INVITATIONS

Throwing my sling bag on my couch I headed towards my kitchen. The coffee that I had brewed for myself about an hour and a half ago still sat there in the kettle on the slab. I sighed and stood in front of it putting my hands on my on my waist. What do I do of this now? More importantly, what do I do of the mess I have created back at Amiable?

'Oh, Lord,' I mumbled to myself stomping my foot in annoyance.

The flat was dead silent and it was really annoying to be in such silence. I needed distraction. I opened the cabinet above me and pulled out the big box of cereal. I enjoyed the soft murmur with which the chunks tumbled down into the porcelain bowl. I decided to finish my paper and be free for the rest of the day. Walking over to the fridge I pulled out the carton of milk from it and returned to my bowl of cereal.

As I began pouring the milk in the bowl, I began reviewing the interview through my mind. Did I really make that good impression on him? I was unsure. I wasn't sure if he was really going to choose me. I mean there were about thirty or forty girls there in that room sitting in the chairs in front of them, most of them being models. Where were my chances? I mean honestly, I was pretty, I knew it because people told me that, but the ones sitting there were heavenly beautiful. And when we place that on the weighing scale- heavenly beauties weigh more. Everything about them was beautiful. Their hair, their height, and their figure- my stature was fine too, but that's the only thing I have in me. A nice figure. And they were all dressed in the best dresses ever that showed of their curves and slightly revealed their skins, they could carry heels, while I was there dressed in a black sweater, jeans and converse, not to mention the nest of my wavy hair.

There was no chance I was going to get this. And I should've been feeling good about it. Then why wasn't I? Was I really talked into by Valarie to do it? Or was it because the boys had been so nice to me? But could that be the only factor? Was I really in need of the couple of bucks I would be making?

Perhaps. I couldn't say exactly.

The milk over flowed from the bowl and pattered down on to the floor making me groan. Good job distracting yourself, Chast. I pulled out a mop from a drawer and threw it down on the puddle of milk. With my foot I moved the mop wiping the puddle off the floor. Picking up the mop I wiped the spilled milk off the slab too and hen washed it in the sink.

I slurped off the extra milk from the bowl so that the level of it was much below the brim. Then with the bowl in my hand I entered the living area. Snatching the remote from the couch I switched the TV on and placing the bowl on the little glass coffee table I left for my room to get my homework. There was a song playing on MTV and it was Taylor Swift on the screen. I turned the volume down, to the level it was soothing for me and not disturbing enough when I wrote, when I came back out of my room. As soon as I sat down on the couch I could hear the ringtone of my phone. But the voice wasn't loud enough or perhaps I was just imagining. Turning the TV off, I found the room to be silent again.

Yes, it definitely was my ears ringing.

Within six continuous hours of sitting I was writing the concluding line of my paper. I got up only when I was done. I switched the TV off and left for the kitchen with my empty bowl. After washing the bowl I was headed towards my room hen again I could hear the ring of my phone. It was coming from the couch and I found my sling sitting there. I sighed and snatched off the couch, wrenching my phone out of it.

It was Valarie. 'Chastity, this is Valarie Simpson. I have been trying to reach you but you weren't answering your calls.'

'Yeah sorry my phone was in my bag and I just couldn't hear it right.'

I could hear the laugh in her voice. 'Well, the boys want to meet up with you are you free right now?'

'Um, yeah I am,' I said, purely indecisive and nervous.

'Great! Meet the boys at the diner just down the road of your place? Will that be fine?'

I shrugged to myself. 'Yes, thank you. When do I leave?'

'About an hour?'

'Fine by me.'

'I'll let the guys know.' She added, 'oh and there will be some friends of theirs too, just so you know.'

I was quiet for a moment. Why would there be friends? Had I been selected already? Was Arthur really that impressed to have signed me? And that too of all the girls present there? Was he really that blind? But why did the boys want to meet me? Probably this was all a set up. Perhaps this was a fake date or something. But why would Valarie lie to me about the boys wanting to meet me?

'Chastity, are you there?' Valarie asked.

Blinking and coming back from my train of thoughts I replied, 'um, ye- yes. I- I am.'

'So should I let the boys know that you will meet them in about an hour's time?'

'Have I been selected already?' I managed to ask.

Valarie let out a laugh giving me a certain relief. 'Relax, Chastity. It's just a casual meet up with Blake, Noah and Nolan. They just want to hang out with you. Plus we wouldn't sign you without your own consent. The contract wouldn't allow us to do that.'

I smiled. Valarie literally was becoming my favorite person on the face of the earth. 'Thank you. Oh, and let the boys know I am damn too excited to meet them.'

She got my excitement and laughed. 'Alright, I will.'

After I hung up on her, I trotted over to my room to decide my attire. The worst decision that a woman ever has to make is what to wear. The amount of pressure this question exerts on her is far beyond any pressure she ever comes across in her life. She should wear something in accordance with the situation, she has to look perfect and beautiful, the attire should bring out her personality, are such points that a female has to keep in mind before she selects a dress to wear. Often the way she clad herself also speaks her mind out. It's easy to read a woman on the basis of her attire.

I was in the mood of having fun and also the meet with the boys was going to be a casual hang out so I decided to wear my deep blue and pink checkered shirt with black jeans and my converse. Not to forget it was cold outside, it hadn't rained but the sun hadn't been out all morning so it was cold and most likely to rain by the night. I had to carry my trench coat along to keep myself warm. I decided to leave my hair down and to just put on a beanie.

The bell to my apartment rang and I headed to attend whoever it was at the door. I took my phone with me, in case there were any updates from Valarie. I opened the door to find Sasha Morgenstern, my collage mate standing at the door with an exuberant smile. My mood lit up instantly, not that I was dull or something, but it was just the vibe she brought with her got to me. I looked down at her petite figure- some three inches shorter than mine- and finally saw the packets she was holding in her hand.

'Guess, what I got today at the market?' she said, waking past me through the door straight to the couch.

Sasha was my friend from the university. I liked the way her auburn hair framed her heart shaped face and her deep blue eyes were just a bonus to her looks. Her pixie framed body was so fragile that it was almost hard to believe that she was a black belt at martial arts. She looked fit to be a ballerina.

'We are having a movie marathon,' she said, settling down beside the coffee table and emptying the packet. She pulled out two jumbo packets of chips and a jumbo bottle of coke. There were also a bunch of movies and by the cover of them I guessed that either were love stories or were Disney movies.

She watched me walk up to her slowly with my arms helplessly by my side. Her smile came down flat on her face and brows furrowed over her nose. Just when she was going to say something, my phone began ringing all over again.

There wasn't a name to the digits flashing cross my screen. Reluctantly, I attended the call. Confused, Sasha just stared at me blankly. But then she just resumed her work of setting things right on the table. By that I mean in proper order.

'Hi, Chastity.' I could literally imagine Blake grinning from ear to ear on the other side of the line.

'Oh, Blake, Hello. How are you?' Being a fan of The Black Illusions, Sasha's ears stood up and her head turned to look in my direction. I just stared back at her with a poker face.

'Damn too excited to meet you.' He chuckled softly.

Sasha shrugged, probably assuming that it was some other guy by the same name, and got up from the carpeted floor to head over to the kitchen. I moved my feet to plop on the couch.

I chuckled too as I realized those were the words I had spoken to Valarie a short minutes ago. 'I bet no talks are secret in your industry.'

He laughed. 'You will get accustomed to it. Don't worry too much.'

'Where did-'

'I get your digits from?'

I nodded like an idiot as if he could really see me. 'Y-yes,' I strutted finally.

'Well, if you recall, we made you fill a form out this morning.'

He really didn't have to complete the sentence for me to understand. Being a smart girl I understood halfway through. 'Smart,' I stated.

'And handsome,' he added with a chuckle.

I giggled. I didn't really feel like I was speaking to a celebrity. Where was the ego? Did they really have to be so rooted? He was talking so casually. Like we hadn't just met yesterday, but had known each other since ages. Sasha returned with two glasses and a bowl and set them on the table. I watched her carefully as she emptied the entire packet of chips into that bowl and then unscrewed the cap of the bottle of coke.

'So,' I said to Blake. 'What brought tonight's plan up?'

I imagined him shrug as he spoke, 'nothing. It's just that, Arthur has got the word and who knows if you'd take the job or not? So we just wanted to meet for the last time. You know, hang out as mates.'

I smiled. Sasha held the glass full of black liquid, with tiny golden bubbles running around in the glass and also sticking to the wall of it, out to me. I mouthed her thanks and took the glass. 'Impressive. Can I bring along a friend?'

Sasha almost choked up on her coke before looking at me confused. She gave me a look that asked, who is it?

A friend, I mouthed. I didn't want to reveal it to her yet. It'll be a good surprise for her.

'We don't mind,' he said. 'Is she a fan.'

'The craziest one you will ever meet,' I smiled to myself. I did realize that of all the three boys I have known from the band, Blake is the more driven by the fans. Probably he enjoyed his stardom most.

'I'd love to meet her.'

'Great, I'll bring her along.'

'We'll be waiting for you guys there.'

And then the line disconnected. I nearly spilled my never once sipped cola on myself when Sasha hit me with her arm. 'Ow, what was that for?'

'The mess you just created. Whom are you trying to set me up with?' she hissed through her teeth, her brows literally knit over her nose.

I laughed. 'It's just a casual meet silly. Don't worry. They are just friends. You'll thank me later. Plus his name is Blake; I thought you liked that name.'

'I don't like the name. I am in love with the guy in the band. I will marry him someday.' I laughed harder but she continued anyway, 'This guy is not him.'

'He is very similar to him.' You can't even imagine, I wanted to add.

She narrowed her eyes at me before rolling them. 'I am not going.'

'Oh, come on, Sasha. I promised him already.'

'Even better. You will at least learn to ask others before including them in a plan without their consent.'

I frowned at her. 'Don't be such a spoil sport. It'll be fun! And who knows he'll be better than your Blake.'

She glared at me. 'None is better than Blake.'

I laughed. 'Just saying, so you won't miss the chance.'

'And what about the movie marathon we were about to have?'

'It can wait till tomorrow can't it? Plus this is going to be the last time Blake and I meet. Who knows we'll ever be able to meet again or not?'

She eyed me suspiciously. 'Who is this Blake? And how come the name never before tumbled from your mouth?'

Great job keeping secrets, Chastity. I kept my head. I didn't want her to further suspect something. 'A childhood friend. We weren't in contact for a long time. He called me up just yesterday.'

She raised a brow at me and gave a long stare. I dint blink once but acted innocent. She sighed, giving up after a short while. 'Okay, whatever.'
