Chapter 18

(Pictures of dresses are in the A/N)

The four girls barely had time to think about what had just happened before the ringing of bells could suddenly be heard, signalling the turn of the hour.

"It's 8pm already?! We need to get back home!" Abir exclaimed hurriedly, putting away her phone and looking around the empty street.

Alice sighed anxiously, "Our parents are going to be so worried... do you think the police told them about...?"

"The blood? Probably." Oliwia muttered in annoyance.

"Okay, let's just get home and forget about all of this. It will just feel like a bad dream by tomorrow!" Mahnoor smiled, trying to cheer her friends up as she led them down the street and towards their houses.

It didn't take long for them to reach their houses and they were soon safe and sound within their bedrooms, hoping that tomorrow might be a calmer day.

However hard they hoped, it didn't work. How could they expect it to? Nothing had been the same since that day. That one Wednesday night that had changed everything. That one girl that had changed everything.

And now she was coming back to haunt them.

The news was sudden, not one of them had expected it. So they did what most teenagers would do in that situation, they rushed to their phones and began texting each other in an anxious flurry.

AliceBirdy 🐦: Did you guys hear the news?

Mahnoorch✨: Yep! Are you going to go?

Abir🦄: We have to! It's her funeral after all- The most important day of her life, well death 💀

Liv🥔: Ugh... But I want to sleep!

Mahnoorch✨: Same! But it's gonna look suspicious if we don't go

AliceBirdy🐦: Alright, I think my family's about to leave, I'll see you there okay?

Abir🦄: Bye!

Liv🥔: Have fun!

Abir🦄: Hey! You're coming too!

Liv🥔: Aww...

Mahnoorch✨: This is going to be so awkward and, more importantly, what am I going to wear?!

Liv🥔: Nothing!

Mahnoorch✨: Umm... no. See you later, It's time to go be fashionably late!

Liv🥔: Take some pictures and show me in school.. enjoy!

Abir🦄: You.are.coming!

Mahnoorch✨: She is? If she is I'm not!

Liv🥔: Ugh I'm coming only for food!

Mahnoorch✨: WHAT SHOULD I WEAR?!

Abir🦄: Black obviously 🙄

Liv🥔: SPARKLY BLACK ✨

Mahnoorch✨: See you there children!

Abir🦄: Be safe and COME!!!!!!!!

They were soon at the church all dressed in black.

Alice wearing a black feathery dress that almost made her seem like a bird.
"I wore this to Mr Birdys funeral" She explained solemnly.

Oliwia wearing a simple plain hoodie dress and blood red trainers underneath.

Mahnoor looking the prettiest of them all (Or at least she believed she looked the prettiest) wearing her sparkly black dress, just like she'd promised.

Abir wearing black trousers and a white shirt, very similar to her school uniform.

"Abir... are you wearing your school uniform?" Oliwia asked skeptically.

Abir blushed and scowled at Oliwia, "Hey! I dont have any other clothes!"

Oliwia rolled her eyes and grabbed Abir's arm dragging her towards St Andrew Cathedral as their parents followed them.

St. Andrew's cathedral was beautiful and breathtaking but what was more shocking than the place itself was the fact that only the first four pews of the church were occupied. Other than those few clusters of people, the large cathedral was just about empty.

"Let's sit at the back!" Alice's mum says and the rest of the parents nod.

"Come on girls" Mahnoor's mum whispered and turned to leave.

"Yeah, we should try and remain conspicuous... which will be very hard for you Alice!" Mahnoor added as she grabbed Alice and pulled her to the back row of seats.

Oliwia and Abir followed after them and were just about to sit down next to their friends when a firm hand suddenly latched onto Abir's arm.

Abir spun around in surprise, turning to face a red haired woman with puffy green eyes.

"Oh! You came! Fiona would be so happy to see you..." She whispered sadly as she leaned in to hug Mahnoor.

Mahnoor stepped back and stared in confusion at the woman, "Mrs...Mrs Filipowski? I'm so sorry for your loss."

"It's Ms Fillipowski" she corrected  smiling softly at the four girls. "Were you about to sit at the back? I just talked to your parents. Come with me! Fiona would've wanted her best friends to sit at the front... so you can be close to her..."

The woman dabbed slowly at her eyes then began to walk up to the front, gesturing for the girls to follow her.

Alice, Oliwia and Abir stared at Mahnoor, unsure of what to do.

"What are you looking at me for?" Mahnoor asked as she stepped back from her friends.

"Well... Fiona was your friend... once upon a time." Abir shrugged as she glanced at Fiona's mum as she sat down at the front.

Mahnoor sighed, "Once upon a time. Not any more...Look, let's just go and sit with her, we should stay on her good side at least for now."

The four girls hurried to the front leaving their parents behind and quickly sat next to Ms Filipowski, who smiled at them gratefully.

They looked around and saw that a few teachers from school were there, but none of the members of the student body had made an appearance.

The girls found it weird, that someone who lived for popularity was all alone as she lay on her death bed. All those people that worshipped Fiona as their queen were nowhere to be seen on her funeral.

As if she heard their thought the red headed woman spoke "Not many people have been invited, wouldn't want the news reporters to crash this funeral! I only invited Fiona's closest friends" as she finished she was on the edge of tears again.

If she really wanted Fiona's closest friends to be there, then why didn't she invite her gang of fake friends?

Right as the ceremony was about to begin, the doors of the church snapped open and some girls walked through.

"Ehm guys look" Oliwia said pointing towards the back.

"What are they doing here?!" Alice and Abir both shouted at the same time.

"And more importantly why are they so late?" Mahnoor asked "They can't be fashionably late! They don't have any sense of fashion, only I can be fashionably late"

There standing at the back where FF's actual 'friends'. Looks like some of them had actually decided to show up to her funeral.

"I'll go and say hi to them" Abir said as she tried to stand up, but Alice immediately pulled her back down.

"No you idiot! Simply hide from them" Alice spoke as the other two girls simply nodded.

"They actually aren't that bad..." Abir tried to say but she was cut off by the priest who began the ceremony.

The moment the priest began speaking, Suzanne Fillipowski started crying, her shoulders heaving as she wept.

Few moments later Suzanne Filipowski replaced the priest and started giving her speech.

"My darling little girl Fiona! I cannot believe that she has been taken away from us after only fifteen years on this earth. It is much too short a time, but they have been the most precious.

When you were born, you were so tiny – I couldn't believe my eyes. You had a shock of red hair and a cheeky face. You quickly gained weight, though, and after a couple of days in the hospital I was allowed to take you home. Me and tour dad wanted you to live a long and happy life. We always focused on our time together and treasured every moment. Until that moment..

From the time Fiona was a little girl, she brought joy and laughter into our lives and the lives of others. When she was little, I called her my 'cheeky monkey'. As soon as our backs were turned, she was up to something. But you couldn't get angry with her for too long as she would always give you one of those cheeky grins and say, "Oh Mummy, I'm sorry".

Fiona grew into a charming little girl who was outgoing and affectionate. She absolutely adored school and made lots of friends. I loved her so much.."
She couldn't manage to get more than that out before she burst into tears.

Filippa ran up to her hugging her and leading back to her place.

"It's okay Mum" she kept whispering until another person stood up waiting to give a speech.

Four girls were busy talking and using their phones than listening to the speeches. As they looked at the person talking they got quiet and stared at him trying to listen to at least few words he said.

"This poor girl was like a daughter to me.." Ikbal looked around for a moment before he finished his short speech and disappeared in the crowd.

"Mahnoor your turn" Ms Filipowski said looking at the girl with hope.

Mahnoor slowly got up and walked up wasting her time on the way.

"Umm.." she looked at her friends hoping one of them will help, unfortunately this didn't happen so she had to carry on.

"Fiona was such a lovely friend.. Alice carry on!!!!!"

To this she just got an awkward silence from everyone. Mahnoor quickly thought something on the spot and began her award winning speech.

"...Alright... here goes nothing... Fiona Filipowski was my best friend. Ours was an epic friendship, and I won't be able to get more than a sentence into it without disappearing into a puddle of tears. Fiona knew. Fiona knows. I will not tell you our friendship story, because like all real friendship stories, it will die with us. As it should. I can't talk about the story of our friendship, so I will talk about math. I am not a mathematician, but I know this. There is an infinite between 0 and 1. There's 0.1 and 0.12 and 0.112 and an infinite collection of others. Of course there is a bigger infinite set of numbers between 0 and 2, or between 0 and a million. Some infinities are bigger than other infinities. A writer we used to like taught us that. There are days, many days of them, when I resent the size of my unbounded set. I want more numbers than I'm likely to get, and God, I want more numbers for Fiona Filipowski than she got. But, Fiona, my friend, I cannot tell you how thankful I am for our little infinity. I wouldn't trade it for the world. You gave me a forever within the numbered days, and I'm grateful"

Mahnoor waited for the applauses as she started crying ruining her cheap mascara she decided to wear to this stupid funeral.

She sat back down and tried to get rid of her smudged mascara on her face.

"That was beautiful Mahnoor" Ms Filipowski wiped her own tears and passed Mahnoor a tissue.

"How did you come up with something so good? You made all these people cry!" Alice whispered as her friend sat down.

"These people clearly haven't read The Fault In Our Stars" Mahnoor winked as she fixed her makeup.

"Abir? Oliwia? Any of you want to speak?" Ms Filipowski's voice interrupted the conversation Alice and Mahnoor were having

"Sure! This will be the best speech I will ever say" Oliwia got up smiling, making sure everything is recorded on her phone and stood in front of everyone.

"Hello Children! Oh I mean Good Afternoon everyone... Aren't we wasting our Christmas Eve crying at that little creature? Cheer up my little potatoes! We shouldn't be crying over Fiona! She wouldn't want us to cry, right? I guess she wouldn't even want me here.. Oh well She was such a wonderful, creative, friendly and helpful person. I enjoyed stalking her everyday...ohh no.. walking with her everyday! Yes that's what I wanted to say! I guess i wasted enough time on saying quite good things so now I can just say Good you are de-" she stops and looks at her mum for a second and carries on "Thanks for listening! By the way all Potato donations come to me..." She sits back smiling

"Liv that was terrible." Abir whispers.

"Beautiful you meant? Thanks" Oliwia takes her phone and posts everything on snapchat.

A few other people followed with their speeches until it got to Fiona's  friends.

"...and we believe our friend, Fiona, was brutally murdered by none other than some people who are present here today. Please help us get justice for Fiona! #JusticeForFiona!" Maddie shouted emotionally as she pointed with anger at the four girls sat at the front row.

A few guests began mumbling under their breath the words- Justice for Fiona.

Mrs Filipowski finally dried her tears and looked up at Fiona's friends.

"How dare you? These girls were Fiona's best and closest friends! Who are you to say that they don't belong here? In fact, they are the only people who truly belong here, for they know more about Fiona then any of us... they probably know more about her than me."

The hysterical lady soon began crying once more and Fiona's friends walked sullenly back to their seats, embarrassed looks on their faces.

The speeches were over, goodbyes and farewells had been said, it was now time to put Fiona in the ground, burying her along with her many secrets.

Oliwia stopped snapchatting for a moment as the ding of a notification rang out-

#JusticeForFiona is trending on twitter!
