Chapter 12

Stevie stood there crying, all this because he said he didn't want anymore kids

She looked over to the coffee table and saw the pictures of Lindsey and his fiancé, they looked incredibly happy

Did he really need her back in his life? He seemed so happy without her, all she brought him was misery, well in her eyes anyway

She knew that when he loved, he loved hard and losing his fiancé had to be eating him alive, on top of that he was faced with taking care of a son that would remind him of her everytime he looked in David's face.

She was torn between whether to stay or go, she honestly didn't know what was best.

Lindsey walked back out with David, "You're still here?"

Stevie walked up to him and kissed him hard

"I'm so sorry" she told him

"I need you," Lindsey pressed his forehead to hers

"I don't make you happy" she rubbed her nose against his and he felt a tear on his face

"Why would you think that?" He kissed her nose

"Because we always fight, and I always leave..."

"Then, please, don't leave."

"I saw the picture...I saw how happy you were..."

"We were," he smiled sadly

"If she was still alive, and we ran into each other like we did, would what happened earlier still of happened?"

"Steph..."

"Answer me."

"No," he hung his head. Stevie closed her eyes and let herself cry

"Then there's your answer Linds"

"So you would rather I cheat on her? I loved her."

"Lindsey, I'm saying that you only want me because your grieving for her and you miss her"

"You think that? Jen used to tell me that she didn't mind that I loved you more than her! You think you are just for comfort?"

"Aren't I? Answer me honestly, when we made love earlier, was I the only person you were thinking of? Don't lie to me..."

"Yes!"

"Truthfully? I can handle the truth...I'd rather know"

"You don't believe me?"

"I'm asking because I need to know, and you still didn't answer"

"You were the only person." Stevie breathed a sigh of relief

"I'm going to feed David," Lindsey took him into the kitchen

Stevie hadn't even noticed that Evie had snuck back into Lindsey's room and had gone to sleep again

Looking at the ceiling for a second Stevie sat on the sofa, she started crying and became hysterical very fast

"Stevie?" Lindsey walked back in with David and his bottle. "What's wrong?"

She couldn't breath she was crying so much, gasping for air. "Stephanie," Lindsey placed the bottle on the table and David safely in a chair, "Talk to me," he cradled her against him

"I wish he'd have just killed me" she barely got out the words through the sobs

"What?" Lindsey couldn't understand her

"Jimmy...I...wish...he'd...have...just... killed...me..."

"Don't you ever say that again!" Lindsey yelled, standing up

"It's true...this hurts so much, I wish he'd just ended it!" She pulled at her hair

"Stop saying that!"he grabbed her and shook her

"Everyone would be happier" she kept pushing

"Shut up!"

"You'd have a normal life"

"I love you!"

"You'd be better off without me! He should have done us all the favour!"

"God damnit! Shut your fucking mouth!" He screamed

"Maybe I can go find him again!" She didn't know what she was even saying now

"What is wrong with you?!"

"I hurt!" She screamed back

"I do too but you don't see me wanting to die!"

"You're not in love with someone that won't ever love you back the same!" She pushed him

"Who said I'm not in love with you?"

"Your always going to love her! You were happy with her! She gave you a child!"

"So did you!" He yelled

"That's different!"

"How so?" He asked

"Evie isn't your child! No matter how much we pretend, she doesn't have any of you in her!"

"You constantly remind me of that, and I constantly remind you that I don't care. Why do you keep bringing that up? I am so in love with you, Stephanie. I love you more than the woman that gave me a biological child, and I don't love Evie any different than I do David."

"Because it's true! I know you love her, but I want a baby that's both of us, and Evie isn't and neither is David, but you don't want that!"

"I have a son that I barely a week old! I just lost my fiancé! Of course I don't want a baby at this time! I don't know what I'm doing with David! I don't know how to take care of him!"

"But you said you loved me, and it would be nine plus months before they were here..."

"I do love you and I do want more kids, but what about while you're pregnant? You'd be taking care of a small baby and a two year old while I worked. It's just not a good time."

"But I'd have your baby growing...I can do it..."

"Stevie I said no!" She stayed quiet

"What brought this little outburst?" He asked more calmly now

"It doesn't matter" she said almost silently

"You were talking about dying, I think it does," he began to feed David

"Lindsey leave it!" She told him sternly

"No, you are going to talk to me!"

"Jimmy found me a few months ago, he's making me live with him..."'

"Excuse me?"

"I'm tired of everything going against me, I'm tired of this life," she began to cry again

Lindsey finished feeding David who had fallen asleep, he walked into the bedroom and put him in his cot, Evie was sitting in bed looking at him

"Daddy, you and mommy stopped yelling?" She had obviously been crying

"I'm so sorry you had to hear that baby!" He sat on the bed and cuddled her to him, stroking her hair until she fell asleep again

Lindsey kissed her head and laid her down gently, covering her up and returning to Stevie, "You're not going back there."

"I am Lindsey" she told him

"No."

"This doesn't have anything to do with you"

"Yes it does. The woman that I love is living with her rapist."

Stevie didn't say anything and so Lindsey continued to talk

"And what happens when he knocks you up again? Are you going to come crying back to me once more?"

"I wouldn't want to inconvenience you like that," she said sarcastically

"I didn't mean it like that..."

"I don't get you sometimes, you say you love me and that you want a baby, but you want to go back to him."

"Because you don't want one like I do!" She told him

"Of course I don't! I am raising a newborn alone!"

"You wouldn't be why don't you get that! I'd be his mommy..."

"I don't want a baby right now, Stevie!"

"I'm talking about David! You wouldn't be alone because I'd be his mommy!"

"He already has one!" Lindsey said before he could stop it

"She's dead, Lindsey!" Lindsey stood there stunned before he surged forward and grabbed her face

"Don't you ever say that again!" He said through his teeth

"Get your hands off of me!" She shoved him

"Who the hell do you think you are?" He asked her, trying to keep his voice down

"I'm trying to be sensible! David needs a mother!"

"And I said he already has one! I don't want you to replace her!"

"But you replaced Jimmy as Evie's..." she said sadly

"Jimmy isn't a good person!"

"That doesn't matter, we aren't talking about him as a person right now"

"No, he's only a rapist," Lindsey said sarcastically

"He said he loved me..."

"Oh well he says he loves you and you forget everything he did to you? You are so stupid! Will having a baby keep you from going home?" Lindsey asked quietly, Stevie nodded her head and turned to face the window

"Then let's do it, lets have a baby," he rubbed his brow

"Not when your like this" she said crying

"Oh my God are you being serious right now?" He puffed

"What?" She turned to face him

"You beg me for a baby, start an argument then say 'not when your like this'" he mocked her voice

"Well it's true," she shrugged

"So why have we had this whole argument, get me to agree when you know I don't want children with you..."

Stevie's eyes opened wide

"Stevie, I didnt mean that..."

"Then what did you mean? I think we should go," she picked up her purse, walking toward the bedroom to her Evie.

"Stevie wait..." he grabbed her arm and pulled her toward him

"What?" He saw the pain and tears in her eyes

"I didn't mean that..."

"I'm sorry I'm not good enough to have your baby..." she had genuine failure in her voice

"I never said that. I don't want kids right now."

"But Linds...you didn't say that...you said you didn't want children with me" she tried to move away

"I was angry," he sighed, "Steph, I'm sorry. Look, you and Evie can sleep with me tonight and we will figure something out in the morning."

"There's nothing to figure, you haven't got room Linds"

"You're not going back to him."

"Okay..."

"I have a shirt for you to wear, it's getting late."

"Are you okay with seeing me in just a shirt?" She asked nervously

"We just had sex, I think I'll live," he chuckled

"Linds?"

"Yeah?"

"Do you think that was a mistake?"

"What? Having sex?"

"Yeah...do you think it was a mistake?" She asked him

"Of course I don't. Hell, I'd do it again right now."

"Really?" She looked at him now finally, closing the gap between them

"In a heartbeat."
