Chapter 15
Willowkit woke up to Mintspot snoring gently. Quietly, Willowkit padded towards the nursery entrance. Mintspot opened an eye. Willowkit stopped in her tracks. Mintspot blinked then changed position, curling up into a small ball. Willowkit slipped outside. The sun had just begun rising. Beetlejaw and his patrol were talking quietly by the camp entrance. Willowkit tilted her head, watching them silently. Then she trotted towards the cover of bushes and shadows. There, she made her way towards the camp entrance and to the warrior's den. She stood just beside the warrior's den, watching as Beetlejaw finally led the patrol outside. Willowkit shuffled on her spot and lay down. She waited. Finally, the soon rose fully, birds chirped and cats started to wake. The first one out of the warrior's den was Lizardpelt. Lizardpelt glanced at Willowkit then padded towards the fresh-kill pile. Then Halestorm and Bluewing emerged from the warrior's den. They conversed briefly together and waited at the camp entrance. A few moments later, their bleary eyed apprentices trotted up to them. They greeted each other warmly and tiredly and then slipped out of camp. Willowkit watched and listened. It was great, being invisible. Finally, the warrior Willowkit had been waiting for. Brownfur emerged from the warrior's den. His muscles rippled under his thick brown fur. His ears were sharp and he walked with confidence. Willowkit had always admired him. As he made his way towards the camp entrance, Willowkit couldn't find the strength to run up to him. That wasn't what she did. She didn't run up to cats and catch their attention. She just stood, invisible and sometimes other cats would get her attention. But she had a purpose now. She was going to find out everything that had happened that night. Taking a deep breath, Willowkit bounded towards Brownfur. He heard her small footsteps behind him and turned around. His whiskers twitched at the sight of her.
"Hello Willowkit, how are you?" he asked in a deep voice. Brownfur had not talked to Willowkit. He had passed by the nursery a few times, when she had only been a few days old, but after that, he had kept away from her, Mintspot and even Beetlejaw.
"Hi Brownfur," Willowkit said in a small voice. Brownfur's eyes flickered to the nursery.
"Are you alright?" he asked.
"Yeah," nodded Willowkit. "I wanted to ask you a question."
"Yes, tell me," Brownfur said.
"Um..., it's about the day I was born," Willowkit said slowly. Brownfur's face turned serious. He nodded without betraying any emotion.
"Why don't you ask your mother about that?" he said as gently as he could. He was about to turn around. Willowkit did something she had never thought she would do. She ran up to him and yelled, "Stop. Wait!"
"I have to go hunt," Brownfur told her.
"Please tell me," begged Willowkit. "I need to know." Brownfur stood still for a moment. He thought. Willowkit watched him with hopeful eyes.
"I'll tell you," he said finally. "But not now. I'm busy. Tonight. Maybe." With that, he swivelled around and slipped out of camp. Willowkit's body buzzed with excitement. She had done it. She wanted to jump up in victory and yell, but that would bring too much attention to her. Keeping her head low, she trotted back towards the nursery. Suddenly, something bowled into her. Willowkit squeaked.
"Hey," grinned Acornkit, pinning Willowkit down. "Why did you wake up so early." Willowkit wriggled away from his grip and shook herself.
"No reason," she shrugged.
"Do you want to play with me and Snailkit?" asked Acornkit.
"Ok," nodded Willowkit. "But, not now. Sorry." Acornkit sighed.
"Alright," he said and trotted away. Regretfully, Willowkit padded into the nursery. Only Mintspot was there. Mintspot was stretched out on the ground, her eyes open.
"Hi Mintspot," Willowkit said in a small voice.
"Hi," replied Mintspot flatly.
"Are you ok?" asked Willowkit.
"How do you live like that?" asked Mintspot, thought her mind wasn't with Willowkit. It was as if she was talking to somebody else, in another time. But no, her questions were directed to Willowkit.
"How do you live happy knowing you'll never see or know your brother?" continued Mintspot in a small voice. "I can't live like that."
"I- I know I'm going to find him," whispered Willowkit. "He's ok."
"I never did anything wrong. StarClan shouldn't have done that. They had no right," Mintspot said, breathing heavily. She didn't seem to see Willowkit.
"Why did they take him?" Mintspot sobbed. "Why didn't take me. Anybody, anybody but Stormkit." Willowkit shuffled uneasily. She didn't know who Mintspot was talking to anymore. She know she should run out of the nursery, Mintspot didn't want her hearing this. But this had something to do with Willowkit. Willowkit wasn't leaving. She stood, watching, slightly in horror but she stayed.
"Anybody. Anybody... They could have taken anybody," whispered Mintspot. "They should have taken Willowkit."
