Chapter 26
"Isn't it great that Dad doesn't have soooo much work anymore?" smiled Saffanah. She was petting Rook, sitting on her bed with a colouring book and pencils at her side.
"Yeah. He didn't go to work for a whole full day yesterday!" exclaimed Rook in reply. Saffanah smiled and scratched Rook behind the ear.
"I think Dad's getting promoted," continued Saffanah. "It's going to be great. We might even get a bigger garden. And a dog!" A dog? Rook snorted. Why would Saffanah want a dog? Cats were much better.
"Of course, you're always going to be my best friend. But maybe the dog can be all of our friends?" Saffanah said. Rook shrugged.
"I mean..., as long as you love me more than the dog," he said.
"I'd name the dog Diamond if she was a girl and Simon if she was a boy," Saffanah said.
"Why Simon?" Rook said.
"Saffanah!" called Diana from downstairs. Saffanah looked up.
"Yeah?" she answered.
"Lucy is coming in ten minutes to pick you up. Get ready!" Diana replied.
"Ok!" said Saffanah. She leapt off her bed, making Rook jump slightly. He watched curled up on her bed as Saffanah pulled out a t-shirt and some shorts from her cupboard. Then she grabbed a bag she had packed in the morning.
"I'm going to Lucy's house but I'm going to be back before dinner," Saffanah explained to Rook.
"Have fun," said Rook. Saffanah jogged downstairs. With a sigh and a stretch, Rook leapt off the bed and trotted down the stairs. In the kitchen, Diana was giving Saffanah some strawberries for tea. Rook padded past the kitchen and slipped out of the house. He trotted down a few streets towards Domino's house. He was going to tell Domino everything Hades had told him that morning.
The two best friends sat together in the attic.
"So?" asked Domino.
"He told me so much!" Rook said.
"Well spill then," smiled Domino, his tail twitching in anticipation.
"Apparently the Clans were created like long ago. They rule everything in that forest! There are four Clans, as you know. RiverClan, WindClan, ShadowClan and ThunderClan. ShadowClan sounds quite violent and dark, don't you think?" Rook said.
"All the Clans sound dark," was Domino's response.
"Yeah well... Anyways, each Clan has their bit of territory. ShadowClan has like the territory with pine trees or something so it's really dark and shadowy. They are known for being really sneaky. ThunderClan are known to be brave and loyal. Apparently they like to take in loners and pets."
"Pets? As in cat pets. As in us?"
"Well yeah. Except they call them kittypets," shrugged Rook.
"What are loners exactly? Lonely cats?" asked Domino.
"No. They're just cats without a home I guess, just wandering about. So yeah. May I continue or would you like to add more?"
"No no. Go on."
"Thank you," Rook said then continued, "WindClan are known to be fast. Apparently they're really skinny. They live off mostly rabbits. They live like in a huge field you know, so that's where most rabbits are. Then there is RiverClan. RiverClan are known for-"
"Swimming," finished Domino. Rook gave Domino a pointed look but nodded.
"Yeah, swimming. No need to interrupt," sighed Rook. "Anyways, each Clan protects their own. They even have a hierarchy."
"Oh yeah? Like best killer, second best killer, third best killer?" mocked Domino. He didn't like the way Rook seemed so obsessed. The way Rook's eyes gleamed when he talked about the Clans. He didn't like that Rook was interested in some violent vicious cats far far away.
"You know that all this is probably made up, right?" Domino said.
"Of course it isn't!" exclaimed Rook.
"How do you know it's real?" asked Domino.
"I-I... I just do...," Rook said, frowning at the ground. "I think I come from there."
"Y-you?" laughed Domino then turned serious. "Really?"
"Yeah really. Is that so crazy to think? I mean, I don't know my real family. I know that I wasn't born in Saffanah's house! I must have come from somewhere. I must have parents. Siblings perhaps."
"How do you know they're not dead? How do you know they're no happily living with another family. You know that kittens are passed around a lot. From family to family. That's what happened to you. You were probably born in some nice warm pet store and your weird neighbour bought you then didn't want you and dumped you at Saffanah's."
"I know that's not possible. I remember something from when I was born... a- a..." Rook trailed off. He couldn't find the right word.
"What are you planning on doing with your newfound information anyways?" asked Domino, looking at Rook worriedly. Rook thought for a moment then sighed. He shrugged.
"Nothing. Nothing really. Don't worry. I mean, it's just some background information. I don't have to follow up on it. Plus- plus my life is here," Rook said decisively. Domino smiled in relief.
"Thank you;" he said.
"But maybe I could visit the Clans," Rook added as an afterthought.
"What!?" cried Domino.
"Yeah yeah yeah..," nodded Rook absentmindedly. "I need to talk to Hades."
"No. I think you need to go back and see your nice perfect house and your perfect owners and you need to realise that your life is great just as it is. No need to go hunting for some wild Clan cats," Domino said, trying to put sense into Rook.
"No Domino. I feel a pull to the Clans. It must be for some reason," Rook said.
"No. You're just being your curious self. You don't need to visit the Clans. I'm like more than ninety percent sure that you weren't born there. I mean, no offence, but look at you. You're- you're not very muscly. You're not very good at hunting. You're not very good at fighting. You're not very- very Clanlike."
"How would you know what Clanlike is?" retorted Rook.
"Look," sighed Domino. "All I'm saying is..., your obsession with the Clans is just... well you're obsessed."
"Not obsessed. Just interested," Rook corrected.
"So you're going to visit the Clans? Ask around if somebody lost their little kit at birth?" Domino said. Rook thought for a moment. It was ridiculous, just as Domino was saying. He sighed.
"You're right. That's- that's stupid. I mean.., I'm happy here. And I certainly do not come from a Clan..."
"Thank you, finally," Domino sighed.
