Chapter 11
Tanner
I saw River fall on her face. Panicking, I picked her up and opened my wings, taking off into the clouds. By now, I didn't care who saw my wings. Flying as fast as I could, I flew her to the nearest hospital. Her wings were extremely burnt and some feathers were missing. She had as and burn marks all over her, and her clothes barely covered her.
Crashing through the doors, I landed and saw the lady at the front desk get up immediately. She gawked at me and pressed a button on the keyboard. A doctor and nurse came bolting in.
"Follow us!" The doctor yelled, running into a random empty room. I gently placed her on the table, her wings out and dropping into the floor. They cleaned her off and started tending to the burns.
"Hey kid, you have to go." A nurse said. I shook my head no.
"Not without her." I said. Cliff bolted through the doors. He walked up to her and moved some hair out of her face. I stiffened. Cliff walked up to me.
"What the hell did you do?!" Cliff exclaimed. I glared at him. He shivered and started glaring back. We got into a glaring contest, which I eventually won. He closed his eyes and lowered his head.
"We need you out of here now." The doctors said. I started glaring at him.
"No." I said sternly. The doctor pressed a button. Security came walking in.
"Get ready to get the needles. She lost a lot of blood, and we are going to take a few blood tests to see her DNA. The burns should heal soon, considering the fast rate of healing her body is going through." The doctor said to the nurse. My eyes widened.
"You can't do that." Cliff said. The doctor sighed and rolled his eyes, turning toward us.
"Who's stopping me?" The doctor said. I punched him. Cliff gawked at me.
"What?" I asked. Cliff shrugged and the nurses ran out of the room. The doctor got up and we got in a fist fight. Security came bolting through the doors. I kicked the doctors head, knocking him out. Cliff and I made a semi circle around River. Cliff punched a security guard in the jaw. I punched another in the temple.
"How did you..." Cliff drew.
"This isn't my first rodeo." I said. Scanning my surroundings, some more security came piling into the room. I saw a window large enough for me to fit. Picking up River, I opened my wings, and pushed up and toward the window. Closing my wings, I smashed through the window. My wings snapped open, and I saw Cliff follow me. Flapping my wings, I reached the clouds. Once Rivers body touched the clouds, her body almost immediately healed. I saw a flash of a red wing.
"Robin!" I called. The wing disappeared into the cloud, just to have Meadow and Robin come toward my way.
"How is River healing so quickly?" Robin asked.
"The cloud is doing it to her." I said. Meadows eyes widened.
"Woah..." Meadow drew out. She took a small, cautious glance at me.
"Where are we going to take her?" I asked. Meadow and Robin shrugged. Cliff caught up to us, a split lip and a black eye. Meadow gasped and flew as close as her wings would allow her to get to Cliff.
"What happened?!" She exclaimed.
"I'm fine. Really." Cliff said with a small smile. Robin cringed.
"Where are we going to take her?" I asked. We all flew there, thinking. I looked down at River, and moved her hair from her forehead. All of a sudden, I came up with the perfect place.
"I know where. You guys might not be so sure, but I'm taking her there." I said. Robin sulked.
"No, not there." Robin said. I stared at her.
"There is no where else. Meadow, your parents and sister don't even know you have wings, Cliff," I drew. Cliff rose an eyebrow and crossed his arms. "I just don't want you near her. So can you please go to wherever you live, and stay there?" I asked, glaring at him. He shook his head.
"No. I'm not leaving her." He said. I shrugged.
"Alright, not my fault if you don't like where I am taking her. Or if you don't like who will help protect her." I said, nosediving into town. I made sure to hold onto River as tight as I could when I opened my wings, so she doesn't keep falling. I glided over some buildings and finally found my place. The skatepark.
Landing in the middle of the skatepark, I snapped my wings against my spine. Getting some weird stares, I put my hood on and carried River over to the corner no one goes in. Some of my old 'friends' sat there staring at me. Ted, the leader, stood up with his arms crossed. Ted is a muscular guy, with blonde hair and blue eyes, freckles on his cheeks.
"What do you want?" Ted asked. I sighed.
"I need you to help me, uh, my friend." I said. I held her out. Ted gently picked her up.
"She has wings." He said. I nodded meekly.
"Yeah. She just got out of a fire. Firemen, police, and ambulances are looking for her everywhere." I said. Ted rose an eyebrow and gave her back to me.
"Alright. Police swarm this place like flies, we will have to take her to the place." He said. I closed my eyes and sucked in a breath.
"It is the only place she will be safe and you know it." Ted said.
"Fine." I said. Ted smiled.
"Alright guys, get up. We need you to help the girl in Tanners arms not get caught by the Bugs. She is like us, and needs to get away from them." Ted said. Everyone stood up and nodded, opening all of their wings. Multiple different colors of wings met my eyes. There was multiple browns, whites, and greys. Ted and I led the way, everyone else following us. We soared just below the cloud.
Once I spotted the place, I quickly tilted my wings to go down into the long and dark alley.
Turning my body upward, I landed on my feet and waited for everyone else to land. Ted landed next, then everyone else.
Just as we landed, a police car rolled into the alley, sirens on, guns pointed at us.
