Chapter 20

Undercover. It was the only way they could think of to get a meeting with the leader -Scarlett- as Ara had called her. He was dressed in a dress, too big for Ara, with a scarf wrapped around his face. It felt weird for him to be dressed in women's clothes but it had to be done.
Once everything was set and ready, Jack, led by Ara, was walking to the main area of the camp. There were loads of alleyways to walk through followed by streets and shortcuts. They only had a couple of close encounters but luckily they didn't look twice at Jack. He seemed to be fitting right in.
So far nothing had gone wrong, better than he had expected anyway.
The whole way, Jacks heart was pounding. Boom boom. Boom boom. The heartbeats were like cannons, firing two at a time. Loud and fierce. Sometimes he wondered if his heartbeat could be heard. But that wasn't possible.
Step after step. The more they walked the further the camp seemed.
Was she even taking him to the right place?
She must be, he trusted her.
Eventually they approached a load of tall buildings, specific windows lit a luminous yellow. Ara turned to Jack.
"This is when it gets difficult. Each new floor is guarded with a security door. To go past it you need to give a fingerprint, and then a hand print and then a face analysis." She glanced behind her checking that the coast was clear. Looking back to Jack her face was marked with pure terror and dread. He raised his hands and placed them on her cheeks, feeling the burning temperature of her skin.
"Everything is going to be alright, I promise."
Ara nodded. After checking one more time for people, Ara ran into the darkness with Jack running beside her.

The first door was easy to go through, just an item of clothing. Ara had already prepared and gave in a piece of fabric torn from an old shirt of hers. It was black, nothing special. After placing the material on the scanner the door opened, revealing the first floor. Another four to go yet.
Each floor had its own test that only the girls knew, and they all had a secret to pass through. Ara led through it with all confidence. Obviously this wasn't the hardest part. They say that if you go one direction all the way in the maze you reach the exit, it was true. It was left. Left, left, left, left, left until finally they approached the elevator door where she pressed her thumb on a smooth surface. A blue glow shone through her finger and the door opened. A corridor stretched out in front of them. It was endless and bare, stripped from any colour it might've had in the past. Ara and Jack walked through it, hand in hand. She could feel his thumb rubbing against her hand reassuringly. Together.
Looking up at him his face was tense unknowing of the tasks they have to do to get to Scarlett.
'Please let us get through this'
An end was soon coming to view, one of the tasks was yet to come.
"Jake," she whispered, "there will be a test before we reach the door. You must not let-" Suddenly the floor crumbled beneath their feet and soon Ara was tumbling down, her hand torn away from Jack's, towards the first test.

Jack sat up, rubbing the back of his head lightly. It was hurting a little bit but it was sharp. Slowly sitting up he couldn't see anything. It was pure black, only black, night black. There was no light.. But wait! Was that a beam of sunlight?
