Chapter 9
"How do you know that name?" Jasper asked all sense of mirth gone from his expression, several wisps of blue fire appearing around him.
"A nightmare." I replied as he walked towards me and I walked backwards until he had me pinned against a wall.
"What did you see?" Jasper asked angrily as the wisps reflected his anger.
"You yelling at a man named Aberforth, he said something about a woman named Willow and then I woke up because you threw a bottle at him." I said panicking.
"Leave her alone Jasper, you're scaring her." Rameses growled looking at Jasper coldly from his seat on top of the island. Jasper looked at my panicked face before backing away allowing me a sigh of relief.
"I did not mean to scare you." Jasper apologized the anger melting from his and being replaced by remorse as the wisps of flames slowly disappeared. Jasper looked over his shoulder his attention caught by the opening of a door and the sound of footsteps running down the hall. Before I could react Jasper took on the form of flames and surrounded me and Rameses. Next thing I knew we were in a park I didn't recognize Jasper had brought us to a beautiful pond with koi and goldfish in it. Jasper was a few feet away having shrunk by a few inches. Jasper fell to the ground as the rain struck his back causing a sizzling sound, he ran to hide under the shade of a pavillion to avoid the rain.
"Are you alright?" I asked running over to him.
"I did not think this through." Jasper chuckled looking at me while shivering. He jolted upright staring into the rain alongside Rameses. The reason for their paranoia was made clear as a lioness with a golden collar emerged from the storm.
"I have no intentions of hurting the kitten." The lioness said as Rameses quickly calmed down as if she were a long-time friend. Meanwhile Jasper seemed as on edge as before moving in front of me in a protective manner. It seemed odd to me since he had no reason to protect me and Rameses had no problem with the talking lioness.
"You're lucky I kept Valencia from suspicion over the stunt you pulled." The lioness said glaring at Jasper I moved to stand beside Jasper while Rameses came to stand on my other side.
"Who are you?" I asked trying to diffuse the growing tension between the lioness and Jasper.
"I am the spirit known as Bastet in your culture." The lioness said reminding me of the cat goddess I had read about in the egyptian mythology book.
"Bastet is a goddess isn't she." I asked Rameses.
"The very same as from egypt." Rameses replied.
"How did you like my gift?" Bastet asked passing a paw over her ear.
"What gift!" Jasper exclaimed looking me over as if I was holding a live cobra.
"If it weren't for my gift, the kitten would have been hurt by that stitch eyed shade." Bastet said crossly. I looked at Rameses realizing that the lioness had the same eyes as the woman who had given me the statue, that had become Rameses, so long ago.
"What do you want." Jasper asked aggressively igniting a ball of fire in his hand.
"Although your bravery is endearing, you are much too weak to be challenging a goddess wisp." Bastet stated taking a few steps towards us. Only causing Jasper to become even more defensive.
"Anyways i've taken an interest in the kitten, so I wanted to help her and in turn you." Bastet said her eyes glowing.
"We don't need your help." Jasper stated coldly.
"Why is he so upset?" I asked Rameses.
"He is an idiot." Rameses replied bored with the situation.
"Don't be mean." I reprimanded him.
"I believe a pedestrian left their umbrella."Bastet said looking at the picnic table behind us. When I looked underneath it I found a large red umbrella with black pokkadots.
"Now before I go a quick lesson." Bastet said waking me from my thoughts.
"Magic is about force of will, to force an object or being to do as you will them to. To perform a spell you must will it to be so. I find a good first spell is Reserare, a simple spell to unlock things. Enjoy the rest of your night." Bastet said disappearing.
"I hate so called gods."Jasper muttered looking at the spot where Bastet had been only moments before.
"Where are we?" I asked looking at the skyscrapers that towered around us.
"Well the best way to find out is to look around and explore." Rameses said walking towards the edge of the pavillion. I walked to stand beside him before opening the umbrella looking back at Jasper who seemed worried about the rain.
"It'll be alright the rain can't touch you as long as your under the umbrella even if you have to take a wisp form, and we'll look for an indoor place quickly." I said wanting to leave the empty park and find a source of light that was stronger than that which was in the park.
"Do you trust me?" I asked holding out my hand to him.
"Fine let's go already." Jasper said turning into a wisp form and flying under the umbrella hovering over my shoulder. I walked out from under the pavillion the umbrella deflecting the rain with Rameses staying by my side and Jasper sticking close. The three of us walked down the street passing shady people and homeless people as we went. Eventually we reached a lakeside walkway which was rather chilly.
"I believe we are being followed." Rameses stated walking calmly with his claws out.
"I agree something isn't right." Jasper whispered as I realized it was just the three of us on the path.
"Don't look back, keep walking." Rameses whispered an edge to his voice. I went into a speed walk seeing a large building with a stairway leading up to it the sign above the doors said Shedd Aquarium.
"Oh great, more water." Jasper said sighing.
"How do you know what an aquarium is?" I asked wondering what time era he was from.
"Contrary to your beliefs we victorians had ornate aquariums." Jasper stated sarcastically.
"Keep quiet, and turn around slowly." A male voice said from behind me. I did as I was asked and came face to face with a pale haired teenager brandishing a knife.
"Give us your money or you'll end up hurt." Another darker haired boy commanded coming to stand beside the knife wielder.
"I don't have any money." I stated fearfully at which point Jasper caused a plume of blue fire to erupt in the duo's faces. I bolted down the stairs and then the path away from whence we had come Rameses on my heels and Jasper keeping under the umbrella.
"Where did she go!" One of them exclaimed.
"I don't know, she can't have gone far." The other replied I ran at full tilt looking for somewhere to hide I ran across a grassy expanse to a building entrance that said The Field Museum East Entrance. I tried pulling on the doors only to find it locked. I panicked trying to remember the spell Bastet had told me about.
"Resetate, Resemar, Resesar." I said focusing on the lock trying to remember the word for unlock.
"Reserare." Rameses sent the word into my mind tail bristling as he watched for the duo.
"Resesare." I yelled focusing on the doors wanting them to open. I felt resistance in my mind and pushed it aside causing the doors to click and open. I rushed in Rameses and Jasper following close behind. I didn't even bother to close the door and screamed as I saw a large beastal shape. Rameses hissed and Jasper screamed taking on a human form. After a few moments Jasper lit a ball of fire above us shedding light on the stuffed gorilla in a glass case before us. I took a sigh of relief and sat down against a wall, Rameses decided to lay next to me while Jasper opted to examine the exhibit taking great interest in it.
"ELECTRIC CONVERSUS LUMINA." A woman's voice bellowed as the lights in the hall turned on. Jasper looked around igniting a ball of fire in each hand which caused him to shrink and changed his clothes he was now dressed in a larger version of his child clothes. If I had to guess he was maybe 16 years old. Rameses also jolted to attention as I scrambled to my feet.
"I think we should leave this place." Rameses stated walking down the hall a bit before stopping underneath a museum map.
"If we continue this way we should be able to leave through the west entrance." Rameses stated looking down the hall after surveying the map. The three of us walked down the hall. Rameses froze almost causing me to trip if it weren't for Jasper.
