies fall into the cold hard ground of the fighting rink. Their heads bounce as soon as they slam onto the ground. Daniel's bloody nose and David's bloody collar bone makes me flinch. I can't jump now. I can't cower away until I'm alone. My Abnegation side still shows. I want to help Daniel, because he's my friend, and because it hurts to see anyone suffer. It hurts my heart. Even speaking badly towards Marcus slowly damaged me. I didn't feel it in Abnegation, but as soon as I transferred, I felt it bad. My guts feel betrayed. More betrayed then normal. It just hurts me! I can't explain it.

"Sage? Take Daniel to the infirmary. And Tom, you take David," Four announces, as he starts to clean up the blood.

I look back at Nathan, seeing his facial expression tighten.

"Nathan, you nervous?" I ask.

He nods. Matt pats his shoulder as a sign of comfort. Matt mumbles something into Nathan's ear, while Nathan just sighs.

"I'm not a coward, Matt," Nathan says, as he places his hand in front of Matt, stopping him instantly.

"Good luck," Matt and I say.

"Matt, Kat, Dauntless don't reply on luck. They rely on skill," Nathan says. It sounds like something Four would say, "Then we could gobble up on Dauntless cake. The only dessert I don't enjoy."

He laughs like Uriah would. He has that classic sarcastic, smirk, laid on his face like a permanent tattoo. Nathan tucks a strand of his African American hair behind his left ear.

"Nathan and Brad," Four announced.

The match was perfectly fair. Both boys were muscular. Brad was slightly taller than Nathan, but Nathan has much more leg power than Brad does. Brad has that smirk while Nathan carries a manipulative look on his face. Everyone starts talking about how long this fight is going to take. Shocked faces and gasps take over the group of initiates while Uriah claps his hands loudly.

"START!" he roars over the loud talk that lays over the crowd.

Nathan lets Brad make the first move. Brad makes a move to punch Nathan in the face, but he misses. Nathan tries to kick Brad in the shin, but he misses. I've never seen him miss a punch before. That's pretty shocking in itself. He normally aims perfectly. I don't know what is making him miss. Sometimes we win, sometimes we lose. That's just life.

I turn around and look at Matt. He sighs.

"Hey," I murmur.

"Hey," Matt replies.

"What's up with Nathan?" I ask.

"Dunno," Matt replies with the slightest shake of his head.

"Are you sure?" I interrogate.

"No, then," Matt teases, "I'm only sure if you're sure."

I nudge him lightly in the elbow, laughing.

"C'mon, himme harder," Matt teases, and I hit him harder.

"Hey!" he yells.

BANG!

Bloody Nathan punches Brad in the armpit, causing him to fall to the ground. Then, bloody Brad instantly jumps us and kicks Nathan where he shouldn't have and he falls onto the ground.

"C'MON, NATHAN!" Matt yells loudly.

Uriah glares at him, then joins in. Nathan gets up, then leaps to the lights above him. Brad looks up and then leaps with him. They both hold onto the steel bars of the lights.

Uriah turns to Four. Uriah asks, "Has this ever happened before?"

Four shakes his head, "Not to my knowledge. I've only been training for three years, I've never seen anything like it."

Uriah nods. "Shocking."

Four raises his left eyebrow, then scowls in our direction.

Boom!

Nathan lands on the other light beside him, while Brad is swinging from the light. Nathan kicks Brad to the ground, then he jumps off. They both punch each other in the face, and both get hit. Nathan gains a black eye, while Brad bleeds from the lip.

Four checks his watch. "This has gone on for over 15 minutes. This is shocking."

Matt yawns from behind me. I turn around.

"This is normal," Matt says, "Ironically, but fights never last THIS long."

I nod.

"I TOLD YOU NATHAN IS CREEPY!" Uriah protests while Four shakes his head.

I look over at Nathan. Nathan walks backwards while Brad looks forward. Nathan walks with a slight limp, while Brad's nose is bleeding everywhere. Nathan flips Brad then jumps on top of him. Brad flips him over, causing Nathan's leg to get swollen. Nathan can no longer use his right leg. He brushes his index finger over his fresh snake tattoo. Then he resumes back to fighting. Brad's left arm is stationed in one place. Nathan must've twisted it.

Four walks out of the room. I don't know why. Maybe to check on David and Daniel.

Nathan and Brad just stand there for a few minutes. Then, Nathan swings on Brad's arm and Brad pushes him to the ground. Nathan stains Brad's vampire skin scarlet, causing Brad to scowl and launch at Nathan. He punches Nathan right in the Adam's apple and succeeds. Nathan winces and elbows Brad right in the eye. Brad gains a sudden black eye.

Brad collapses. "C'mon, flying pig. Get up and get me."

Nathan crawls towards him. Brad kicks him in the face and he flies out of the rink. Nathan tries to get up, but Uriah stops him.

"STOP!" Uriah roars.

Nathan tries to get up. He hops on his left leg. Uriah shakes his head. Nathan swears quietly. Matt gulps most of the remaining air in the room. I finally take a look at Nathan's injuries. His neck and legs are extremely swollen, his arms severely bruised.

"If you walk, you will hurt yourself more," Uriah warns.

Nathan's shakes his head. "I'm good."

Everyone else starts talking, except for Matt and I, who remain quiet.

"You remind me of my brother," Uriah whispers, "He is stubborn and persistent."

"Zeke?" Nathan asks.

"Yea..." Uriah starts uncomfortably, "Zeke."

"Abel, Kat, take Nathan and Brad to the infirmary," Uriah continues.

I guide Nathan while Abel guides Brad. Brad is a lot quicker than Nathan. I hear stomps from down the hall. I feel a warm hand pressing against me and Nathan. I look behind me. It's Uriah. He presses his finger to his lips.

As soon as we get to the infirmary, Uriah takes Brad and says to Abel, "You're free to go."

Abel leaves. Uriah drops Brad off on one side of the infirmary.

As soon as he gets back he says, "Kat, I need some help with Nathan here. He's severely injured."

"Uriah, you better be kidding me," Nathan mutters, "I do not need to go to the infirmary."

"Go," he commands.

Nathan starts to hop back to the training room, but Uriah lifts him up and carries him to the infirmary. Uriah starts to walk back. I linger for a while.

"Don't tell anyone about this," Nathan asks, then he dozes off.

I nod and briskly walk back to the training room. Matt and Sage both walk to the rink. Sage presses on the bridge of his glasses to keep them secure.

"Need some contacts?" Uriah asks.

Sage throws it off his face. Matt makes the first move. Matt punches Sage. Sage blocks it. Sage kicks Matt. Matt blocks it. This happens for about a minute, before Matt punches Sage and hits. Then Sage knees Matt in the hip. The fight lasts about five minutes, before Sage falls to the ground. Matt walks Sage to the infirmary.

The fourth fight is about to start. Four walks back into the training room.

"Fight Nathan/Brad finally ended?" Four asks in disbelief.

"I stopped it after 20 minutes," Uriah replies with exhaustion.

Four sighs. "I would've done it, too."

"TOM AND ABEL!" Uriah roars.

Tom and Abel step onto the fighting rink. I don't know either of them and I tune the fight out completely. All I know is Tom crushing Abel. Andrew takes Abel to the infirmary. Matt still hasn't returned.

"DAVE AND KAT!" Four roars.

I walk up to the fighting rink. I'm against this broad, muscular guy, who is more than a foot taller than me. Dave makes the first move. He punches me. I kick him in the arm... With my shoes on... I do a flip in the air and kick him and miss. He punches me and misses. I can't reach the lightbulb. I climb on top of Dave, but he pins me down to the ground in the process. I feel like giving up, but I know Tobias and Mom would be mad... Or Mom would, not sure about Tobias. He would probably scream for me to get out of the fight, to let them win. But, that gives me motivation. I suddenly cling onto Dave's wrist and swing onto a pole.

"OH NO!" Uriah yells from in front of us, while Four just shakes his head.

I punch Dave in the ear, causing it to bleed, Dave tries to punch me but he unfortunately misses. Dave does a flip and kicks me off in an instant. I fall down on my knees. As soon as I get up, Dave smashes me down with his massive body. I look at my newly inflated leg. I feel a few bones shatter underneath me.

"You better be kidding me," Four mutters under his breath.

Then, his eyes land on Dave. I try and punch Dave, but fail AGAIN. He then elbows me in the hip and tries to flip me over, but I run Dave's body into the pole I just clung onto. I kick him in the place multiple times, making him groan. I then climb onto his head and jump onto the lightbulb above me. I kick my shoes off on Dave. He is so tall, he starts to punch me through the crevices in the collection of swinging lights.

"Again?" Matt asks quietly as he secretly enters the room.

I hop from light to light, as Dave tries to punch me. He grabs my foot from above me and yanks me down to the ground. I jump up and then pin Dave to the pole for the second time. I punch him in the other ear. Now, both ears are bleeding. He acts like he has given up. Then, he runs me into the ground again. I instantly hop onto my feet but then he pushes me back onto the ground. He punches me: once, twice, three times, four times, and even more. He punches me over 20 times. I try and kick him with my balloon leg and fail. I feel blood trickling down from my nose to my mouth and chin. I try and punch him in the ear again, with me failing for the final time. He lifts me up and drops. My world is hazy as I crawl over to the edge of the rink and lift myself up on my arms to kick Dave in the face. He jumps on me, making my eyes more hazy then before. Then, my world went black.
