Chapter 18
"It worked. She passed out after babbling stupid things after she saw Alex in his real form." A voice spoke over the phone, walking back and forth with the leather boots clicking on the ground.
"Good. Visit me by this week. There is more to do."
"Okay, I will."
The line went blank. The footsteps retreated and the only sound was of the singing crickets.
---------------------------------------
The sun rose brightly. Lana rubbed her eyes and yawned while sitting up. She walked out of the tent to find Beth and Cody cooking. She rubbed her back and hugged them from behind.
"I had a strange dream last night. I almost freaked out! It seemed so real like a fantasy movie...Alex turning into a wolf." She laughed as she rubbed her back. "My back hurts suddenly...."
The two stared at each other when Hailey called her sister, "Hey squid! You woke up already? Lana turned, smiling annoyingly at her sister but her smile was taken over by the horror appearing on her face.
"How...how did you...?" Lana asked Hailey, pointing at her injured left arm.
"I don't remember anything. They said I got hurt by a tree." Lana snapped her head towards Beth and Cody, who were looking back at them.
"Tell me it was a dream...and that...Alex....he is not...you all are not..."
David walked up to them and slowly nodded his head.
"Lana, we have to tell you more about it. Don't rush to conclusions. You don't know anything. David spoke carefully.
"Do you have more to say? I saw enough yesterday and I don't think I need to know more because I remember everything." She spat out each word with betrayal clear in her eyes.
Hailey ran up to Lana and held her hand, "What?"
"They're not humans, Hailey. They're murderers."
"It's upto you to decide after you listen to what we have to say." Alex appeared behind her and walked up beside David.
"Are you all playing a game or something? Can someone tell me what's going on? Hailey looked puzzled.
"Go ahead then. Explain what you want to." Lana bluttered out.
The forest stood with light sound of the breeze through the leaves.
Alex sighed and looked straight at Lana.
"I'm the alpha, the leader of the Werewolf clan. We're decades old community which was set up by a great man Mr. Campbell. But due to his sudden disappearance, this community..."
"Get straight to the point."
Alex sighed, "Okay. The thing is we didn't kill your parents. I don't know what you remember but it's not true. We tried to save you instead. There are others who wanted to kill you and your parents but they failed to kill you."
"So, who are they?"
"You know them well. It's Liam Fonseka and his brother Ethan. They're dangerous and wanted to kill..."
"Don't lie! They're not like that. I remember clearly everything that happened so you can't talk me out. Listen, I don't know what you're planning but just leave us out of this. If Liam wanted to kill me, he wouldn't have saved me when I was attacked at David's house. How did anyone other than you all know I was staying at his house? I have nothing more to say. Leave us alone."
Lana switched on her phone. Hailey stood there shocked and in dilemma. Her face was pale.
Lana dialed Ethan's number. She pulled Hailey behind her and asked her to talk to him and request him to pick them up.
"Umm....Ethan? It's Hailey. Can you...umm...pick me and Lana from the picnic spot please? I'll send you our location. Yeah. Okay."
Hailey whispered to Lana, " Is it true? They killed....?How did you...?"
Lana nodded her head disappointedly. "Yes, Hailey. Yesterday something unexplainable happened. You weren't your own self. You were fighting..."
Lana glared behind her as she started at the group and turned towards Hailey and continued, "Alex. Maybe he attacked you first and you fought back. But you attacked m-...He might have wanted to kill us and took this opportunity. I've never seen you fighting someone in my whole life."
"Oh my god! But how are you sure Alex killed your parents?" Hailey gasped. She hugged her tightly.
"I can never forget those eyes which pushed me off the cliff that night. Since I met them, I somehow felt familiar with them and after what happened last night, I'm sure of my judgement. If he didn't kill my parents then how does he know about my parents? It's the same silver-furred wolf with golden eyes."
Hailey shiverred and glanced behind her. They were calling them back. Beth walked towards Lana and stood in front of them.
"Can't you trust me either? I've a different story to tell...." She looked at Lana and Hailey intently and fixed her gaze on Lana.
