Chapter 23 - [Aathiray]
Jacobs a Raakshyan. He is. No. He can't be. Impossible. That's just crazy! How can he be a Raakshyan if his parents are human?
I've been arguing with myself for the last few days and I still couldn't believe that he was a Raakshyan. But I was suspicious. He hadn't come to school for the last week and Jacob wasn't the type of person who skipped school.
Cecile wasn't at school too, which added to my suspicion. Actually, I was worried now. Where could those two have gone?
It was the weekend now, and sadly, I had a lot to do. I had a project to do for every one of my four classes and they were all big ones.
I sat on my desk and cut out the stars that I drew. I've been working on my World Mythology project for the past three hours and I'm still not even close to done.
This is what happens when you procrastinate.
I dropped my head onto my desk and sighed. Where was Kero? He's been gone for so long... I was starting to worry.
I sighed loudly and closed my eyes. I was dead tired. Maybe I'm just thinking too much. I need some more sleep. I thought. For the last few days I've been spending most of my time thinking and then the rest of my time doing homework, which meant hardly any sleep.
This was definitely not good for me.
But why would Jacob do this? How? How could he possibly be a Raakshyan? Kero wouldn't lie, never! But none of this was believable.
Sleep... I thought. I wanna sleep.
I got up off my chair and walked to my bed, collapsing onto to it and falling into a deep sleep.
When I woke up, it was dark outside. I looked at the time, it was two in the morning. I sighed loudly when I realized that I would have to spend another day doing homework but then froze. Something seemed different.
I shook my head and got off my bed, the second I stepped out of my room, my brother walked out of the washroom. He smiled at me. "Good morning, sleepy head."
I smiled. "Why are you up so early?"
"I have to study... you know me, I learn better in the morning and..." His voice drifted off as he looked carefully at me. "Aathiray... are you wearing contact lenses?" He asked.
I raised my eyebrows. "What? Of course not, I don't even have any."
My brother rubbed his eyes and then looked back at me. "Then why the hell are your eyes blue?"
"What?!"
"Either go to sleep or do your studying quietly!" I heard my dad yell. "I'm trying to sleep!"
"What?" I asked, lowering my voice.
"Aathy... when did you get blue contacts? Dad's going to kill you! Remember what happened when you asked for green contacts?"
I frowned. My dad hated the idea of contacts. "Do you want to screw up your eyes?!" He would yell. "Green! Why would you want green? Because it looks nice?! Do you go to school to study or do you go because you want boys to start following you?!"
I never asked for contacts again after that.
But what was Aathavan talking about. "Aathavan... are you even awake? I'm not wearing contact lenses."
"What, so you expect me to believe that your eyes are naturally blue when I've known you for your entire life?"
I frowned and walked into the bathroom. I looked into the mirror and let out a little scream.
He was right, my eyes were blue... but not a normal blue. They were the same blue as Kero's eyes were and they made my face look, inhumanly, pretty.
"Ohmygosh! I'm turning into a Raakshyan too!" I squealed.
"What?!" My brother half yelled.
I heard my parent's bed creak.
"Out! Out!" I said as I quickly pushed my brother out of the washroom and closed the door.
"What is wrong?" I heard my dad ask Aathavan.
"N-nothing.... Sorry dad..." Aathavan said, stuttering.
"Why are you two up so early?"
"I'm studying... Aathy... needed to go to the bathroom."
My dad sighed. "Alright... then go study, but try to get some sleep, son. Aathiray, get to bed, alright?"
"Yes dad!" I squeaked. I then held my breath and waited for them to leave. I then quickly ran out and into my room.
What the hell? I screamed in my head as my heart raced. What's going on?
My brother opened the door and walked in. He quickly closed it and looked at me. "What did you just say?" He hissed in a low voice.
I placed my hands on my extremely hot cheeks as the fear overwhelmed me. "I'm turning into a Raakshyan too..."
"Too?" He asked.
I nodded. "Jacob... Jacob's a Raakshyan..."
"What?!"
"But how is this happening?" I felt the tears fill my eyes. Of course, I always thought being a Raakshyan would be awesome, but for some reason, I was terribly frightened. Was changing into a Raakshyan going to hurt? Could I possibly die? What were my parents going to say?
Aathavan was shaking his head. "Impossible. Impossible. Absolutely impossible." He repeated. "You cannot be turning into a Raakshyan! How could that even happen? Don't you have to have it in your blood?"
"Jacob doesn't! But somehow he changed!"
"Call Keroshan! Where the hell is he? Call him and tell him to fix whatever the hell is going on!"
"Kero's in Raakshya!" I squeaked.
He bit his lip. "Call Aunty Seretha!"
"No! She can't know! She'll tell mom and dad!"
"Then call Chirpy, damn it!" My brother looked more stressed out then I was.
But calling Chirpy was a good idea. I grabbed my cell phone and dialed my auntie's number. That's where he stays, but hopefully, my aunty doesn't pick up.
After a few ring, I heard Veenaray pick up. "What?" She said, in a really grumpy voice.
"Veenaray! It's Aathy!" I said.
"Yeah, I know. What?"
"Can you give the phone to Chirpy?" I asked.
"Why do you need to talk to him at three in the morning?" She asked. I heard footsteps, I guessed that she was walking to Chirpy's room.
"It's an emergency!"
"Hey, Chirpy!" I heard her say.
"Huh? What?" Chirpy sounded sleepy.
"It's Aathy. She wants to talk to you." Veenaray said.
"Oh... Hello?"
"Chirpy! Please, please, please, please come over here to my place now!"
"Is something wrong?" He asked, sounding worried and more awake.
"Yes... I think..."
There was a pause. "I'll be there in five minutes."
"Thank you Chirpy!"
"No problem." He put down the phone.
I looked at my brother after I closed my cell phone. "He'll be here in five minutes."
Thankfully, Chirpy flew in through the window rather than ringing the doorbell but he gasped when he saw me. "You got contacts?" He asked.
"No!"
Chirpy raised an eyebrow. "Then why are your eyes..."
"I'm turning into a Raakshyan Chirpy!"
Chirpy's eyebrows shot up. "No you aren't!"
"I'm not?!"
My brother sighed in relief.
"No... you can't be!"
"Really?"
Chirpy nodded. "You know how every Raakshyan child is almost exactly the same as a human child, right?" he asked.
I nodded.
"Well, the only difference is that Raakshyan children have a special cell that stays dormant somewhere in their brain. When a Raakshyan child is ready to transform, the cell is activated and then it flows down into the liver, where it multiplies, just like how the malaria disease in humans multiply. And then, the cells travel through the Raakshyan child's bloodstream, attaches itself to the red blood cells and then they enter the cell. After entering, the blood cells of the Raakshyan start changing completely. That is the first step to the transformation." He said. "The reason why I'm saying this is because, when this is happening, the Raakshyan has a very, very high fever. They get really weak and then the next steps start. Next, the Raakshyan child brain changes, causing headaches. The blood then gets thinner, and that makes the Raakshyan look slightly skinnier and they feel lighter on their feet. Their skin gets slightly thicker and their muscles get stronger. Their bones harden so that they are much, much stronger then human bones are and their vision gets clearer and their hearing gets better. And basically, they become a hundred times stronger than they were before."
My mouth was open in shock.
"Aathy, do you have a high fever?" He asked.
"No."
"Do you feel weak?"
"No."
"Do you have a headache?"
"No."
"Do you feel lighter on your feet? Or do your muscles hurt? Or do your bones hurt? Or does your sight seem exceptionally better? Or does your hearing feel exceptionally stronger?"
"No, no, no, no and no."
"So you probably aren't turning into a Raakshyan." He smiled.
"Then what's up with the blue eyes?!"
"Exactly. You still haven't explained why her eyes are blue. She isn't wearing contacts!" Aathavan said.
Chirpy hesitated. "I honestly don't know..." He looked carefully at me. "But they look like... Kero's eyes..."
"What the hell did he do to my sister?!" Aathavan asked, angrily.
Chirpy held his hands up. "I'm sure it's nothing big!"
I walked to my mirror and rubbed my eyes. When I looked back, nothing changed.
"Do you see anything... I dunno... strange?" Chirpy asked.
I looked around but saw nothing. "No."
I suddenly started to hear tingly noises. "Do you hear that?" I asked as I stopped breathing.
"What?" Aathavan asked.
"Shh..."
I listened as the tingly sound continued.
And then, there was a giggle.
