Chapter 12

Tanner

A cop stepped out of the car, his hand on his gun holster. I sucked in a breath.

"Put your hands in the air where I can see them." He said. I saw all the boys had there wings against their backs. None of us rose our hands. That is what we learned in our small group, never show fear or weakness toward anyone. Especially the police.

If you were wondering, this is the so called 'bad' group I hung out with. They took me and Robin in when our parents threw us out. The boys were nice enough to put in some school money, so whoever wants to go to school can. No one besides Robin and I wanted to go to school. They really aren't bad guys.

"I said, put your hands where I can see them." The cop repeated. No one rose their hand. The only thing we did was slowly open our wings. The guys with white wings stayed at the back of the alley, so the cop won't see our wings. It is one way we managed to get away.

"Bird in three." Ted said. The police grabbed his gun and pointed it at us, while we counted down from three. Anyone who didn't count down at the right time was probably a dead man.

  Go.

I opened my wings and flew as fast and high as I could. The officer was struck with shock as he saw all of us flying away. I smirked as I looked down at the officer.

We flew toward Times Square and landed on two buildings. Half on one building and the other half on the other building. I looked at River and smiled slightly. She groaned and squinted her eyes. I looked up at the cloudy skies of New York. You see, we live on Long Island and fly to the city whenever we want.

"Come on River. Wake up." I said, wiping away a strand of her hair. She slowly sat up. I turned toward the other building.

"She's waking up!" I yelled. Ted flew over gracefully.

"Damn. Her wings look pretty bad. Missing feathers." Ted said, landing next to us and kneeling down with me. River rubbed her head and groaned again.

"Ugh. How did I get here?" She asked, looking around. I smiled.

"We took you." Ted said. River looked at him weirdly.

"Who are you?" She asked. Ted rose an eyebrow.

"I'm Ted, leader of the BMX Birds." Ted said. That was the name of the group he ran. You can only join if you have wings and bmx. River yawned and rubbed her eyes. She winced, pulling her wings against her back. Looking at her wings, she grabbed one and pulled it so she could see it. She saw the dirty and missing feathers and closed her eyes, sucking in a sharp breath.

"Damn." She cursed. Standing up, Ted and I stood up with her. She walked to the edge of the building, her wings out slightly. She looked down at the streets, wind blowing her hair away from her face. All Ted and I did was watch.

  "Tanner?" She asked.

"Yeah?" I asked. She didn't reply.

"Order me some pepperoni pizza. I'm going home." She said. I rose an eyebrow and called Pizza Home and ordered for her house. All of a sudden, River jumped off the building.

I saw River glide through the hallways of Times Square, watching her hover low above the ground. I saw some teenagers whip out there phones and record what she was doing. Smiling, I jumped off the roof and followed her.

Out of the corner of my eye, I saw Ted and his friends fly towards the skate park. Sighing in content, I got on Rivers tail. She looked back and saw me, then turned back to face forward. She made a sudden left turn, and left me going straight. Stopping, I flew higher to get a better sight of her, but she was no where to be seen.
