Chapter 30
"He's gone," Rook said.
"Really?" said Domino.
"Yep, he left. He didn't even teach me how to hunt," sighed Rook. Domino sighed with relief.
"He probably can't even hunt," said Domino.
"Of course he can!" exclaimed Rook. "If he can almost kill us, I'm pretty sure that he can hunt. Plus, how do you think they survived?"
"Don't even remind me about that. I'm glad they're gone. Everything can go back to how it was," smiled Domino.
"Yeah, I guess," shrugged Rook. He didn't want everything to go back to normal normal. It was always the same. He would miss Hades, although he would never say that aloud.
"Well everything can go back to normal then," smiled Domino. "Let's celebrate."
"This isn't a time to celebrate!" exclaimed Rook.
"Why not?" sighed Domino. "Come on, how 'bout we look around the neighbourhood. Maybe Poppy will talk to us." Rook made a face.
"She's only going to make fun of us- no you," sighed Rook. Domino frowned. Poppy was one of the prettiest cats in the neighbourhood. She was a beautifully groomed turkish van calico cat.
"She hasn't gotten to know me yet," said Domino. Rook shrugged.
"If you say so," he said.
Rook and Domino trotted along a white fence then leapt over into the garden below. Rook sniffed. He smelt cat all over the garden. A strong scent.
"A cat lives here," said Rook.
"Yeah, this is Ben's house," said Domino. Domino knew Ben quite well as before he had met Rook, they had been best friends. Rook had never met Ben.
"Oh, is he here?" Rook said, curious. He trotted towards one of the windows and leapt up. He peered inside.
"Let's go," said Domino, motioning with his tail.
"Why? Maybe he's home," said Rook.
"Let's just go, he's not here," Domino said.
"Yeah, I'm right here," said a voice behind them. Rook turned around. On the fence, a small Japanese Bobtail Long Hair cat was perched on the fence. Domino turned around and made a face.
"Oh heyyyy," he said, grimacing.
"What is it Domino?" taunted Ben. "Finally visiting me after what, oh like half a year?"
"Well.... I was busy," said Domino. Rook trotted to Domino's side.
"hey," he grinned. "I'm Rook. I'm so happy to finally meet you. Domino's told me all about you."
"Yeah? Did he tell you about how he just ditched me the moment you guys became friends?" Ben almost growled. Rook didn't know what to say. He glanced at Domino who looked speechless.
"He didn't say it like that. He said that well..., you guys weren't getting along too good..," Rook said, making it up. Domino had never told him that he had ghosted his former best friend.
"Whatever, get off my turf," snapped Ben.
"Right let's go," said Domino, nodding to Rook. Rook shrugged. As they turned to leave, Ben called after them.
"Oh and by the way, Poppy has a mate," added Ben. Domino pricked his ears but pretended not to care. They leapt over the fence and trotted on the sidewalk together.
"So you ditched Ben?" asked Rook.
"Yeah... he wasn't the best best friend, you know? He's really bossy if you get to know him and he doesn't let you have any friends besides him," explained Domino, rolled his eyes.
"So where are we going?" asked Rook.
"Dunno. Find some other cats to talk to, I guess," shrugged Domino.
"You're not upset about Poppy, right?" Rook said, raising his eyes.
"No no," lied Domino.
"Let's just see her. In case. Maybe Ben was lying," Rook said.
"Maybe," said Domino, unsure.
