Chapter 24
Ara was being lead by Natasha. Where? She didn't know exactly, but it was safe to assume that she was being taken to a place to be questioned. For a couple of minutes they had been walking, step after step, corridor after corridor, until finally they stopped outside of a door for a few seconds.
"Last chance to tell the truth." Ara shook her head.
"I have told you the truth; I want peace to live again, and that can only be done if all of humanity is equal and loving!" Natasha shook her head in disappointment,
"I was hoping for more honesty than that." And with that she opened the door, beckoning Ara to come inside. Following Natasha, Ara looked around herself: it was a square box, still made of metal, with a rectangular window looking into another room. This other room was empty, except for a simple chair in the center, until a secret door opened and a brutal looking middle-aged woman came in pushing a stumbling, masculine person, with a sack on his head, in front of her, forcing him to sit into the chair. His hands were tied behind his back and his feet were bare from the loss of his shoes. Ara dreaded to see the face of the person under the bag, although she already knew the name of the prisoner. Tears welled in her eyes, but she had to stay strong and so she kept watching while the woman pulled the sack up and over the man's face. Jack's face was lit with bewilderment as he took in his surroundings. Rushing over to the window, Ara pressed the palms of her hands against the glass, wishing she was in the same room.
"Jack! Jack, are you okay?" she shouted. His head perked up, looking for her.
"Ara? Where are you?" Then it finally dawned on her that it was a one way window, so she could see him but he couldn't see her. A terrible thought crept into her mind. She turned to look at Natasha.
"What are you going to do with him?" Natasha shrugged, and a smile played at her lips.
"Nothing at this moment, but if you don't start talking that could change." Ara spat at the floor in front of her disgusting, polished black heels.
"Fuck you, you vile woman!" Suddenly a scream erupted from the room next door, belonging to the person trapped. Eyes wide in horror, Ara bashed her fists against the window, screaming Jack's name. His face was bright red and sweating and his eyes were screwed shut in pain. His mouth was open in an angry suffering, a dreadful sound escaping it. He continued to scream hysterically, experiencing the unknowable and invisible pain. Ara wept against the window, tears flowing down her face. She cried for him and for herself. She couldn't do anything, there was no truth to tell, what did she have to say to make Natasha stop? At long last, Jack's awful screams came to a pause, leaving him panting with exhaustion. Ara, taking long breaths, faced Natasha with a determined expression.
"Let me see him, and then I promise I will tell you everything!" The other woman sighed but finally nodded, pressing on her watch. A hole in the wall, just big enough for Ara to climb through, opened up leading into the next room where Jack sat shaking uncontrollably.
"Oh, and, Ara!" Natasha called from behind.
"I can hear everything you say."
Ara, paying no heed to what Natasha said, stepped through the hole, crouching a little at the same time, and rushed over to Jack. She went behind him and untied his hands. All of a sudden, he slumped forward onto the floor, his body limp and vulnerable. Placing her hands on his cheeks, Ara tipped his head to look at her. His eyes were red and sore, unreleased tears still held and disciplined. However when his gaze locked with hers Jack completely lost it. His sobs were quiet and pained, uncontrolled. Ara brought him closer to her and held him against her chest.
"Shhhhh," she whispered to him. She stroked the back of his head, waving her fingers through his golden locks. She lay her head on top of his, feeling his silky hair against her cheek.
"It's okay, Jake, you're going to be okay. I promise." Kissing him on the top of his head, Ara continued to listen to Jack's sobs.
Jack breathed in the smell of his love. She was the only one who could ever make a horrendous situation okay. How could someone so beautiful love him? He simply couldn't think of a single reason. Jack could bear the horrible piercing pain for the remainder of his life just to save Ara's life.
But look at him now. Crying like a baby, not exactly the image of the man he had always wanted to be. He had to calm down, he had to be strong, for Ara. Gradually he was able to stifle his cries. Looking up, Jack looked into Ara's eyes, imploring her to do his, and maybe last, request.
"Ara don't tell her anything. I couldn't bear to see what we have done crumble into nothing." She froze for a second, processing what he had said. At last she shook her head.
"No, I love you too much to let you suffer any longer!" With the remaining strength he had left, Jack pushed himself up onto his knees, raising his left hand to cup her cheek.
"Ara, I love you, and our love is forbidden and seen as wrong. But I don't care because you are my one true love. People wouldn't understand my feelings for you but that is because they haven't seen your beauty like I have. You make me realize that there is still a reason to live. You lift up my spirits in this horrible time. You have been there for me and I love you for it. You don't give a shit about what people say about you and that is one of the greatest things about you. You are a beautiful soul Ara, and when war broke out my heart tore apart when I watched you walk away from me. But you looked back and that had kept me going for the past four years." He took a deep breath before he continued.
"When I am absent from your presence I think of how I want to still be with you, talking and laughing, you are the only person who I can truly open to. You are just so trusting and approachable. You are so caring and it is amazing that you want to save me from more pain, but I would rather die of this torture than have everything we have worked on for so long be thrown away and never see the light of day again.." He offered a weak smile. Ara had never seen such a pitiful sight, his eyes still sad and his expression forced. Ara placed both hands on Jack's face and brought her head down to his, kissing him on the lips, lingering slightly. Pulling back a little she took a deep breath.
"I'm sorry Jake, but I just can't watch you suffer!" And with that she lay him down gently and stalked off through the hole again, pausing just in front of Natasha.
"I will tell you anything, just let him go.."
