Chapter 20
"Cas, what are you doing?" Danny asked his face going from surprised to suspicious.
"I don't have to explain myself to you. Plus aren't you a bit worried you'll draw even more attention from the cops hanging around with jailbait here?" Cas asked mockingly I decided to just leave the jailbait comment alone since there were bigger issues at hand. Cas apparently had been hoping I'd rise to her bait as she shook her head with a sigh in disappointment.
"Seeing as you seem to be bothering my friends then yes you do have to explain yourself." Danny replied.
"Fine, that wisp belongs to my boyfriend and I came to get it for him." Cas replied with a toss of her hair.
"Jasper is a person. CAS, you can't own people that's called slavery!" Danny told her pinching the bridge of his nose.
"The wisp is a creature not a person." Cas shrugged with a roll of her eyes.
"Cas, your a creature. That aside, there might be a way to break your curse. Morgan is a witch who has access to magic books which might have the cure to you being a wendigo." Danny explained although I wasn't sure I wanted to travel with Cas at this point, but maybe her behavior was caused by being a wendigo.
"A cure, don't make me laugh. Why would I want a cure?" Cas asked checking her nails.
"Maybe because you don't want to kill and eat innocent people?" Danny asked in disbelief.
"What do I care about nobodies and I think the power that comes with it is more than worth the unfortunate looks of my wendigo form." Cas replied nonchalantly.
"You don't mean that, it's your curse talking." Danny said his voice wavering, even I could tell he didn't believe it.
"I'm bored of you now." Cas replied, and that was the only warning any of us got before she moved to backhand Danny sending him flying into a rack of clothes.
"Well now that that's out of the way. Let's go wisp." Cas ordered turning back to us.
"No." Jasper replied.
"What do you mean, No?" Cas asked angrily.
"When Danny told us you were a wendigo I did some reading. Wendigos are creatures of ice and winter, you don't like heat let alone fire. That's why you were unsure when you realized I was stronger than the other wisps you went up against." Jasper replied, he had asked for the creature book last night, I just hadn't bothered to ask why he needed it since I was just too tired. Cas' face faltered before changing to intense anger.
"Maybe but I know that you don't want all of these innocent people hurt. What do you think is going to happen if a wendigo and a will-o-wisp fight here?" Cas asked making Jasper pause for only a moment before laughing.
"You think too highly of me, I don't really care about these people but I am definitely not going with you just to be a part of some experiment." Jasper retorted igniting a fireball in each hand.
"Morgan, we need to get Danny and get out of the way. This is not going to end well." Rameses told me, as much as I wanted to tell Jasper to stand down he had no reason to listen to me and he was keeping Cas' attention off of us. I looked for a way to get around the two to reach Danny and noticed on the wall was a fire alarm, if it went off everyone would evacuate and then the fight wouldn't hurt anyone else.
"You're bluffing. I'll admit you got me there for a moment, do you want to know what gave you away?" Cas asked after a few minutes staring down Jasper while I was creeping towards the fire alarm.
"Enlighten me." Jasper replied.
"Your eyes, you don't have killer in your eyes!" Cas said before it turned into a screech at the end as she shifted and changed into her wendigo form. I flipped the fire alarm causing it to ring throughout the store sending people scurrying as Cas covered her ears and thrashed back and forth like a wounded animal.
Jasper took advantage of Cas' disorientation and flew over to where Danny had landed in a blur of fire, he grabbed Danny and in a moment was at our side again handing Danny over to me before moving to be in between us and Cas who was shaking of the effects of the alarm. Danny was awake but far from coherent he was able to stand but only by leaning on me, Rameses was puffed up and looked like he wanted to join in the fight himself but his odds weren't what I would call good.
Cas leapt at Jasper with a scream, causing me to jump out of the way with Danny while Rameses went the other way as Jasper turned into flames. Cas caught flame as she passed through Jasper which only led to the clothing racks going up like tinder as the fiery wendigo collided into it. Cas got an unfortunate reprieve as the sprinkler overhead went off raining down water as Jasper sizzled and screamed.
Cas righted herself and charged for Jasper who could only throw a couple of fireballs as he shrunk before our eyes back into a child. Cas got a hold of Jasper briefly only to release him as Rameses launched himself onto her back clawing and biting as much as he could as Cas tried to get a hold of him.
"Are you just going to stand there and do nothing?" Seth's voice asked from beside me, whipping my head to the side confirmed that he really was here.
"Help us please!" I pleaded if anyone was strong enough to fight Cas it was Seth.
"I told you I wouldn't be doing you anymore favors, that doesn't mean I won't offer advice." Seth replied with a chuckle.
"What!" I asked there was no way we could fight Cas, Danny was out for the count, Jasper was a child again and only getting smaller, and I didn't like Rameses odds against a monster nearly forty times his size.
"Rameses is your familiar, his form is dictated by his source materials, that being the statue which was made from a cat's bones, and more importantly your magic. Might I remind you your magic is change, if you don't like his odds change them." Seth replied before disappearing in a swirl of red sand.
That was his advice, change the odds! I could barely do any magic and what little magic I had done was random and mostly not intentional. If Rameses was bigger it wouldn't be such a bad match up, Cas was wiry and fast and although strong enough to hurt a human against a big cat she probably wouldn't fair quite as well.
That was it change, if I could change him into a big cat he had a chance. I focused on the growing tightness of anxiety in my chest, the same build up that had happened during the family argument and pushed it all to Rameses through the mental link while trying to imagine the image of Rameses as a tiger. I just had to hope that it wasn't destructive energy I was channeling into him that would just make things worse.
Cas tossed off Rameses as he was momentarily surprised I had to assume from the energy rushing into him. He lay on the ground for a moment and I feared that I had made things worse when Rameses started getting bigger but he definitely wasn't a tiger instead as he grew his front legs became heavily muscled, his fangs grew into sabers, and his tail shortened into a bob. I recognized what he was from our time in the museum, the massive black cat he had become was a Sabertooth cat.
Cas stared stunned for a moment and Rameses took advantage charging forward, Cas stood her ground as Rameses leaned back on his shorter but stocky back legs and started hitting her with paw swipe after paw swipe each landing heavily with loud thuds like a heavyweight boxer. Cas tried to duck under Rameses strikes only for him to lean forward again bringing his weight down onto her with a sickening crackling sound as she screamed. Cas might have been hurt but she started clawing at Rameses belly while Rameses was trying to wrestle the angry wendigo into submission.
What Cas had forgotten was that she wasn't just fighting Rameses. Jasper had stayed underneath the fighting pair when he was dropped trying to avoid the water raining down from overhead and what had gathered on the ground. Jasper saw an opportunity as Rameses pressed Cas downwards, he flared despite being in his wisp form burning Cas' stomach and elicited a fearful scream from Cas. She quickly switched from trying to beat Rameses to trying to escape from Rameses who wasn't tolerating any of it.
Jasper was soon zipping over back into his lantern as Rameses drove Cas closer and closer to the ground. I could hear sirens out side but it hadn't registered at first as I was more surprised by Cas changing back into her human shape which surprised Rameses as well as she gave a smirk before letting out an ear piercing scream.
We soon found out why as Rameses was blasted aside by a torrent of water that had come from a firefighter's house standing in the doorway. I heard the shots before I realized I was moving as police officers took aim at Rameses who moved into the smoke of the smoldering flames to avoid their bullets.
"Rameses the back exit quickly!" I told him mentally not wanting the police or Cas to hear as I pulled Danny along with me as I headed for the emergency exit.
