Chapter Three
Gail and Bella walked into Central Park Zoo at the early hours of 6am. Gail had to prepare the routes, and what to say to the visitors. She also helped feed the animals as well. The human was immensely curious as to what happened with Bella, but she didn't want to press the child. She'd been though a lot.
"Can we go and see the she-wolf?" Bella asked, holding Gail's hand. She was bouncing around in excitement, her brown hair springing up and down.
Gail laughed at her enthusiasm. "You can ask her keeper, Delilah. She looks after her."
Bella's green eyes lit up, beaming. "Does she have a name?"
Gail nodded. "We call her Willow, because she was found sleeping under a willow tree." Gail explained which made Bella nod her head.
"Come on, let's go help the others, okay?" Gail said, as they made their way through the back entrance of the Zoo.
Bella followed Willow's keeper, Delilah to the employee part of the zoo. Only workers were allowed back here, no visitors.
Bella's green eyes looked in wonder at all the enclosures. They were filled with different animals from all over the world, mostly American though. Bella brushed her luscious brown hair back, as Delilah stopped in front of the very last enclosure.
The old woman had streaks of grey throughout her blonde hair, her blue eyes filled with wisdom and knowledge that Bella wouldn't know until she reached her teens, grabbed the baton, just in case Willow struck. Delilah stopped Bella a few metres away, and walked up to the cage.
"Bella," she whispered, beckoning her forward. "Willow's asleep. You can come and look at her if you want."
Bella beamed, before skipping over to the older woman. Delilah smiled, and put a protective arm around the little girl, as they gazed at the female wolf.
Her huge head was in her dirty paws, her blue eyes closed off by her light eyelids. Her silver fur glittered in the little light there was, but Bella was still marvelled at her. You could easily identify her through the fake trees and planted ferns. The walls had been painted to look like the environment, but you could easily identify that it was fake.
Delilah looked at Bella, before capturing her gaze. "We found Willow at the bottom of a weeping willow against a river in Central Park. The keepers that found her were taking a romantic walk when they found her. She was thin, exhausted, and desperate for something to eat." Delilah said.
Bella listened intently, engrossed in the story. "They took her in, but when she woke up in the cage, she panicked. She was wild. It took a few years for the keepers to calm her in our presence."
Delilah sighed, and Bella looked at Willow. The light breeze from the fan ruffled her fur, but she stayed asleep.
"She's alone." Bella whispered, eyes breaking at the sight of the wolf. Delilah turned to the child in surprise. "It's just her; no one else knows what she is going through."
Delilah, still in shock, turned her old self to the wolf. She gasped when she noticed that her electric blue eyes had opened, locking with Bella. Willow raised her giant wolf head, muzzle up, a sign of dominance. Bella bowed her head, making Delilah frown.
"You don't have to bow to Willow. She's just a wolf." Delilah whispered, glancing at the caged animal.
Willow's lips pulled back, a snarl escaping her. Delilah scowled at the wild dog, pointing her baton. "You will behave Willow, or we will hit you again!"
Willow stopped snarling, but her teeth were still bare.
Delilah stood, her old knees cracking, and looked down at Bella. "Stay with her while I get her feed." She whispered gently, glaring at the wolf.
When Delilah left, Bella sat down in front of the cage, her legs crossed. Her innocent green eyes looked into the blue ones of the wolf, but she felt no need of submission anymore.
"My name is Isabella, but everyone calls me Bella." She started. The wolf stopped baring her teeth, and she listened to Bella carefully. "I'm from Alpha Silver's pack, the people that were here the other day? James Silver is my Alpha, and his mate, Melanie Woods, is my Luna."
Bella tilted her head back, biting her lip, and thought about what else to say. "I ran away from them." She whispered, causing Willow to snap her head to her in shock.
"I overheard Alpha Silver and Luna Woods talking with the Beta, Mitchell Rivers. He said that you murdered a whole pack, that you were a rogue." Bella said, looking at Willow. The wolf growled, spinning around to the back of the enclosure. She scratched at the ground, her clean claws sharpening.
"I don't believe him." Bella said. "I don't think that was you."
Willow looked up at Bella, pride filling her bright eyes. "The Alpha believed the Beta, though. He isn't going to free you."
Willow's eyes cracked, tears filling them. She dipped her head, nose pressed against the wooden ground. She breathed out, the dried leaves fluttering away from the wolf like a scared animal.
Bella hesitantly pressed her hands to the bars, to find that these ones didn't burn her. She smiled in sympathy at the silver wolf.
"It's why I ran. You helped me when my hand hurt, and I'm going to help you. I'm going to stay and help you get through this." Bella said.
Willow raised her head in shock at the young werewolf. She was more mature than she looked. The she-wolf nodded her head in understanding.
Bella clapped her little hands together, making the big wolf wince at the noise. "So!" She said, beaming at the big wolf. "Is your name really Willow?"
The wolf smiled, and shook her head.
Bella tapped her chin. "Hmm. So you can't talk, so it's yes or no questions!"
The wolf sat on her hind legs, her forelegs straight, like a dog waiting for a bone.
"Does it start with A?" The little girl asked, big green eyes looking up at the big wolf.
The wolf shook her head.
"B?"
Another shake.
"C? D? E? F? G? H? I? J? K? L? M? N? O? P? Q? R? S?-" Bella ratted off, and the wolf nodded her head when she came to the letter S.
"S?" Bella double checked. 'S' nodded her head.
Bella tapped her chin again, her eyebrows coming together.
"Sophie? Sarah? Sally? Susan?" Bella asked, leaning forward with excitement.
But, the giant wolf shook her head.
Bella pouted. "I'll just call you Silver. Get it? Because it's the start of your name, and the colour of your fur!!" Bella explained.
The silver wolf's blue eyes glinted with amusement, but she nodded in understanding.
Bella was about to talk about her situation with Carter, when Delilah returned.
"You okay Bella?" She asked.
Bella nodded. "Yes, I found out her name! It's not Willow, it starts with S! I'm calling her Silver."
Delilah raised her eyebrow at the accusation. "Bella, sweetheart, we know her as Willow. We can't just change her name. You may call her Silver if you wish."
Delilah eyed the big wolf, which was glaring at her. Her instinct told her to run, and a wise woman as herself wouldn't have to be told twice.
She grabbed Bella's arm, hauling her up. "Come on," She said, placing the food in the allocated area. "Let's go back to Gail and help her with brochures and stuff, okay?"
Bella pouted, her big green eyes widening with the puppy dog face. "But I want to stay with Silver!" She whimpered.
Delilah's eyes softened, but a hard edge was placed in the corner. "I can't allow you to stay here Bella; you'll get in the way with the other keepers coming through. You can visit Wil– Silver later."
The brunette girl looked at Silver one more time, before following the old woman back down the corridors.
Gail was waiting at the check-in, her tour guide outfit on. Holding her hand, was little Bella. She watched with curiosity as people flooded through the gates. Tourists, Businessmen, and locals walked through the huge gates, and Bella couldn't keep the smile off her face. Many people looked at the beautiful little girl, her wolf traits making her hair shine, eyes glow, and teeth sparkle white.
They couldn't help but walk towards the little girl.
Gail smiled at the amount of people that came, and taking a deep breath, jumped into her prepared speech.
"Welcome to Central Park Zoo! My name is Abigail, and I am a tour guide. This is my assistant, Bella, who will be accompanying me today. If you would like a tour, then please do say so. They are $25 per person." Gail said in a loud, clear voice.
"We're going to see Silver!" Bella said excitingly. "She's the wolf here!"
The tourists immediately came, handing Gail money for the tour. Gail took a couple of steps back, shocked, and started to collect the money as quickly as possible.
Just before she was about to set off with the large crowd, she bent down to Bella.
"You are my lucky charm Bella." Gail whispered, but Bella's enhanced senses could easily hear. "I should keep you around."
Bella smiled. "I'd like that."
"No she wouldn't." A male said within the crowd. They parted, letting Bella see who it was that spoke. When she saw who it was, she frowned, and gripped Gail's hand fiercely.
"B-Beta Mitchell." She whispered, so only he could hear.
"Your family is worried Isabella." He said, taking a step forward. "They want you home."
Bella scoffed. Her loyalty to her pack faded when they wouldn't help Silver. "That isn't home anymore."
Mitchell smirked, before he reached out, and grabbed Bella's arm. She screamed, but no one dared attack the 6ft tall man built like a tank.
But Gail wasn't falling for him.
"You let her go!" She cried, running after him. "SECURITY!"
Mitchell whipped around and struck her on the jaw. Bella screamed again as she watched Gail fall. Her scream triggered the inner instinct to help a child, the one you get when you see someone hurt.
Everyone stood, blocking the way for him to get through.
Mitchell smiled. "She is part of my family, so she comes with ME!" He growled, but no one flinched or moved at his tone.
The tears on Bella's face held them there.
Gail groaned, before sitting up. "She ran from you." She whispered, but his enhanced hearing heard. "She ran from her family, and she came here. She's not part of your family anymore, she's a part of ours."
Mitchell growled, the humans hearing his unhuman sound. He spun around to face Gail again, Bella still kicking and screaming at him.
Just as he was about to open his mouth, another growl echoed throughout the grounds. This time, Mitchell stopped moving. The people slowly moved out of the way, as the four-legged tank of silver made it's way through.
Silver's snarling made Mitchell turn and face the large wolf. He gulped, examining his opponent. She came up to his hip, her silver coat like a million dollar killer. Her blue eyes glowed with anger. If it was one thing about female wolves that Mitchell knew, never get between one and a child it's protecting.
She was protecting Bella.
Mitchell reached up with his hands, placing them on Bella's waist. Silver growled viciously as he touched her protected child, and Mitchell eased her off his shoulder.
Bella bit his hand, making him cringe. He didn't dare drop her when the female wolf was there. He set her down, and backed away from her.
Silver walked forward, her body lowered slightly, ready to pounce. She stepped over Bella protectively, and snarled at Mitchell.
He made his way to the main gates, the security only just arriving. They grabbed each of his hands, dragging him out of the Zoo.
"Isabella!" He yelled, but Bella stayed under Silver.
No one in the Zoo moved while Mitchell was being dragged away. When he finally was, people suddenly realised there was a wolf outside the cages.
Before they could scream, Delilah shot a tranquiliser into Silver's shoulder. She howled, before running off Bella quickly. The security guards from before took Bella out of the way as Silver stumbled around.
"Silver!" Bella cried, out of concern.
The silver she-wolf collapsed, but not before smiling at the little girl.
"How the bloody hell did she get out?!" The security guard shouted, as his partner moved to bind Silver.
"I don't know where she got the strength," Delilah said. "She heard Bella scream, and kept jumping at the bars before they broke. I ran out of the way as she charged through the corridors, before she came out here."
All the people were shocked to hear, but Bella smiled. She's a werewolf, of course she's strong. She thought.
