Chapter 12
Heather's P.O.V.
I saw Hiccup walking through the village, looking dazed. He was probably wondering if he'd seen "Plasma" from anywhere. I wonder if he recognized her as Tawny. "Hey, Hiccup," I greeted, walking up to him.
"Hi, Heather," he says, not breaking stride as I join him.
"So, notice anything about Plasma?" I ask.
"Was I supposed to?" he counters.
"I'd think you would. She looks an awful lot like a daughter we lost about 15 years ago...," I hint before walking toward the Great Hall. I saw the girl when she was unconscious, and instantly recognized her. She hadn't changed much in these last 15 years, although she was much more beautiful and mature. I had Shayla find out her name, wondering if Berk had given her a different name than her father. "Thork, Leize. Meet me in the cave," I order as I pass the Person of the Wings and Blacksmith. The men exchange a glance before running off to gather the others. I mount Windshear and she flies me to the back of the mountain, landing in the cave we had meetings in. A few minutes later, I was joined by the other People of the Wings. "Friends, my fellow villagers," I started, earning their attention, "Tawny has returned to us." I was met with shocked gasps.
"Where?"
"Does Hiccup know?"
"Is she okay?"
"Does she remember us?"
They pounded me with questions, my heart dropping as I thought of the answers. "She is in Shayla's hut, recovering from being half-starved, dehydrated, and sunburned. Hiccup does not know; he doesn't recognize her, as far as I can tell. Far from okay, goes by the name of Plasma, and does not remember us," my words were greeted by more gasps, filled with sorrow and longing.
"We have to tell them!" Thunder shouted from the back of the group.
"No! Do you know how mad Hiccup will be?! He'll chase her off the island before she can realize who he is!" Leize snapped.
"But they need to be reunited! Hiccup's been miserable for the last 15 years!" Thork countered.
"Yeah, he lost his wife, and then became unbearable when those stupid, heartless Berkians took his youngest daughter!" Skyla backed them up.
"Everyone calm down!" I shout over the arguing voices. They all stopped and looked at me. "I want to tell them as much as any of you. But we can't. You know how hard Hiccup is on himself for letting his old village get a hold of Tawny. If we told him she's back, who knows what he'll do." They exchanged glances before murmuring in agreement. "And even worse, think about how scarred Tawny will be, when she hears that she was kidnapped to kill dragons, when she has her father's love for them. She might have a break down. You all must understand that by keeping this from them, we are protecting them. I don't think anyone here would want Tawny to be banished after we just got her back."
"Tawny was my best friend," a new Person of the Wings, Niki, said as she pushed her way to the front, "And I can't stand the fact that she doesn't know how close she is to finding her father. But I also don't want to have to go through losing her again. I vote we don't tell them." I hold up a finger to make a tally.
"She was like a second daughter to me. Her father is one of my closest friends, often helping me in the forge," Leize speaks up, "I still have the first ax he helped me make. Tawny was the only thing that kept me going when my daughter told me she didn't want to be a blacksmith. Both have done so much for me, despite how young she was when she was taken. I don't want Hiccup to over react and get rid of the thing that we shared a greater common love for. You have yourself another vote for silence." I put up another finger.
I continue to keep the tally as more and more people make arguments about reasons why we should and shouldn't tell Hiccup who was on his island. Finally, we landed on the last of the People of the Wings. Avechi. Everyone knew how much she wanted her father to bring Tawny back, and get her family reunited...what know one could predict was her vote.
"I visited Tawny twice, once alone and once with Astrid. I don't know if she would recognize us if we were to speak to her now--due to how Stoick must have treated her, he must have damaged her memory or something. But I've been waiting forever to get my sister back. Now that she's here, I want nothing more than for my father to recognize her, or her to recognize him. But seeing as how that's not going to happen, I don't want to test his new-found temper. The last vote is for silence."
"Then it's settled," I announce, "We don't tell either of them who the other is. Now who is on Night Patrol?" Thunder, Skyla, Thork, and Leize raise their hands. I nod to the mouth of the cave, "Why don't you keep an eye on the West beach. If Tawny came alone, Berk might not be far behind her." They nod before going to their dragons and flying off.
Hiccup's P.O.V.
"Hiccup!" I turned to see Heather jogging up to me. "I know you usually take the mornings to meditate with Sage, but I was thinking...what if you have Plasma join you?" I furrowed my eyebrows.
"I think we should let her rest in the morning," I tell her.
"And I think you should meditate with her," she hisses.
"Uh...o-okay. I'll ask her," I say nervously as I see the look in her eye. She smiles before walking off. She knew how to intimidate me. "Hey, Heather! I just asked her and she said no!" I called and Heather paused before swinging her ax at me. I rolled to the side as it stabbed the dirt. "Not cool!" I shout.
"You need to share that cliff with someone!" she said before continuing to the Meade Hall, leaving her ax in its place.
"I'm not sharing that cliff, it's our cliff!" I said to Sage, looking at the clouds with my hand on my hip. Suddenly, a soft breeze blew passed me, directed to Shyla's hut. I felt her hand on my back and was suddenly back to when she was here. "Sage are you trying to tell me something?" I ask before the wind blew again, still toward Shayla's hut.
"Meditate with her..." the whispered voice trailed off on the wind as it blew passed my ear. "Ask her about her parents."
"I don't think she's in any condition to be interrogated," I murmur.
"Ask her, Hiccup. Ask her," the voice was growing louder.
"Fine but I'm not sharing the cliff," I grumble before a cold gust pressed against my back.
"Hiccup!" the voice roared in my ear.
"Okay! Okay! For pete's sake!" I said in exasperation before walking to the hut. Plasma was sitting up in the bed, knees pulled to her chest as she looked at the dragons around the village through the window. "Scared of 'em?" I ask, making her head snap toward me.
"Uh...I'm not sure," she says uncertainly, looking back out the window, "They don't seem to be attacking anyone, but every other time I've come across one, it's tried to kill me."
"Well they know they're safe here," I say, walking toward her, "On Berk, they know they're in danger so they defend themselves and their own kind."
"I've never heard of dragons protecting something that isn't themselves," she says.
"Then you have been lied to," I say, making her look at me in confusion. "Years ago, Berk crashed here on a journey to a new island. They saw how we lived with dragons. Most of the dragons I saved from Berk and thought we were being invaded, but that's the only time they attacked. Not even. We helped them get on their way, and they repaid us by stealing something that I treasured. Plasma, it's possible that your parents came here, and lied to you about the way that dragons can act."
"Well, that's not possible because my mother died when I was young and my dad supposedly abandoned me when I was three," she says.
"Oh, I'm sorry," I apologize.
"But...I've never really felt like I was born there," she adds.
"Really?"
"Yeah. I mean, I was nothing like the people who claimed to share my blood; I didn't want to hurt dragons, but I had to at least try; when Stoick said I'd be the one to kill the Nightmare, I couldn't take it. I got the first boat I saw and left everything I ever knew," she said, "I never thought I'd end up on an island where they live in peace with the creatures."
"We do a lot more than live in peace. We protect each other," I tell her. She paused before resting her chin on the windowsill.
"What did Berk take from you?" she asked after a moment. My heart jerked as I thought of my daughter, sitting next to the girl from Berk.
"They took my youngest daughter. She was the village's everything; one of the few reminders of my wife we had. She'd be about your age now," I say.
"I'm sorry. I don't know anything about that," she said apologetically. I look out the window and to the cliff, feeling the wind blow against my hair. I felt Sages fingers stroke my cheek.
"Keep going," she seemed to order.
"When do you usually wake up in the morning?" I ask Plasma, glancing at her from the corner of my eye.
"Before sunrise," she says.
"See that cliff over there, overlooking the ocean?" I ask, pointing to the distance.
"The one with the boulder?" she asks and I nod.
"Why don't you meet me there in the morning," I suggest.
"W-why?" her voice shook slightly.
"I'm going to teach you to meditate," I say and she looks at me before I stand up and walk for the door. "Get some rest. I'll see you tomorrow."
