Chapter 27

Willowkit dreamt that night. She had never had a dream like that. She never had dreams.

She is standing in the middle of a large field of tall, swaying grass. There are pretty flowers dotted everywhere. In the dark night sky, stars are shimmering. The moon casts a calm, soothing light onto her. She looks around. Where is everybody? She isn't in camp. She shouldn't be out of camp. Don't worry, a voice echoes around her. The voice is soothing and gentle. King and loving. Willowkit glances up. She looked around. She sniffs. She cannot see or smell anybody else. You're not going to get in trouble, the voice continues. Willowkit believes it. Here, you can smile. Here you can relax. You can let the barriers down. You can smile. You can run. You can be yourself. Willowkit didn't know how to react. Be herself? How was she going to do that? Willowkit pricked her ears. She heard the sound of the trickle of water. She trotted towards it, pushing through the tall grasses. Maybe she would find RiverClan if she followed the river. Finally, she burst out of the grasses. In front of her ran a beautiful river. Willowkit crouched by the bank, staring into the dark depths of the water. She saw herself reflected back. Her small ears. Her messy fur. Her eyes, filled with sadness, filled with pain. Pain she didn't understand. Sadness she didn't understand. She sighed. Where am I? She cried out. There was a long pause. Willowkit glanced around, waiting for the familiar voice. You're ok. Willowkit frowned. That wasn't the answer she was hoping for... But somehow, it calmed her. Willowkit took a deep breath and sat down. She sat down by the river and listened to the calming water. She let herself enjoy the feeling of being alone. Not lonely. Just alone. She cleared her mind of all the stressing thoughts. Of all the things she pretended to be. All the things she did and didn't do to please others. Just for a while, she could enjoy herself. Just for a moment, she could be a bit happy. That was enough for her. More than enough.

It was much much more peace and joy than she had felt since she was born.
