INTERVIEW
I worked on my paper finishing it halfway till the Sunday morning. I woke up just when the shrill ringing of my phone woke me up from my slumber. Lazily I reached for my phone on the nightstand beside my bed, I was in no mood of getting up and this alarm was getting me irritated. But wait a minute... since when did I start setting alarm on my phone?
I sat up in bed as the realization hit me. Since yesterday, I reminded myself. I had to get ready to leave for the office of Amiable. Valarie had called me up the previous night asking me to be ready by eight so that I'd be in time for the interview that was quite far from where I lived in London. I stopped my alarm and tore off the covers from me rushing towards the bathroom. Quickly brushing my teeth I turned the shower and jumped in to clean myself up. I didn't waste the time I had in shower, but utilized it to think what I was going to wear. Was it a casual meeting? Or was it going to be a professional interview?
I got out with a towel wrapped around me and hurried to my closet. Rummaging through all that I had, I picked out a black colored sweater and a pair of ink blue skinny jeans. I was sort of attached to the sweater as it was the last gift my Nan ever gave me before she passed away. I walked over to the bed with my black converse and ankle length socks. I brushed my damp hair till they were not tangled anymore and pulled out my cream colored sling. The day was neither too hot nor too cold. But to be honest the weather is never really certain here in London. The sun was out this moment but the cold air from the night hadn't really warmed up yet. Hence I felt the need to really wear the sweater. I considered taking my coat with me, in case it would start raining and the air would get all the more chilled.
But then again, there was a cab coming for me and I really needn't worry about what it was going to be outside since I'd be in the warmth anyway. Hence, I decided against it. I waited patiently for the cab to arrive but it just was taking quite a lot time. It was half an hour stale and I was beginning to wonder if they had canceled up on the interview. Or perhaps me, to say the least.
I considered calling Valarie up and also getting myself some morning coffee. I pulled out my phone from my sling that was draped across my shoulder, taking it off. Tapping at the screen I dialed Valarie's contact and made my way to the kitchen to make myself some coffee. The line connected, I could hear the rings but none answered. After a few rings my call went to the voice mail.
'Valarie Simpson seems to be busy at the time. Sorry for the discomfort, please leave the message.'
'Hey, this is Chastity Ericht. I, um, wanted to know if the interview was canceled. The cab isn't here yet. Should I take the bus? Please let me know incase.' I hung up.
I had just started to make my coffee when my phone rang. I snatched it from the counter and put it to my ear. 'Chastity,' came Valarie's voice. 'I am so sorry I forgot to send the cab. Anyway it's headed to your place and will be there anytime soon. Don't worry, you are not that late. It'll get you here by nine fifteen.'
'Okay,' I smiled.
'Oh, and I have given the driver your digits, he will ring up to you as soon as he gets there,' she informed.
'Yes, thank you.' And then the line went blank. A while later when I was just going to pour my coffee out, my phone rang again with the screen flashing at the unknown number.
I attended the call assuming it to be the driver and it was.
'Mam, I have been sent to pick you up for the interview? Is this Chastity Ericht?'
'Yes this is she,' I said brightly. 'I am headed out; just honk the horn when you see a girl in black sweater and cream purse.'
Leaving my coffee I went to my room and grabbed my sling. Throwing it over my shoulder once again I left my apartment locking it behind me. My hair had dried a bit but it still gave my head a chill when I walked out of the warm atmosphere.
There was only one black cab parked on the other side of the road in front of my building and hence he should've known that there was no need to honk the horn, but he still did and it made me smile. I hurried towards the cab crossing the road. As soon as I was at the car I grinned at the driver.
'Good morning,' I said in a perky voice. Everyone needs that.
He was a man with dark skin and a strong built. How did he end up being a driver when he was suitable for being a bodyguard?
'Good morning, mam,' he gave an appreciative nod.
I got into the car and settled myself shutting the door. 'I have a request,' I said as soon as my stomach was done complaining of being empty. 'Could you please stop by at one of the cafés? I am famished and really need to get something inside me to start me off.'
He gave a nod and drove off.
He stopped in front of the first café he saw, it being Starbucks. I hurried to it and luckily got to be the second one to place an order. There weren't many people, or should I say that a geeky girl and I were the only ones who needed their coffee so early in the morning. While we were still on the road to Amiable, Valarie called me up.
'I am on my way,' I said attending her. 'I had to stop by to get myself some coffee.'
'You are running late already,' Valarie warned. 'Ask Dave to stomp on it.'
'Uh, please speed up the meeting is about to get over,' I told the driver. He just gave a nod and did what he did best. 'We will be there shortly,' I informed Valarie.
'I hope.'
The next stop was Amiable, but I seriously had no time to stand there and admire the architecture as they did in the movies. I had to race myself to the reception.
The lady at the reception smiled warmly at me. 'How can I help?'
'I am here for the interview.'
I just had to say this and she pressed a button putting the receiver to her ear. A second later she put it down and said, 'The first door down right. Have a good day.'
'Thanks,' I smiled.
With my cup I headed off to the door she told me of. My hairs were all over the place and all I could do was run my fingers through them. I hated the wavy texture but I didn't want to damage them either. I just had to put up with them. They were pretty beautiful as everyone said but I just couldn't bring myself to like them the way others did. I wished my hair to be like of the girls that endorse shampoos and conditioners. But that is a long way.
I walked in through the heavy glass doors to what seemed like the press conference room. There was a table in the far end of the room holding five people, the men while Valarie stood at the distance. As soon as I barged in every eye in the room turned to me. I smiled at all of them despite some of their glares and bored expressions. 'I am so sorry I am late. Every one of us needs a kick start, I did too. Wouldn't want to be dead for you guys right?' I said to Valarie and all. I turned to face the boys then. Three pairs of eyes lit up while one was slightly alert and intrigued, that being Arthur whose lips were slightly upturned into a smile while Marcus irritably rolled his eyes.
I ignored him and turned my head to the boys grinning wide just as the three of them were. 'Hello!' I said. 'How are you all this morning?'
My eyes settled on Arthur's face which looked startled, if I was reading it right. His brow shot up to my question. He grinned.
'We are very well,' Blake answered for all with a smile. 'How are you?'
'I am alright,' I said. 'I'll be great as soon as this kicks in.' I rolled my eyes holding up my cup for them to see. Everyone laughed, save Marcus. I got it now why Arthur hated him so much. I couldn't imagine putting up with such guy either.
'What do you do?' Nolan asked, surprising me since I remembered clearly that I had informed them of that the day before.
I chuckled softly to myself finally realizing what that was for, it being a formal interview. I shrugged faintly running my hair through my winded hair, not wanting to look like a troll in front of the handsome guys. Especially when all the other girls in the room- and that include Valarie- were heavenly beautiful.
'I currently am a student at the London school of Literature and Arts, nothing really special. For the time being, I compose plays and musicals and direct them for the college but you never know. I believe in being positive.'
'Alright, you're dismissed,' Marcus said abruptly, making my brows knit in confusion. But I had just started on. I really felt like slapping him hard for his rudeness.
My wish was fulfilled soon when Arthur smacked his shoulder making all eyes go to him. Arthur turned his head to me as soon as Marcus turned his head to glare at him. Arthur smiled at me and I smiled back. 'Thank you, erm?'
'Chastity Ericht,' I said completing his sentence while rocking back and forth on my feet.
He smiled in acknowledgement. 'Chastity,' he repeated as if memorizing. 'We will get back to you soon.'
I smiled back and turned to Valarie who was leaning against the wall behind the chairs of my interviewers and gave me nice smile and thumbs up. I smiled at her and bobbed my head once. I looked down at the boys and smiled at them too before turning to smile at Arthur. I decided to leave Marcus out because he deserved that and I wanted to deliver my message to him, that being I didn't like him.
As I began backing away from them, I heard Nolan or perhaps Noah call my name. I turned to them biting the skin off my upper lip in slight confusion. I walked back to them.
'You might want to fill this form out,' Noah said. 'Just for the details so we can get in touch with you as soon as we decide.'
I grinned and approached the table. As I was filling the form asking my general details, from my peripheral vision, I saw Nolan shift a bit in his seat to be perched up on the edge of his chair. He leaned on o the table to get closer to me and whispered, 'I think you just got selected.'
'Really?' I whispered back. 'I thought I was on hold since I didn't get my golden ticket yet.'
Blake chuckled and so did the twins. Arthur's head did turn to us slightly but it didn't seem like he was listening or was even interested.
'He never spoke up for any of the girls we have auditioned so far,' Noah informed.
'I thought that was only because Marcus was being a jerk.'
'That he is,' Blake said rolling his eyes.
I smiled. I quickly filled out the details and bade them farewell before walking out. It didn't come to me until then that I was on hold to being someone's fake girlfriend. And the feeling of disgust returned. What had I done? Why did I even audition? This wasn't what I wanted. Was there still time to back out? Or was it too late?
'Chastity!'
I turned around to find Valarie sprinting towards me in her heels. I must say the woman had good control over her feet. I would never have been able to do that. Thank god I don't need heels. Even though I was a five-six, I looked small in front of her. She had a great height; I wondered what she needed the heels for.
I smiled at her through the confusion and dismay. I wasn't yet ready to hear the yes she was about to say. I wished for Arthur to have rejected me.
'You were great back there,' she complemented.
My smile fell down instantly. 'I am so sorry but I still can't decide in favor of this job.'
'Don't worry,' she assured walking me towards the door. 'You have time. Think it through. We wouldn't want you to do something you are not comfortable with.'
'And all the other girls are ready?'
'One yes and they will go all the way,' she said shaking her head in disgust. 'Some of them are brainless, most them are just after the fame.'
'Isn't that you want?'
She shook her head rolling her eyes as she smiled. 'That is what Marcus wants. The management is heartless. But we are not. The boys want you. The word is on Arthur now.'
I sighed heavily. I liked the boys. They were great. But was I really going to give up my ethics? Sure I needed couple of extra bucks but was it really that necessary?
'It's not a bad job, if you think about it,' Valarie said, stopping when we were at the door. I stopped too. Looking up to find her smiling at me I was about to say something but then I just forgot what it was.
'Nothing offensive will happen. That is my promise to you.' She looked outside the heavy glass double doors monogrammed with –A. 'Dave is outside in the car. He will drive you back. We will soon be in touch.'
I smiled at her before I stepped out of Amiable.
