Chapter 19
Jack's phone beeped showing its notification on the screen. Jack had completely forgotten he still had it. He was in the shower, too late to check it out now. After contemplation he finally decided to check it after. Whatever it was it could wait another five minutes. Continuing to wash his hair his mind wandered to the men back at the camp. He had meant to tell Ara about their orders last night but it was too perfect to ruin. Guilt pierced his heart, but there was nothing he could do about it now. Subconsciously he began to hum to himself 'Say Goodbye' by Billie Joe Armstrong. Soon his whole body was warm with the temperature of the water, unwilling to leave the comfort of the shower. The bubbles of the shampoo was overflowing as he scrubbed it out of his blonde hair, running down his arms. A few minutes later, after turning off the shower, wrapped his towel around his waist picked up his phone and walked out of the bathroom, closing the door behind him. The smell of bacon and eggs wafted in the air from the kitchen. He followed the scent where he found Ara cooking the breakfast in a pan. Even early in the morning her slim figure was perfect, her hair gorgeous and shining in the sun.
"Mmmm, that smells delicious!" he exclaimed. He drew a chair at the counter and leaned on his elbows. Jack watched as she continued to busy herself with the food. Without turning she said:
"Whatever happened in your dream I can handle, you know that right?" He sighed to himself.
"I know." Abandoning the pan, Ara walked over to Jack and slung her arms around his neck. She looked into his eyes intently and imploring.
"Then why won't you tell me what you dreamed?" With him sitting on a high chair she was just about the right height, making it impossible to resist kissing her again on the lips.
"Because," he said between kisses, "It's nothing to concern you with!" He stopped and put both hands on her face.
"I promise." Ara sighed and bounced back to the bacon and eggs, giving off the impression that it was the end of the discussion of the dream. Satisfied with the result, Jack pulled out his phone to see the text.
Jack you have one day to convince the leader of the women's camp that we are looking for peace. If you do not do this by tomorrow at noon then we are bombing the women, with you, without resistance. Do not let us down.
~Colonel
Jack, heart pounding, looked up from his phone. He had to tell Ara if he wanted to see the leader. But he couldn't find the right words. Grasping for the correct way to explain the situation, Ara lay down the plate of bacon and eggs in front of Jack, afterwards turning back to clear the kitchen. He looked at her, helpless and unknowing what to do. At the moment she was relaxed, swallowed by the calmness in the room. No sight could appeal to him more. He sighed. Unfortunately this was not something he could keep secret, especially from her.
"Ara," he began. She turned from washing the dishes and looked at him. Her eyes bore into his.
He pulled out the chair next to him. The legs made a noise against the floor.
"Sit down" he said. She did and drew it closer to him. Clearly she was clueless about what he was going to tell her.
"I was supposed to tell you last night, in fact that was why I was here, but we got.. Sidetracked." He swallowed. Jack couldn't look into Ara's eyes, he was too ashamed.
"The men.. They are planning to bomb your camp tomorrow at noon." He heard her take a deep breath but he still could not bring himself to look at her.
"But I received a text this morning saying if I convince your leader we want peace then they will cease to bomb you." Jack didn't know what to expect however what he got hadn't crossed his mind. Silence. They were sitting in the most deadly silence imaginable.
Eventually Ara's smooth hands were on his cheeks, raising his head to look at her. She was sincere but there was no horror or hatred in her eyes. When she spoke her voice was calm and steady.
"Jake, I wish you had told me last night-"
"I know, and I am sorry for that! I truly am!" She put her index finger over his lips, making a quiet 'ssshhhh' sound.
"What there is left to do is to see my leader, you can't do this alone!" Jack widened his eyes.
"But you will be known as a traitor.."
"But after this the war will be over and then we will be able to live together without having to be afraid any longer!" Reluctantly Jack nodded; this was the only way.
"You are not angry?" he asked.
"I was," she replied, "for a moment but then a fight wouldn't solve anything."
