Chapter 16
Rebecca collected the files from the front desk and handed them to Ethan. She turned around to leave but Ethan called, "Bec..."
Rebecca stopped on her tracks and turned around to sceptically.
"Trust me." Ethan said in a reliable tone.
She sighed and closed the door behind her. Years have passed. She recalled when she was a kid and was looked after by Liam and Ethan. They had to. She was their little sister. Liam, a year older than Ethan was four years ahead of Rebecca. But ever since they shifted to Manhattan, she had never been called 'Bec' by them...as if she was a part of them as well as abandoned at the same time. Liam was just a CEO for outer show. The company was backed and managed completely by Ethan.
She knew Hailey since her birth. She followed Lana from the mouth of her impending death which never came at the mountain road. She watched her being taken to her new home...new family. A small family of parents and a sister....how happy she was when she grew up with them. She compared her own life to Lana's. And within a year, it was time for her to shift to Manhattan with her brother's.
She was so lost in thoughts that she barely realised she was standing on the rooftop, facing the huge city. She felt the breeze flowing in a comforting way as she tried to release her stress for the moment.
"Taking breaks, aren't you?"
Rebecca replied without turning around, "I'll be back . You can return to your office."
Liam walked and stood beside her without looking at her.
"You have to manage both Swetlana and Hailey's positions. They won't be back until three more days."
"It's not new to me. I did that job everyday till you decided to hire them. I'll get going now."
Rebecca left without waiting for a reply.
Though Liam felt a little bad for Rebecca, he soon overcame it and called up Ethan.
"I don't think she'll be easy but I'm sure she won't go against us. The memories will bind her with us. Did that woman call you yet?"
"No. But she will. Do the rest of the paperworks. I'll leave for today. See you at home, brother."
"We will."
Liam stuffed his phone into his blazer pocket.
The sun was down but it wasn't dark. The city brightened up with street lights, resembling stars in a dark sky.
Liam closed the roof door and entered the elevator and pressed the button with number 8 on it. The door closed as quietly as the cat walked away from the rooftop.
