I was up on the roof again working on Bandit's dress when Poison came up. He sat next to me as he watched the sunrise. I didn't say anything and he sighed, which made me look over.
"Okay, I know it's Jet's secret but I know it's taking a toll on you," he said. "You didn't eat dinner last night and you didn't sleep. I should know, I could hear you tossing and turning. Whatever it is, it's clearly killing you."
"It's not that," I mumbled.
"What is it?" He asked.
I sighed. "At the motel I found something. It was a locket. It was my mom's locket. I hadn't seen it since that day."
"Oh, I-I'm sorry," he mumbled.
I nodded. "I guess I just kind of freaked out and that's why I haven't been acting right."
"I'm really sorry," he said. "I had no idea, I thought this was just about the secret."
I sighed and reached into my pocket, pulling out the locket. A rock fell out of my pocket while I grabbed it.
"What is this? Why do you have a rock in your pocket?" Poison asked with a small chuckle.
"Oh, it's the first rock Bandit gave me," I said.
"You carry it around with you?" He asked as he inspected it.
I shrugged. "It's my good luck charm."
Poison looked up and I realized our faces were inches apart. My heart was racing as I looked down at his lips. I leaned forward, pressing my lips against his.
Poison pushed me back as I stared at him with wide eyes.
"Shit, I-I'm sorry, I didn't mean to do that," I said.
Poison got up and left, climbing down off the roof. I wanted to scream at myself as I buried my face in my hands. Should I go after him? No, I probably shouldn't.
I tried to focus on my sewing as best as I could but layering tulle was hard when all you could think about was someone rejecting your kiss. I got frustrated but didn't want to get off the roof. What was I supposed to do now? He was probably already packing up to leave. Oh God, I can never leave this roof again.
The sun was fully up in the sky by this point but it was blocked out by clouds quickly rolling in. Sure enough, rain started sprinkling. I would have stayed up and just sat in the rain but I had Bandit's dress with me.
I got it all and went down into the diner. I didn't even look at Poison as I went into my room. I kicked off my shoes and continued to work on the dress. My hands were shaking and it took a bit to realize I was crying. My vision was getting more and more blurry until I couldn't make a proper stitch. I sighed, setting the fabric down.
"Fun!" Bandit called.
I sniffled. "Yeah, sweetheart?"
"Fun!" She called again.
I wiped my eyes and took a few deep breaths before I walked out.
"Hey, sweetie, what is it?" I asked, kneeling down in front of her.
She handed me the rock she had first given me. Poison must've accidentally brought it down with him.
"Oh thank you," I said. "I'm glad I didn't lose it."
She smiled and I stood up. Poison and I made eye contact before I walked back to my room. I laid down and stared at the white curtain. Poison came in, sitting at the end of my bed. I sat up, my back against the wall at the head of my bed.
"I'm sorry," I whispered. "I-I didn't mean to do that. I wasn't going to do anything."
Poison looked like he didn't know what to say as he spun his wedding ring around his finger. I sighed, my lip quivering. Oh God, why won't he say anything?
"I've been having a hard time recently," he finally said. "It's been a lot of an internal struggle, I suppose. There's feelings I've been trying to fight and ignore. I hadn't had feelings for someone since my wife died. And then you came alone and...I don't know. There's just something about the way you talk and laugh and care so deeply for Bandit. I feel like I'm cheating on my wife."
"I'm sorry," I said.
"And I love the way Bandit loves you," he said. "And how you two are always playing together and doing that thing where you show each other rocks. And I like that you bought her a tiara and are making her a dress and you carry around a rock she gave you. It's so sweet it's nauseating."
I didn't know what to say at this point as I stared at him.
"I guess what I'm trying to say is that I love how you care for my daughter," he said. "And I love that you've kind of taken it upon yourself to help take care of her. It's really sweet of you to care for her so deeply as you do when you don't have to. I love that you love her. And I've been trying to ignore the fact that I've been having these feelings for you because I don't know how to deal with them and I feel like I shouldn't be because I feel like I'm cheating or disrespecting my wife or something. I didn't think I would have feelings again after my wife so I didn't think ahead to what should happen when I do end up having feelings with someone."
I stared at him, my heart racing. He liked me too?
"I've never been into someone before," I said. "Th-that was my first kiss."
Poison looked over at me sadly before looking down.
"Shit, I'm sorry," he said. "I just ruined your first kiss."
"No, you didn't," I lied.
Poison looked up, smiling softly.
"Maybe I could make it up to you," he said.
He scooched down, his hand reaching up to caress my cheek. My throat closed, my stomach lurching as he slowly leaned forward. I thought I might throw up and would probably push him away if I could function enough to do so. His lips brushed against mine gently before he kissed me. A weird, embarrassing high pitched sort of squeal emitted from the back of my throat, making Poison chuckle.
His hand moved back to tangle into my hair as he kissed me a little harder. His lips parted and I copied him, our tongues brushing against each other. I didn't know what to do with my hands so I awkwardly put them on his shoulders. He pulled away slowly, giving me a soft smile.
"Did that make up for last time?" He asked.
I squeaked, my face burning red. Poison chuckled softly, holding my hand.
"I Don't Know exactly how this is going to work," he said.
"I-I'm...I don't..." I trailed off, trying to take a deep breath to gain my composure after that mind-numbing kiss. "I don't want you to feel like I want to replace Flash or make you forget her or anything like that. I don't really know what I'm doing, I've never felt like this before."
Poison nodded. "I-I don't want you to feel bad about this when I say this. But maybe it's best to not tell people about this. Or, well, we can tell but not do the kissing and holding hands in front of Bandit. I don't know how much she remembers of her mom or how she'll react."
"It's okay, I understand," I said.
"I'm sorry for pushing you away, I got scared," he said.
"It's okay," I said.
"I don't want to ever make you cry again," he mumbled.
Poison sat beside me against the wall, his side pressed against mine. I smiled, looking down at my lap. He cupped my cheek, turning my head to look at him. He kissed me gently, my heart pounding.
"Um, maybe you should get some food," he said. "You haven't eaten still, you're probably starving."
"Yeah, that's probably a good idea," I said.
We went out and I got the can of soup I never ate last night. I warmed it up and sat at a booth. It was pouring outside and B was up at the glass door looking out.
"Pay," she said.
"No, we can't play outside right now, B," Poison said.
She started crying and he picked her up, sitting in the booth next to me. I smiled at him before looking down. She sniffled and moved to stand between us on the bench. She leaned over to look and see what was in my bowl.
"Here, sit, sweetheart," I said.
She sat down and I fed her some bites of the soup.
"Okay, save some for yourself, this greedy little bug's already eaten," Poison said with a small laugh.
"It's okay," I said. "I can always make some more food."
She ate until she decided she was content and slipped down under the table before crawling out and over to Kobra. Jet sat down across from us, working on whatever contraption he was building now.
"Hey, Jet," I said quietly.
Ray looked up at me and frowned.
"What is it?" He asked.
I pulled the locket out of my pocket, setting it down on the table. Jet stared at it before picking it up gently.
"Bones had it," I said.
He opened it and found it was empty. The pictures must have been taken out a long time ago.
"How many carbons was this?" He asked.
"None," I said and he looked up at me in confusion. "I stole it."
"You stole it?" Poison asked in shock.
"Well, it belongs to my family so technically they stole it and I was just taking it back," I said.
"This is amazing," Ray said. "I thought we had lost it forever."
I nodded, looking down at the silver metal.
"I'm gonna make a case to put it in," he said. "We can hang it up over the wall of the bar."
"That would be amazing," I said.
Jet started measuring the necklace as Poison held my hand under the table.
