Chapter 22
Hands clasped together and hearts pounding in their chests, Jack and Ara crept into the dark room. Whisperings intensified getting louder and louder, quicker and quicker.
"Get out of here while you still can!"
Neither of them knew what was happening, both clueless to their surroundings. Even Ara, who had helped with the defenses, had no idea about this level. Had no idea how this room worked. Had no idea how to get out...
Slowly the whisperings were getting more maddening.
"Leave now! You must or you shall die."
"Pay heed to our warnings! You must go!" The palms of her hands got sweatier, started to shake. Fear was taking over her senses, one by one, until finally all bravery she had when she came in was drained out of her. Halting, she snatched her hand out of Jack's, quaking on the spot. He looked back at her puzzled at the sudden gesture.
"What's wrong?" he asked. What wasn't wrong? Everything was weird and inhumane. The whispers certainly didn't sound normal... Backing up towards the door, Ara tried to block out the sounds, the noises.
"Please, I just want to leave! I want to get out of here!" Nodding, Jack slowly stepped to her, lifting an arm to calm her down.
"I understand you Ara, but we have come so far! I promise I will protect you, from anything, from everything. Please just come with me and help me achieve peace for this world, help me end this World's War." The whispering had stopped. It was as if he had said something that triggered their silence. Now the quiet was haunting, killing, torturous.
The pair looked around themselves, turning around to get full views. There still wasn't anything in the room, only darkness. No light.
A slithery sound crawled from behind Ara, getting closer and closer. However, being so dark, the room did not allow her to see what made that ungodly, eerie, heinous noise. It chilled her to the bone, unknowing what this thing could be. Suddenly a foul stench pierced her nostrils, too ghastly to describe with words. Ara gagged on the smell, choking on the foulness of it. The air was strangled from the atmosphere, no clean oxygen to breath, leaving her light-headed. Next she could feel a rough, prickling, snake-like object creeping up her leg, winding around her arms and twisting around her chest. Slowly it began to squeeze, pressing against her body. At this point Ara couldn't do anything, already half asleep from the sulfurs of the air. Then all of a sudden a certain crack echoed in the room. With it a cry of pain escaped Ara's lips; one of her ribs had been crushed. Unable to bear it anymore, she crumbled to the floor. It was antagonizing, not being allowed to clutch her side.
"Ara! Ara do not give up!" She had totally forgotten about Jack's presence. His voice was strained and breathless, obviously he was experiencing the same torture.
"I am here!" he said.
Finally the pain had gone, her whole body had gone numb. Her blood circulation had been completely cut off, her skin left cold as stone. As she closed her eyes, she pictured herself in the park under the sun, resting her head against the chest of her first true love. Slowly slipping away into unconsciousness, Ara muttered one final word:
"Jake..."
