Chapter 29

"You miss your brother, don't you?" said Acornkit. Willowkit frowned. They were sitting outside of the nursery. Willowkit was invisible, nobody except Acornkit was paying attention to her. Acornkit was sulking because his brother had won a fight and had apparently cheated.
"Yeah, sort of," shrugged Willowkit. The thing is, she didn't remember him. She missed the thought of a brother. She missed the possibility of a better life, with a sibling. A life where Mintspot wasn't crippled. Where Beetlejaw would teach her to hunt and fight. Where Stormkit would play with her. A life where she she had a happy family. A Clan that saw her and heard her. She missed a life of happiness. Joy. Hope.
"Maybe he's not dead," Acornkit said, trying to cheer Willowkit up.
               "Huh?" frowned Willowkit.
"Maybe he's a live somewhere. Maybe he's like I dunno, a kittypet," piped in Acornkit.
               "Maybe," shrugged Willowkit. "Probably not."
"Why not?" asked Acornkit. "We can find him."
"Ha. How?" said Willowkit. "We can't do that. Mintspot has been searching for literally moons and she hasn't found him. If she hasn't then we won't. He's gone. Stormkit's gone..." And with him all hope of a happy, normal life.
"Do you wanna play?" asked Acornkit finally.
               "No," replied Willowkit.
"come on. I don't want to play with Snailkit," Acornkit said.
"I don' want to play," replied Willowkit.
"Why not?" sighed Acornkit. He liked Willowkit. He wanted her to be his friend. He wanted to cheer her up. But she just never seemed to want to play. Sometimes they'd play but somehow Mintspot would ruin it or Willowkit would suddenly turn sullen, like she had committed a crime. He wished she'd be more.... energetic and happy. She seemed to be sad all the time. He didn't understand why she was sad about her brother. She couldn't even remember him. Plus, she had him. They could be friends. They could be best friends.
"Let's play!" pushed Acornkit. "Come on! It'll be fun."
"I don't want to," said Willowkit although deep down, she did. She really wanted to play. She ached to have fun. She wanted to be Acornkit's best friend. She just wanted to roll about in the dirt with him. Have fun. Laugh. But she held herself back. She was disrespecting her dead/ maybe not dead brother. Mintspot wouldn't agree and Beetlejaw..., it's not like he would disagree with Mintspot.
"Acornkit!" yelled Snailkit from across the clearing. Willowkit ignored him but Acornkit lifted his head.
"What?" he snapped back, slightly angry, although his urge to play and have fun almost forced him to forget about the disagreement with his brother.
"Let's play. Don't sulk," Snailkit said, his eyes bright. Acornkit didn't move for a moment, to leave Snailkit waiting. But Willowkit already knew Acornkit was going to go play. A few moments later, Acornkit bounded towards Snailkit and they tumbled on a pile to the ground. Willowkit sniffed and turned away.
