CHAPTER 22

    SAMMYS POV

"Don't get lost!" I heard Sam's voice call after me, and I shook my head at her words with a small chuckle.

God, she looked good tonight. It was hard taking my eyes off her, yeah, she's my so-called enemy and all but that doesn't mean I can't think she's attractive.

I had to go get some punch to clear my thoughts, either I probably would have said some things I probably shouldn't say to Sam.

Being too nice and whatnot.

I walk over to the table set in the corner with students coming and going along it, picking up clear cups to pour the liquid inside. I stood at the end as I grabbed a cup, reaching for the spoon from the bowl to fill my cup with the red punch.

Suddenly my ears perked up at the voices beside me, signaling to me it was Travis and one of his friends. I spared a few hidden glances toward them as they were laughing abruptly about who knows what.

"Fuck that, she sounds terrible." His friend patted the shoulder of Travis, making him let out a scoff.

"You're telling me? She comes here looking like a slut with that dress she has on, yet she wouldn't put out whenever we were together." Travis continued, and I furrowed my brows at the conversation.

Odd conversation to be having out in public.

I purposely moved my cup to the side slowly as I continued listening until I heard a specific name come out of his mouth.

"Huh, never thought of Sam to be that way. Always figured she'd was more reserved, looks like she's trying to get your attention now, huh?" The random friend replied, and at this point, my blood was boiling.

Why? Because for one, how disrespectful can you be talking that way about a girl in public. For two, I've known Sam this long to know she's not a slut, and I know she absolutely despises this asshole because of this exact reason.

I balled my hand up as I breathed out my nose, trying to calm myself down. The blood inside me was heating my whole body up as I tried to contain my anger.

"Yeah, she sure is, and it's not gonna work. If I can't get into those pants of hers then what's the point?" Travis let a dark chuckle out, and that was the final straw.

I snapped my head in their direction, "What the fuck is wrong with you two?" I spat, turning the attention onto me with amused looks.

"Oh, there's Sammy. He's one of the guys she's been toying around with lately." Travis shook his head slightly as he inspected me, noticing he was getting arise out of me.

"God, get a life, Travis. It's pretty fucking sad you're still turning everything back on Sam." I say with heat creeping up onto my neck and face. I let no emotion be shown to him, but he knew I was angry.

"Me? Have you seen her?" He raised his eyebrows, motioning his head over in her direction. "She was just flirting up a storm with you before you came over here."

"Ah, so you were watching her? I mean, if she was trying to get your attention it sure is working, isn't it?" Sarcasm laced my voice, but I was keeping my composure as calm as can be. This must have switched something inside him because he was now the one with a scowl on his face.

"I would watch your mouth if I were you."

"Yeah? And if I don't?"

His cheeks flushed red as his eyes darkened, and I just smiled at him in satisfaction before I saw a sudden movement of his fist connecting with my jaw. Pain shot up through my jaw, but I wasn't letting that stop me.

Gasps were heard around us as we started to cause more attention, and I threw a fist back, locking into his jaw which made him stumble onto the table, knocking off cups along with the punch spilling.

A scowl was painted on his face as he started to rub the side of his cheek. He took a stride toward me, but I ended up grabbing the front of his shirt with my good hand and pushed him into the table with him falling along with everything else.

Crashes and bangs followed after him with him now lying on the ground. I stood above him as my breathing started to get more rapid, "Maybe you should be the one to watch your mouth." I spat, stepping backward until I felt a small body behind me.

I slowly turned around to be met with Sam. Her soft brown eyes looked up at me with concern as she was moving her attention from Travis to me.

"What the hell..." her voice was lower than usual, and finally the adrenaline I was feeling through my veins vanished.

I glanced around the room to notice the music stopped, and there was currently a teacher sprinting over to the scene. I closed my eyes shut as I sucked in a breath, already knowing what was coming.

Great.

This is not how I wanted my night to go.

The teacher ran to Travis and helped him up as he acted as if he was the victim.

"Mr. Sandars! We need you to leave immediately." She shouted, with the whole school circling around the scene. "We'll talk about your consequences on Monday at school, but for now, you're kicked out of the dance."

I opened my eyes, letting them land on Travis who was now giving me the look of satisfaction.

"Have fun at home, Sammy." Travis laughed, with a few others snickering at his comment.

It took all my power not to go knock his ass out again, but instead, I turned on my feet once more to walk out of the school gym.

The sounds of my footsteps were the only thing in the hallway as I approached the big doors to lead myself outside, but suddenly, another pair of footsteps were trailing behind me making me groan in annoyance.

"I get it, I'm in trouble, and am exiting the building now." I whipped around harshly thinking it was a teacher until I realized it was Sam instead.

My eyes softened as hers flickered around my face, and I let out a sigh.

"What?" I asked, still annoyed.

"Take me home." She demanded, making me furrow my brows.

"Huh?"

She grabbed onto my wrist and started to pull me toward the school doors, and I ended up following along until we were all the way out in the parking lot at my car, "I don't get it, why are you leaving?"

"Because you're going to tell me what the hell happened between the two of you."

This was going to be a way longer night than I originally had planned for.

"Sit." She demanded as she signaled to the edge of her bed.

I somehow managed to sneak into her house again, but she also had mentioned how her parents were out with friends so I was okay to come in through the front door.

Thankfully.

"Yes ma'am." I smiled innocently at her as she rolled her eyes.

She sat beside me as she held an ice pack in her hands, slowly raising it to my face, "Okay, this is probably going to be cold." She warned, but not in enough time because as she did so, she placed the ice pack against my cheek making me suck in a breath through my teeth.

"Okay, ow?" I grabbed ahold of the ice pack from her hands and now was pressing it against my cheek.

"Wish I could say you didn't deserve it." She shrugged, amusement dancing in her brown eyes.

"Okay now, I just stuck up for you, so be nice to me."

Her smile faded as I said that before she leaned forward to get a better look at me, "Wait, is that why you two fought?"

I shrugged, "I guess so, yeah."

"What did he say?" She was curious now as she started to fidget with her fingers.

"He...was just talking very badly about you, so I spoke up, and one thing led to another." I took the ice pack away for a short moment as I started to feel my jaw, it aching in pain at this point, "And damn, did he punch me."

"Can you tell me what he exactly said?"

I froze for a moment, remembering the words he was saying, and debated if it be good or not to admit the horrible things he said. My eyes flicker to hers, giving her a look of sympathy.

"He said things about how you, um, were being a slut and flirting...but you're definitely not." I placed my hand on her thigh, without thinking because all I was trying to do was comfort her.

Her bare skin was soft, and it made me want to keep my hands resting on her leg, but instead, I quickly pulled away once I felt her tense at my touch. "Um, yeah. He was saying things how you didn't give in." I use my fingers as quotation marks.

She rolled her eyes, taking a long breath, "I hate him, this is the exact reason why I broke up with him."

Her eyes fell to her lap, and it took all my strength not to pull her into a hug. Not to just, touch her and rub my thumb against her soft, pale skin.

"He may have thrown the first punch, but I definitely wanted it. I wanted to kick his ass because of the way he spoke of you." I smiled at her, and her eyes raised to mine, smiling right back.

"Thanks, Sammy, I guess you're kinda nice sometimes." She chuckled, and I rolled my eyes.

"When people call you things that aren't true then yeah, I'm gonna be nice because only I can make fun of you."

"Yeah? Is that how that works?" She raised her eyebrows with a small giggle which warmed my heart and made all the bad thoughts wash away.

I don't understand what's been happening lately, but I oddly don't mind being around her anymore.

It's kinda...nice?

"Yeah, I hate you and all, but I don't hate you enough for assholes like him to call you a slut." I teased, making her roll her eyes with them landing back on me.

I smiled once more and placed the ice pack back onto my cheek with my eyes falling to the floor.

"Huh, Sammy Sandars has a heart, that's weird?" She teased back before standing up on her feet to walk over to her mirror.

She started to take out the flowers from her hair, and I watched every move as she let her hair fall past her shoulders.

"Ha, very funny Ryder."

She continued to take off her jewelry before swirling back to me.

"I know, I'm a pretty funny gal." She added, making me roll my eyes as I flopped my back down onto my back.

After a short moment of silence, the bed dipped beside me with Sam flopping onto her back beside me with her hair sprawling around her head perfectly. She turned her head toward me before letting a long sigh out.

"You okay?" She asked.

Our arms were touching which set an electric feeling up my arm and through my body, and I glanced toward her as her eyes were inspecting me with curiosity.

"Yeah, I'm good. My face hurts, but I did go through the whole night with a broken hand when you decided to break it so..." I tried to keep a straight face once she narrowed her brown eyes at me.

"Are you ever gonna let me live that down?"

"No."

"Figured so."

I chuckled as she laughed, but my facial expression soon faded as I got lost in her features.

Her face was perfectly round as her eyes were closed from laughing with them opening once more, revealing her beautiful brown eyes. I looked into her eyes as if I was trying to figure out who she was. Every day I spend with her, I want to know more.

She was almost a mystery to me, yet I knew more about her than most.

My eyes landed on her lips and they were perfectly shaped, and plump making me want to grab her face and pull her closer to do things I shouldn't.

At that moment.

I knew I was fucked.
