Chapter 7

They were in a marquee tent, tables of food and drink lined up against the walls. The white atmosphere was warming and comforting. Jack took a sip of champagne, tasting the bitter-sweet, fizzy drink. Around him, important men with important names were chatting among themselves, coming together in small groups, occasionally laughing at jokes given. So this is what they get up to.. He thought to himself. Drinking champagne, eating fancy food and having a good time. Keeping in the clear, away from the war, relaxing while men around them die in every direction..

"Pssst, Jack!" a voice, faint, called out to him. It came from behind. He looked. Only a wall.

"Jack, come outside!" it came again, more urgently this time. He could see where it came from; there was a gap in the tent which he could easily squeeze through. Abandoning his drink, Jack climbed through the gap into the field. Once he was out he looked around himself, trying to find the person who was calling for him. Whoever they were they were hiding from him, which was a bit odd considering that they were calling for him. He looked behind him. Nothing. Jack peered around the corner. Nowhere.

"Hello?" he half-whispered half-called out.

"I'm behind you." Jack spun to see Ara standing behind him. He breathed out, letting out his silent scream. He smiled at her.

"Hey Ara-"

"I need the Hologram back, now." Jack paused for a moment. The girl he was looking at was not joking, she had a look of panic in her eyes, something he has never seen before in her. He thought she was made of courage, made of stone. However here she was, fear taking over her character, taking over her courage, suffocating what ever control she had. Whatever had happened in the girls' camp had shook her up really badly, so badly that she came to him for closure. And for some reason, he felt glad that he was the person she trusted most, he was the person that she needed to talk to. He wanted to give her what she wanted, needed, but he could not, knowing what would happen if the men had found out what he had done. Jack sighed.

"I cannot give it to you." Ara's eyes, already glassy, started to spill. Her bottom lip started to tremble. She put her hand against her forehead and looked away from him, probably to hide her tears from him. In that moment, he had a sudden urge to comfort her, to hold her, to tell her that everything was going to be alright, even though he was the person causing the pain.

"Ara, I want to give it to you.. But I cannot, if I do-"

"Don't waste your breath!" Ara snapped.

"I cannot afford to loose anymore time" she ran off.

"Ara wait!" and Jack took off, following her wherever she was going.
