Chapter 23
5:30 in the morning came around everyone was up and tired, all in their sports uniform. Eva had her hair down in two low pigtails, it revealed her ears, which Yaoyorozu was very fond of.
"Good morning, class," Aizawa greeted. "Today, we begin a training camp that will increase your strength. Our goal is to increase your skills exponentially so that each of you earns a provisional license. This will allow you to face the dangers that continue to fester in the darkness. Proceed carefully. Look alive, Bakugo." He caught a ball with one hand. "Try throwing that for me."
"Yeah, sure," Katsuki grunted. "Like in the fitness test."
"That's right," Aizawa confirmed. "When you first started school your record was 705.2 meters. Let's see if you've improved."
"Oh, I get it!" Ashido chimed. "We're checking our progress."
"A lot's happened to us the last three months," Sero said as Bakugo warmed up his arm. "Maybe he can throw it a whole mile now!"
"C'mon, get it, Bakugo!" Kirishima shouted.
"I've got this," Bakugo smirked. "No one, blink." He got ready to throw it. "Go to hell!" Everyone stood there taking the wave from the throw.
"That was 709.6 meters," Aizawa revealed. Katsuki grunted in surprise.
"Well, it's an improvement," Eva said as she tilted her head.
"Kinda disappointing," Sero grunted.
"You've had a single semester at UA, and due to your various experiences, all of you have definitely improved," Aizawa said. "But those improvements have mostly been limited to mental prowess and technical skill. With a slight increase in stamina thrown in along the way. Your Quirks really haven't grown that much stronger. Not on a fundamental level. That's why we're now going to focus on improving your powers." He smirked. "This'll be so hard, you'll feel like you're dying. Let's hope you all survive." They were all going their separate ways to improve their quirks. Todoroki grabbed her wrist.
"We need to get to our spots," Eva said looking back at him.
"I heard your conversation with Midoriya," Todoroki said looking away. "Are you sure, you don't see me as a monster, especially after the sports festival?"
"Not at all, Shoto," Eva assured, he looked back at her his cheeks grew a bit red.
"If you ever need someone to talk to about it--" Todoroki began as he put his other hand on top of hers.
"Go on, we need to improve our quirks," Eva cut him off. "I'm fine, it was a long time ago." They all got to their positions, Eva was attached to a cinder block, with her wings stretched out, and safely strapped down. This was so they would remain open, as she continually used her quirk. She was to keep using her quirk, to decrease the chance of losing flight, going way beyond her limit. Eva got placed on the edge of a cliff, so her wind could be shot out into open space. Below, was a cave, where Tokoyami was learning how to control Dark Shadow in the dark. It was a frightening sound. Soon, Class B was joining in the intense training, they were in complete horror when watching what Class A was going through. They trained till a bit after 5 pm. Once Eva was let off the thing, she stepped forward. She fell forward, falling onto someone's back.
"This training is definitely giving my tail a workout," a voice said, she looked up to see Ojiro hosting her up on his back, he then used his tail to keep her place. He made his way to the cafeteria.
"Thanks, Ojiro," Eva smiled lightly.
"You are always quick to jump to our rescue," Ojiro said. "Thought, I'd help you out as much as I can. "
Eva gently touched the furry end of his tail. "So soft." Soon, everyone was gathered at the mess hall. Everything still needed to be made.
"Now. Remember what I said?" Pixie-Bob asked. "We're not serving your food anymore!"
"If you guys wanna eat, you'll have to make your own meals!" Ragdoll added. "Starting with curry!"
"Yes, ma'am," everyone responded weakly.
"Oh, man, do you guys look exhausted," Ragdoll laughed. "But that doesn't mean you can coast by making sloppy cat food.
"Oh! I see," Iida breathed as he snapped out of exhaustion. "An important part of saving someone recovering from a disaster is providing for their physical needs as well as spiritual. Ah! This is a great opportunity! Let's make the most delicious curry in the world, everyone!"
"Yeah, okay," Everyone responded. Soon they got work, Eva got put in charge of keeping the fires alive, as well as cutting up some vegetables. She was currently sitting by where Urakaka was located, she was fanning a fire over.
"I'd be fine with a few poison berries," mumbled Eva.
"Most of us will die from that," said Izuku. "Think, you may be teaming up with people who can't." So everyone, but Eva just nodded.
"Hey, Todoroki!" Ashido called out. "Can we get some fire over here, too?"
"Bakugo. Use an explosion to light that," Sero instructed.
"This so beneath me!" Bakugo raged, he did as he was told.
"Too much!" Tokoyami exclaimed as Katsuki exploded it instead of starting a fire.
"Rely on others and you'll never learn to start a fire yourself," Yaoyorozu said. "We should focus on acquiring new skills. She used her quirk to make a lighter. "Yuki, help me make this fire stronger."
"Shiozaki," Eva breathed, a few vines swooped over and picked up the board of vegetables she cut. "Thank you!" She then went over to Yaoyorozo to use her wings to fan that fire.
"Here, let me," Todoroki said as knelt down, he lit Urakaka's and Ashido's fire.
"Wow! Thank you so much!" Urakaka chimed.
"Burn, baby burn!" Ashido encouraged. "Yuki, stretch a wing over here!"
"But not too hot, okay?" Urakaka requested, Todoroki smiled lightly as Eva slowly directed the wind.
"Yuki!" Kaibara called out from down the line.
"Coming!" Eva responded.
The sun went down, and the food was done.
"We did it!" the students cheered. They all began eating, Eva sat at a table with Iida and a few others.
"If I got this at a restaurant, I'd send this crap back," Kirishima admitted. "But after today, I'll eat every bite.
"Don't say that!" Sero scolded.
"Whoa, you're scarfing down, Momo!" Ashido noted.
"Yes," Momo agreed as she took a break from her food. "My Quirks transforms lipids into brand new atoms to create inorganic materials. That means, the more I eat, the more I can make."
"Like how poops works," Sero stated. Suddenly, Momo was in a corner of shame.
"Apologize!" Jiro demanded as she punched him.
"Okay, I'm sorry!" Sero exclaimed.
"Kota. It's time for dinner!" Mandalay called out. "Where are you?"
"Eva," Izuku said walking over to her with a plate.
"Oh, hey," Eva greeted; she patted a spot next to her. " I saved you a seat."
"Thank you," Izuku said. "But I'm going to go bring some food to Kota." Eva nodded. "Thanks for that conversation yesterday, I might have an idea what to say." He patted her on the head, before heading into the forest. Iida and Eva looked at each other and shrugged.
"So, uh, Yuki," Sero breathed looking over at her, she looked at him. "We wanna try something cool on the lake tonight, and we need you for it." Kirishima looked over with hope as well.
"Aren't you doing your extra lessons tonight?" Jiro asked, suddenly Sero went into his corner of shame.
"I'm sure we can try it at some point this week," Eva said. "Perhaps on the last day."
"Yeah!" Sero lit back up. "We are going over to the lake, we want to do our own version of water skiing."
"Before you can do it, we have to get Yuki to learn how to swim," Iida said as he made swimming movements.
"No fear! I will make sure it happens!" Kirishima assured as he flexed.
"Where are you going to get these water skis?" Jiro asked."I doubt they are going to be just lying around."
"Uh...hey, Yaoyorozu!" Kirishima shouted.
"How idiotic," Yaoyorozu groaned. "Fine." They all lit up. Soon they were all cleaning up. Eva and Shoto were cleaning the dishes.
"Iida does have a point," Todoroki said.
"On what?" Eva asked as she handed him a dish to dry.
"You should know how to swim before doing what you are planning to do," Todoroki said. "At least float."
"Nope," Eva denied. "Don't know how to do that either."
"When do you go underwater?" Todoroki answered.
"For cleaning myself," Eva answered.
"More dishes," Shoji informed as he set more into the sink, soap flew everywhere, along with some water.
"Thanks, Shoji," Eva smiled as she took the cups from him before he left.
"I can help," Todoroki offered.
"I have you drying dishes," Eva said as she handed him one.
"With the swimming," Todoroki corrected.
"Momo and Iida already put a training thing together for me either, learn how to swim from them, and I'm set for life," Eva smiled.
"I'll teach you to float then," Todoroki said. "You did hit me in the head with your antenna."
"I should let you teach me to float because my antenna came through and hit you?" Eva repeated as she looked at him.
"Yes," Todoroki grunted, looking down at her.
"The lake isn't too far away if we fly," Eva said going back to the dishes.
"About your flying," Todoroki began to dry a plate.
"Do you not trust it?" Eva asked.
"You've been flying all day," Todoroki informed. Eva looked at him weirdly. "I know you know what I mean...so give them a break."
"And for this floating thing?" Eva asked.
"We can use the hot springs," Todoroki suggested. "You can touch the bottom, right?" Eva looked away as her face started to go a bit red. "Or do you prefer the lake? It might be a bit late for us to go that far from the camp." Eva remained quiet, handing him a spoon, suddenly she felt something on her, a pile of soap bubbles. She looked to see Todoroki holding bubbles in his hand, without a word she splashed the soapy water toward him. It didn't take long for a full-on soapy, water fight to take form. Her wings got all wet, they were going to be out of commission for a bit. She's never seen Todoroki fully laugh or smile that much. Eva ended up slipping, taking Todoroki down with her.
"Sorry, Shoto," Eva apologized.
"It's alright," Todoroki groaned as he lifted himself off of her. "Eva...about your old hatred for humans." He was now on his hands and knees leaning over her, he gently put his right hand on her face, all while maintaining eye contact. "How often does it come and go?
"Hey," Katsuki greeted as he kicked the door open. "Here's the last of the--" They looked over as large amounts of rage came over him. After a few explosions, Tiger was now supervising as they cleaned and dried the place.
"He didn't advance on you, did he?" Katsuki asked as he walked her back to the girl's cabin.
"Not at all," Eva denied. "It was just bad timing when you walked in."
"Good," Katsuki grunted as he kicked a pebble. He then told her all about his training, and she did the same. He then grabbed her wings and started to flap them as fast as he could. Eva started laughing at how funny he looked while doing it. "Are they dry yet, dammit!" Eva laughed even more. "What were you and Icy Hot talking about?"
"He was just trying to convince me to let him teach me how to float," Eva answered. "It'll be good to know for whatever water ski activity Sero has in mind."
"I can teach you better than that loser," Katsuki raged as he held up a hand. "Right now! At the lake!"
"All right," Eva agreed, she grabbed him before taking off in the air. Katsuki was smiling big, he was laughing. He kept shouting faster. Eva always liked this side of Katsuki, he may be an ass, but she got to see that he was indeed secretly a bit of a softie. Once they got to the lake, they stripped down to their underwear, for Katsuki a pair of black boxers, and for Eva a orange sports bra and orange panties that had swirls on them. Katsuki stood in with water, it was ankle higher, he held out his hand to her.
"You get in by yourself, or I'll be of great assistance," waned Katsuki. Eva grabbed his hand, he guided her into the water. "Watch your step."
"There lots of tadpoles nearby," said Eva looking to the right. "Let's do it over here so we don't accidentally step on them." Bakugo had Eva lie on her back, putting his hand under. After a few minutes, Katsuki removed his hand and Eva went under, he quickly brought her back up for her to spit some water at him.
"Eva!" laughed Katsuki, splashing her with water. "Did you die?"
"Felt like it," said Eva, wiping the water off her face. After a few more tries, Eva finally got it.
"About time," grunted Katsuki picking her up on his back. "It's way past my damn bed time."
"Katsuki, what are you gonna do when you're a pro hero?" asked Eva. "Heroes go past 8:30 pm."
Katsuki glanced back at her. "I'll adapt and be number one." He bent down grabbing their clothes.
"Shouldn't we get dressed?"
"Most are in bed," said Katsuki giving her the clothes to hand on to. They chatted all the way to the girl's dorm, Katsuki dropped her off, then strutted to the boys leaving his clothes with her. Eva slipped into the room seeing the girls still up and playing cards.
"Why aren't you wearing clothes?" asked Jiro. "And wet?"
"I was down at the lake," answerd Eva going over to her luggage. "Katsuki taught me how to float, took 5 tries." She looked back to the see girls a bit speechles. "What?"
"Who's clothes do you have?" asked Hagakure.
"Mine and Katsuki's," answered Eva as if it was obvious. Not long after that, they turned in for the night, for they had more training in the morning. Eva's wings laid across the people who were less likely to toss in their sleep; they cuddled with it. Morning came around, and they were all back at their training positions. She then started to hear Aizawa speak.
"Don't lose focus," Aizawa instructed. "Each of you can move faster! And no matter what you're doing, just remember where you started from. Don't forget who you were before UA. Always keep in mind why you're sweating, and why your limits keep getting tested. That's what it means to improve."
"Hey, that reminds me, Mr. Aizawa," Izuku began as he went up to the teachers. "It's already the third day of camp."
"Weren't you listening?" Aizawa asked as he jumped down. "Stay focused."
"I was just wondering if All Might--" Izuku began. "I mean, the other teachers from UA will be joining us."
"Like I said before we came out here. To keep the camp a secret from the villains, hardly anyone knows where we are," Aizawa answered.
"That's why you get to work out with four pussycats!" Ragdoll shouted from the higher ground.
"And think about it," Aizawa continued. "We believe All Might is one of the League's targets, so we can't have him here. It's for your own safety. For better or for worse, that's what he gets for standing out so much." He turned to go. "Hah."
"Meow, meow, meow, meow!" Pixie-Bob began as she sat on top of crates. "More importantly, tonight's gonna be fun! We're pitting classes against each other in a test of courage. I know you've been training hard today. And later, you'll get to play hard! How's that for an award?"
"It just sounds like more training," Kendo answered.
"And training in the dark, no less," Jiro whimpered.
"Revelry in the dark," Tokoyami as he stood on the edge of his cave.
"How much can we do in one day?" Rin asked.
"Least we get to beat Class A, am I right?" Monoma laughed weakly.
"Don't slack now!" Pixie-Bob shouted. "Make sure you keep on pushing yourself as you work!"
"Yes, ma'am," Everyone responded.
"Remember...where I came from," Izuku said softly.
"Hey," Tiger grunted appearing behind him, Izuku whimpered. "You're not Plus Ultra yet."
"Right!" Izuku yelped.
After training, they were back making food, once again Eva was in charge of fanning the fires as she sat on the ground, using the cutting board.
"Whoa, Bakugo, you're really good with that knife!" Urakaka complimented, she was surprised. "It's weird."
"What do you mean it's weird?" Bakugo raged at her, as he picked up the speed. "How can you people be so damn bad at everything?"
"Look at that. He's not blowing stuff up," Kaminari pointed out.
"It's being channeled into the knife," Eva said as Izuku took her wing and started to fan a fire a bit faster. He then moved to start another one as Eva was given more food to cut up.
"I'm too tired for this," Kirishima groaned.
"How did it go with Kota?" Eva asked in a low voice.
"Not well," Izuku frowned as he put wood on the grill. "I told him about you without using your name, and he said perhaps you were right to not like humans and should stay not liking humans, especially superhumans."
"That bad," Eva breathed.
"Did you need All Might for a particular reason?" Todoroki asked walking over to them. "You asked Mr. Aizawa about him." He was holding a pot.
"Yeah. Um. I did," Izuku answered. "Because of Kota."
"Kota? Who's that?" Todoroki asked.
"Huh? The boy that's over there," Izuku answered as he looked back. "He's Mandalay's cousin..." Kota was nowhere in sight. "Hold on. Where did he go?" He went back to the grill. "Anyway, Kota doesn't like heroes. Actually, he hates the whole concept of superhumans, Quirks, and everything. I tried to talk to him, but I think I just made things worse. I was just wondering what All Might would have done to help him if he'd been here. I mean, what would you say to him, Todoroki?"
"It depends," Todoroki answered as he looked away.
"Of course! Sorry, I asked!" Izuku apologized.
"To have a complete stranger try to change your mindset sounds like a pretty irritating conversation," Todoroki continued. "What matters are actions. You have to show him what you're trying to prove. Right? If you're going to rely on words alone, then they'd better be incredibly powerful. What you say doesn't matter near as much as what you actually do."
"Eva said something similar the other night," Izuku said looking away. "You both are right. I went about this the wrong way. How can I, a stranger, say anything to him?"
"I don't know what your goal is when it comes to this child. But it sounds to me like you shouldn't be sticking your nose in a delicate situation," Todoroki said. "You tend to cut to the heart of people's feelings. It can be annoying."
"Right. Sorry about that," Izuku apologized.
"You guys! Your hands aren't moving!" Iida yelled at them. "We'll never make the best stew if you stop now." They all looked at each other and smiled, continuing with what they were doing.
