Chapter 32
That night I gave some serious thought to Rose and Rhys's request. In all honesty I couldn't find a good reason to deny it, but I didn't want to curse my sister and brother in law with such a long life span.
I sighed out loud for what must have been the hundredth time tonight. "What's wrong?" Gabe asked me, looking up from the book she was reading in my bed.
"Nothing major." I answered. "I'm just thinking about my brother and sister."
A knowing smile snaked it's way across Gabe's lips. "Are you that conflicted about turning them into your Ethereal children?" I wondered how Gabe seemed to know exactly what was on my mind without any prompts at all.
"Honestly yes. I know that they want to, but I'm not sure those two really understand that they will live as long as me. I'm going to live for a VERY long time according to everything I've ever heard about Ethereals. To me it's a curse that I wouldn't wish upon anyone." I voiced my concerns.
Gabe was silent for a minute or so, thinking about her answer. "While it's true that living that long can be a curse. I think that the curse is lessened, if not almost completely nullified, by having loved ones that will always be there with you. You have the unique gift of getting to spend that ridiculous amount of time not only with a person you love, but with an entire family. I think Rhys and your sister have realized this and want to be part of your forever family."
I open my mouth to argue, only to realize that I didn't have a counter argument to Gabe's statement. So looking like an idiot, I closed my mouth again and thought some more.
"Fine." I said after a few minutes. "You've made your point. I'll let them know to prepare to be changed tomorrow night." I sighed in defeat before exiting my room in search of my sister, Rhys was at work again so Rose could tell him.
I found Rose in her room and entered after knocking. I told her what the decision I had come to which earned me a "OMG thank you!" From Rose while she tackled me into a hug, needless to say she was ecstatic.
"Just make sure Rhys doesn't have work tomorrow night or on Saturday." I informed Rose before escaping her excited affection and retreating to my room and Gabe.
"So how did she take the news?" Was the first thing out of Gabe's mouth as I entered the room looking like I'd just escaped a war zone.
"She's ecstatic." I informed Gabe with a straight face while my hair and clothes obviously told the story of how excited Rose had been.
Gabe chuckled before patting the bed next to her and turning on the TV for us to watch. I still had homework to do that was due tomorrow but it could wait until later. TV with Gabe sounded like a much better idea at the moment.
Gabe put some stand up comedy from Netflix on and we started to watch.
About halfway through the show my sides were hurting and I took a peak at Gabe, only to find her frowning and obviously not laughing.
"What's wrong?" I asked Gabe.
"Nothing." Gabe answered before pausing to think before expanding on her previous comment. "I'm just a little jealous how amazing your family is. They would literally choose to live almost forever just to be there for you. I wish I had a family like that."
"You do." I told Gabe firmly as she raised one of her eyebrows at me. "This is your family now. No one here considers you as any less than that. I know you don't really trust vampires with good reason, but everyone in this house would put their life on the line for you."
Gabe burst out into tears at my declaration and I quickly wrapped her into a hug while making circles on her back with my hands in a comforting manner.
"Welcome to the crazy family." I joked to lighten the mood. Which only caused Gabe to laugh while she was still crying. It was honestly one of the funniest things I'd ever seen.
"Do you really mean everything you said?" Gabe asked once she'd finally calmed down.
"Everyone means it." I told her. "You've been a part of this family for a while in everyone's eyes after all."
Gabe teared up again just as Rose came to call us for dinner.
Upon seeing Rose, Gabe rushed out of my room and gave her a massive hug. Before proceeding to find everyone in the house and do the same to them.
There were lots of confused looks until I explained that Gabe has just realized that she has a family again.
Over dinner we discussed the plans for Rose and Rhys tomorrow. We all agreed that tomorrow evening was the best idea. Rhys has Saturday off to give him a little time to adjust.
"It's a pretty easy adjustment." Audrey was explaining to Rose. "At first you don't even realize that anything has changed. Until you feel the family bond pulling everyone together or Violet decides to start passing her abilities around."
Audrey has a massive smile on her face while she explained. She was obviously excited that Rose and Rhys were joining our family.
Jamie looked at Gabe and asked her a question. "Have you given any thought to becoming an Ethereal as well Gabriel?"
Gabe almost instantly replied. "I've given it a great deal of thought actually." She admitted. "I've come to the decision that while it sounds amazing, I'm honestly still have to many scars from vampires to consider basically becoming one."
I grabbed Gabe's hand under the table to lend her my support.
"That's perfectly ok." I said before Jamie could respond. "However if you change your mind then know that we welcome you with opens arms.
Everyone at the tables nodded and said variations of 'yes' and 'of course' to back me up.
Gabe's eyes were becoming watery as she promised everyone that she would continue to think about it.
The rest of dinner and the evening passed quietly and mainly consisted of Leah, Audrey and Jamie coaching Rose and Rhys (when he came home from work) on what to expect after they became Ethereal children.
I must say that I'm proud of my Ethereal family and how they're dealing with gaining new members.
I awoke Friday morning to find that Gabe had once again snuggled into my while I was asleep. I was currently the little spoon.
I'm not even sure when Gabe last slept in her own bed. Not that I'm complaining, waking up to someone snuggling into you is a pretty amazing feeling.
I'm still so amazed at how Gabe staying in my room and bed every night just seemed to happen without any discussion. Although I must admit that I wouldn't want her anywhere else now.
I would have stayed like that, but we both had morning classes so I rolled over and gently woke Gabe up.
After breakfast we all headed out for our short day at university. Thank god for Friday's being a half day at this uni for all of us.
I was also glad that we didn't see Alex or Isabella the entire day.
After the relatively short day we all went home to prepare for this evening.
At dinner last night everyone has agreed to make a small ceremony out of it. Which meant there would be a celebration and lots of food. Not that I was complaining, all I had to do was put up some decorations and feed Rose and Rhys my blood.
That afternoon while everyone was running around preparing food, I got to work on the living area. I pulled all the sofas to the side and moved a mattress into the middle of the now clear room. Finally I covered the top of the mattress in towels in case blood ended up spilling.
By the time I was done it was late afternoon and some amazing smells were coming out of the kitchen.
The plan was to have dinner before starting on the newly dubbed 'ceremony'.
So I went up to my room and got changed into a beautiful black dress that was low cut and came down to my knees. The bottom part of the dress fanned out when I moved. All in all it was one of my favorite pieces of clothing.
I went back downstairs to find everyone dishing up the feast they'd all prepared. There was enough food here to feed us all for a week and my mouth was already watering for it.
Once everyone changed into semi respectable clothes the feast began.
It had been a while since everyone including Mia had sat down to eat together. It reminded me how much everyone here meant to me.
Leah and Audrey were teasing an obviously nervous Rose and Rhys while Gabe watched them in silence. Mia and Jamie were discussing school and her new boyfriend.
All to quickly, dinner ended and the main event for that evening began. We all headed into the lounge room and formed a rough circle around Rose, Rhys and myself.
"Well I'm not one for big speeches, so why don't we get started." I joked as Rose and Rhys took this as their cue to strip down to shorts and a sports bra for Rose. We'd decided that since this involved blood, the less clothes they had on to destroy the better.
After that was done Rhys stepped forward and began. "As you know I'm Rhys Charr and today I would like to ask to officially join the four of you as an Ethereal child." The response to this was an immediate yes from the three Ethereal children and hugs from all of them. Then it was Rose's turn.
"Hi, my name is Rose Charr and I would like to ask permission to have you as my family for as long as we all live." The response to Rose's question was the same as Rhys's except she got a massive hug from both Leah and Audrey.
Once everyone was settled again I continued. "As you know this is a lifelong commitment that can never be undone and there is a good chance that you will live for a very long time. So I offer you one final chance to say no."
Both Rose and Rhys immediately shook their heads and said "No."
"Then I accept the both of you as my Ethereal children. Who would like to go first?" I asked.
Surprisingly, Rhys's hand shot up like he was a student in a classroom who knew the answer to the question that teacher had just asked.
"Ok, Rhys it is then." I laughed as Rhys went to stand on the mattress in case he reacted differently to how Audrey had and collapsed.
I extended my fangs and used them to cut my wrist and focused on not letting the deep cut heal yet. As I waited for the blood to pool I reminded Rhys on what he had to do. "Remember to drink as much of this as you can even though it won't be the best taste ever and once your down lie down my blood will force you to sleep for a while."
He nodded in understanding so I moved my bleeding wrist my to Rhys's mouth as he quite confidently wrapped his lips around the wound and began drinking as much of my blood as he could get.
Thank god he'd shaved off his stubble before this. Having all those hairs digging into my arm would have been so uncomfortable.
I didn't take very long before he had to stop and cough. Rhys was already looking woosy so I let my healing ability go to free as Jamie and Audrey helped Rhys lie down and cleaned the leftover blood from his face and chest. Rhys was unconscious before he was even on the mattress.
I cleaned my wrist up and noticed that it look less than a minute for the wound to completely disappear and all the blood I'd lost to be replaced. I had no idea how my body did that, but it was pretty amazing.
"Rose, you're turn." I said gently to my sister.
Rose stood on the mattress next to where her husband was sleeping and looked visibly nervous as she waited for me to finish cleaning my wrist.
"Are you sure you want to do this?" I asked Rose again as I saw her unease.
"Yes I'm sure." Came her instant answer. "I'm just nervous of the unknown."
"Ok then." I smiled at Rose as I once again extended my fangs and cut my wrist.
I waited for the blood to pool again as I gave the same words to Rose that I did to Rhys. The only difference being that Rose was visibly nervous and a little pale. But she was also determined to see this through.
Once done I left up my wrist to Rose. I left it far enough away that Rose would have to make the choice to move to it. I didn't want Rose to feel like I was pressuring her, ever.
Despite her unease, Rose leaned forward without hesitation and put my bleeding wrist in her mouth. She made a face that told us how unpleasant my blood really was but continued to drink it anyway.
She drank until she couldn't stomach anymore and moved my wrist away.
Just like Rhys, Rose needed help to get down onto the mattress without falling and was asleep as soon as her head hit the pillow. I wiped my sister clean of blood before lifting her off the mattress as Jamie did the same with Rhys.
We tucked the pair into bed as everyone got started on the cleaning. Once that was finally done we all retired for the night. It may not be overly late, but it had been a big day for everyone.
