Chapter 15
Eva was now back in the stands, she was sitting in her spot. She sat between Izuku and Yaoyorozu. Everyone in her wingspans was gently holding on to her wings.
"The first match of the semifinals!" Present Mic exclaimed. "Both come from hero families, making this a battle of elites! From the hero course, Tenya Iida! Versus...His classmate, Shoto Todoroki!" The two stared at each other intensely. "Start!" Todoroki opened it with his ice move, and Iida ran around it. Shoto blocked him from going further with more ice. "Iida's been surrounded!"
"Come on Iida," Eva encouraged as she sat up more.
"Todorokis going in for the win already!" Present Mic exclaimed.
"Whoa!" Urakaka gasped as they watched Iida jump up. "A standing long jump!"
"Eva," Izuku said. "Can you--" She opened his notebook and jotted down a note on Iida's page.
"Recipro...Burst!" Iida exclaimed he slammed his leg, and Todoroki ducked. He jumped and kicked Todoroki on the back, slamming him to the ground.
"Look at the speed!" Present Mic shouted.
"That was a heavy hit!" Sero shouted over the gasps of the classmates around him.
"I didn't know he could kick like that," Kaminari sweated.
"Iida has many aces up his sleeve we don't know about," Eva said. Todoroki spread more ice on the ground. Iida grabbed the back of Todoroki's jacket, then sped to the other side. He suddenly gasped; he looked back.
"My muffler's blocked!" Iida exclaimed. "When did you--?"
"When you kicked me," Todoroki answered as he froze Iida. "I've mainly been showing off ranged attacks today. You forgot I could do precision moves, too, didn't you?" Todoroki stood up. "I was trying to dodge your Recipro. But it was too fast to avoid, even for me."
"Iida has been immobilized," Midnight announced. "Todoroki advances!"
"Todoroki moves on to the finals without even using his flames again!" Present Mic exclaimed. Eva saw that Todoroki was staring at his left hand.
"Poor Iida," Izuku breathed softly.
"I'm sorry brother," Iida whimpered.
"How are your burns?" Urakaka asked looking over at Eva as Todoroki was melting his opponent.
"They are fine," Eva answered.
"And your wing," Yaoyorozu asked. "Will you have to go through another shedding stage?"
"It was a slight burn, nothing to make them shed," Eva answered. Soon they were moving on to the next fight.
"And now, Bakugo versus Tokoyami!" Present Mic announced. "Bakugo's vicious rushes are unstoppable!"
"That thing is so damn annoying!" Bakugo growled as he ran trying to keep his distance from Dark Shadow. "Die! Loser!" He slammed an explosion onto Dark Shadow.
"Such brutality," Tokoyami grunted.
"Tokoyami has advanced this far with an almost unbeatable Quirk. But this time, it looks like he's on the ropes!"
"What is that bird brain doing?" Mina demanded. "He attacked super hard when he was up against us!"
"There must be a reason," Yaoyorozu suspected.
"Dark shadow," Urakaka breathed. "He can't go on the offensive because of all the light. This matchup couldn't be any worse."
"Most people don't know about his weakness," Izuku added. "Kaccahn may not have figured it out yet. "
"It won't take him long to do so though," Eva said. "He's quick to figure out quirks along with the weaknesses." Izuku nodded in agreement. Bakugo used his explosions to shoot up into the air. He was going straight down towards Tokoyami.
"Grab him!" Tokoyami shouted as Bakugo hit the shadow with an explosion. "Dark Shadow!"
"Wow!" Present Mic shouted as Bakugo evaded the move. "Bakugo leaps behind Tokoyami!" He landed, holding out his hands.
"Stun grenade!" Bakugo shouted before Dark Shadow could get closer to him.
"How am I supposed to commentate when I can't see?" Present Mic complained as everyone braced themselves from the aftershock. "What's happening?"
"Tell me Bakugo," Tokoyami growled as the smoke cleared. "Did you know of my weakness before?" Bakugo was on top of Tokoyami, Dark Shadow was behind the birdman in fear. Bakugo was holding Tokoyami's beak.
"I figured it out by attacking over and over again," Bakugo smiled evilly. In another hand, his explosions were continually going off. "It was a pretty bad matchup for you. Almost feel bad. But you're done."
"I surrender," Tokoyami grunted.
"Tokoyami gives up!" Midnight shouted. "Bakugo's the winner of this match!"
"That means our final fight will be between Todoroki and Bakugo!" Present Mic revealed. The two boys stared at each other.
"Man, what a bummer," Urakaka said. "Poor Tokoyami."
"I totally thought the bird would win for sure," Sero admitted.
"I guess that means his Quirk's not invincible after all," Kaminari gleamed.
"So light is his weakness," Kirishima noted. "Interesting. And Bakugo's the kind of guy that would exploit that."
"You were right about him not taking long to figure it out," Izuku said. "Kacchan is amazing."
"You chose a terrifying person to make your enemy," Kendo said as she tapped Monoma's head.
"Not all," Monoma denied. "Just luck that his Quirk worked so well against that guy."
"These finals have been one big showcase for Class 1-A. Dammit," Tetsutetsu growled.
"It doesn't matter who wins or loses," someone said. "These first years are amazing!"
"The draft is gonna be so insane this year," another said.
" I wonder what this match will be like," Izuku said. "Besides intense."
"Depends whether or not Todoroki uses his fire," Eva said. "Katuski is going to want the fire."
"We'll have to take notes for next time," Iida said walking up to them.
"Iida!" Eva gasped. He looked over at them with a smile, they smiled back. Suddenly he started shaking.
"Whoa! What's wrong?" Urakaka, Izuku, and Eva asked.
"It's just my phone," Iida answered calmly.
"Well, that's a relief," the three said at the same time. He stepped into the hall to take the call.
"How do you know Bakugo so well?" Kirishima asked leaning over to Eva. "I know you guys are close...but you seem to know each other's every move."
"He's way easier on you than the rest of us," Hagakure added.
"How come?" Ojiro asked. Eva looked at them, then at the stadium.
"He saw me at my weakest," Eva said. "Both him and Izuku...if weren't for any of them, I wouldn't be here right now." Everyone but Izuku gasped. "We were eight...Izuku was the first to throw a pebble at the bullies, but Katsuki is the main reason they left the country from what I heard."
"He was even terrifying as a child," Jiro grunted. The fire down below lit up, catching everyone's attention.
"The explosions can be terrifying," Eva admitted. "But at the same time, I know I'm safe." Izuku looked at her. "As soon as you gain more control of your quirk, I'll feel safer." Izuku sighed tilting his head in understanding.
"Welcome to the final battle of the UA High School Sports Festival!" Present Mic shouted over the fans. "In just a moment here, we'll see which first years come out on top!" Bakugo and Todoroki stared at each other. "Yes, it all comes down to this folks! From the hero course, Shoto Todoroki." The crowd cheered. "Versus his classmate, Katsuki Bakugo!" They cheered again. "Now begin!" Todoroki sent out his biggest opening ice attack of the day.
"Damnit!" Bakugo growled as he blasted his way through the ice. The ice stopped before the crowd this time.
"Todoroki starts with a crazy ice blast!" Present Mic commented. "Bakugo seems to have been completely buried! Is it possible we've already got a winner down there?"
"This isn't like when he attacked Sero," Izuku noticed as well. "The ice just now was more controlled. He's being cautious." There were muffled explosions.
"What's that terrifying sound?" Mineta asked.
"It's gotta be Bakugo's doing," Tsu answered. Seconds later, there was a huge explosion revealing Bakugo. Todoroki immediately jumped back.
"He used his explosions to tunnel through the ice like some kind of mole man!" Sero exclaimed.
"These two are insane," Kaminari commented.
"You've got some pretty powerful attacks," Bakugo said as he slowly started his explosions on the ice he was holding. Todoroki ran towards him. "But you're a bad aim." He blasted to Todoroki. "Try harder!" He side-blasted, then grabbed Todoroki by the head.
"He dodged his right side with a blast!" Izuku commented.
"Awesome," Urakaka breathed.
"Are you underestimating me?" Katsuki asked. "Idiot!" He threw Todoroki with a blast; Todoroki ice-surfed before he could get out of bounds.
"Todoroki surfs an ice wave to avoid going out of bounds" Present Mic commented. "Looks like fun." Bakugo grabbed Todoroki's left side.
"Use your left side. Do it, Shoto!" Endeavor shouted. Todoroki ended up just throwing Bakugo.
"Stop screwing around," Bakugo growled once he came to a stop. "What, do you think I'm not worthy of your fire?"
"Bakugo timed his explosions and grabbed Todoroki's left side on purpose," Aizawa explained. "He's done his research. His aptitude for this becomes for apparent with every fight."
"Interesting," Present Mic commented.
"Todoroki's doing well so far, but his attacks are too simple," Aizawa explained. "It almost seems like he lost his spark after he burned Yuki in their match." Eva sat more up, looking over the side.
"You bastard!" Katsuki growled as he sparked up his hands. "I'll tell you what'll happen if you make a fool outta me. I'll kill you!" Todoroki gasped. "I don't want there to be any doubt that I'm the best student at the festival. That's only possible if you can come at me as hard as you can! There's no point if you don't fight me with the same power you used against Deku and Eva! If you don't wanna win this, why are you even here?" He charged towards him. "Show everyone you're trying to destroy me!" Todoroki seemed unsure of what to do.
"C'mon Todoroki!" Izuku shouted. "Don't give up! Do your best!"
"That stupid nerd!" Bakugo smirked. He uses his explosions to launch himself up. Todoroki's ice melted away, as his fireside lit up. Bakugo started to use his explosions in a way, that would make him spin. Putting himself in his tornado. Todoroki seemed confident, but as Katsuki got closer, he became sad letting his fire go out.
"Howitzer Impact!" Katsuki shouted as he spun at Todoroki, he let off a ginormous explosion. The ice completely broke, and there was a strong aftershock.
"Who-ho-ho-hoa!" Present Mic exclaimed. "Bakugo combined speed and rotation with a huge blast like he used against Urakaka! He turned himself into a human missile! Todoroki didn't fire off the flame attack that woke us in his match with Midoriya and Yuki! So what has become of our two competitors?" The smoke slowly cleared; they saw Katuski on his front as Todoroki was knocked out, out of bounds, on his ice.
"You decided not to use your fire?" Katsuki raged. "No." Katsuki shakingly got onto his feet. He slowly made his way over to Todoroki. "Hey...Hey!" He ran over to the knocked-out one." He picked up Todoroki slightly by his shirt. "You stop messing around! This isn't a real win for me unless you try harder! It can't end this way. Now get up!" He started to get sleepy. "Don't--" It was Midnight's mist; he fell asleep, falling on the ice.
"Todoroki is out of bounds," Midnight said putting her hand up. That means...Bakugo is the winner!" The crowd cheered.
"And with that, the final match is officially over!" Present Mic announced. "The first-year champion of the UA Sports Festival is...Katsuki Bakugo from Class 1-A!" The crowd cheered. Once the field was cleaned up, all the first years were back down, for the award ceremony.
"The first-year students have completed all the events for the UA Sports Festival," Midnight announced. Fireworks went off as camera people repeatedly took pictures. "Now it's time to relax and enjoy the awards ceremony." The crowd cheered as more fireworks went off. Confetti blew everywhere, the stage was appearing, Katsuki was losing his marbles tied to the first-place post, and he had a muffle over his mouth. Not even Eva was able to calm him down.
"Whoa," Mineta whimpered.
"What the heck?" Jiro asked.
"He's been goin' nuts ever since he woke up," Kirishima explained.
"Nothing could calm him," Eva added.
"Man, Bakugo. Pull yourself together," Kirishima said.
"He's acting like a feral animal," Tokoyami said, as he stood in third place. Katsuki started muffling screams at a very sad Todoroki.
"Tenya Iida actually shares the third-place award with Tokoymani," Midnight explained. "But, unfortunately, he had to leave for family reasons. Gotta love those familial bonds." She posed, and Tokoyami became alarmed.
"Must you really?" Tokoyami asked.
"Too bad Iida couldn't be here," Tsu said. "He was so excited."
"Yeah," Izuku nodded.
***Flashback***
Urakaka, Izuku, and Eva were pulled off to the side by Iida.
"Urakaka, Midoriya. Eva," Iida began. "I know this is sudden, but I have to leave now. A villain got my older brother." The three gasped.
"Wait, you're saying Ingenium is hurt?" Izuku asked.
"Yes," Iida asked.
"Do they think he's gonna be okay?" Urakaka asked.
"I don't know many details," Iida said. "That's why I have to go right away."
"Of course," Eva breathed.
*****
"Now, let's break out the hardware. Of course, there's only one person worthy of distributing the awards," Midnight said. All Midnight started laughing as he appeared on top of the building, and fans started cheering.
"All Might's up there!"
"Citizens!" All Might shouted as he jumped into the air. "I am here with the medals!"
"All Might is the number one hero!" Midnight said at the same time as he landed. The arena was completely silent. "Ruined that, didn't I?"
"This group of first-years is so lucky!" someone said.
"I can't believe they got the best hero teaching them."
"So now, you are here All Might, why don't you start the presentation?" Midnight asked.
All Might laughed going up to Tokoyami first. "Young Tokoyami. Congratulations." He gave him the medal. "You showed great strength out there."
"Your words humble me, sir," Tokoyami said.
"However," All Might said as he hugged him. "You've more training to do if you are going to be able to fight against different kinds of villains. You're not going to be able to rely on your Quirk in every battle your face."
"Yes, sir," Tokoyami said as he looked at his meddle.
"Young Todoroki. Congratulations!" All Might cheered as he stood in front of the second-place winner. "I'm assuming there's a reason you didn't use your left side. Though it cost you the final."
"Midoriya opened my eyes during our match," Todoroki answered. "But when I hurt Yuki, I felt horrible for what I'd done and I started to doubt myself. I think I now understand a little about why you're so interested in him. I want to be the kind of hero you are, but my path isn't as clear as I thought it was. I have a lot to think about. And I still need to settle things with someone. Very soon."
"I've never seen this kind of look on your face before," All Might said. He hugged the young boy. "I won't ask for details, but trust yourself. I'm sure you'll work things out."
"Right," Todoroki breathed.
"And now, Young Bakugo," All Might said as he stood in front of the first-place winner. "This is a little much." He started to undo the muffle. "Well, you did what you said you'd do in the pledge. You're true to your word."
"All Might," Bakugo growled once his mouth was freed. "Winning first place this way doesn't prove that I'm the best one here!" He was in a complete rage. "Even if the world considers me a winner. I refuse to accept it like this!"
"In a world where we're constantly being compared to one another. There are very few who can keep their eyes focused on the top spot," All Might said. "You're one of them." Bakugo remained angry. "Please accept this medal. Even if you have to think of it as a scar. Something you'll never forget."
"I don't want that piece of garbage!" Katsuki yelled.
"C'mon," All Might encouraged as he tried to put it on, Bakugo fought for the medal to not be put on him.
"Get that trash offa me, you idiot!" Bakugo yelled. It got put in his mouth.
"Here they are!" All Might announced. "The winners of this year's sports festival! But listen closely. Any of you first years could have ended up standing on these podiums. Think about what you've done today. You've challenged each other, learned, and climbed even closer toward your goals of being pros. I think the next generation of heroes is proving to be our most promising one yet!" He put a finger in the air. "So I have one thing to say. I want to hear everyone yell it with me. You know what it. Thanks for your hard work!"
"Plus Ultra!" the audience shouted at the same time.
"What?" the students demanded over the boos. "That was the perfect time to say Plus Ultra, All Might!"
"Well, yeah, I guess but everyone did such a good job!" All Might defended himself. Once the festival was over, Class 1-A went back to school, with the other students. Iida's seat was empty.
"Nice work," Aizawa complimented. "You have the next two days of school off to recuperate. I'm sure the pros who watched the festival will wanna recruit some of you. We'll look over the draft forms and update you when you return. Get some rest. You still have a lot of training."
"Yes, sir!" the students responded. They all got up to go home, Eva and Izuku were silent for a bit.
"Are you fit for a flight home?" Eva asked.
"Just take it slow," Izuku said. "I can give you some pointers." Eva laughed, she gently grabbed him before going into the air. Once they got home, their parents praised them for how well they did along with scolding them for being so reckless. Eva was sitting in front of her mom's photo. Her mom had jet-black hair, and she had gold wings and red eyes. Her memory of her mother is so alive, some faint, and good. Eva's mom taught her so much, including how to fly.
"Something on your mind sweetheart?" her dad asked as he looked over at her. He was making hummingbird food in the kitchen.
"Do...do you think mom is proud of me?" Eva asked. "I know this isn't the particular path a fae takes and her words about meddling with humans."
"She's beyond proud," her dad said in a comforting voice. "She is so proud of you for not listening to her, I know it. You've come a long way. She would be your number one fan, pushing me to number two." Eva smiled at him.
"Thanks, Dad," Eva breathed.
"Come on in the kitchen," Her dad encouraged. "Help me make food for the squirrels."
"Where are Kozu and Dios?" asked Eva getting to her feet.
"They stepped into the Otherworld to help Grandpa Duckie with something," answered Dad as he waved his hand to signal to her to not worry.
"Gino?" asked Eva.
"He's with Grandpa Yuno," answered Dad, he looked at her. "What?"
"Can we go later?" asked Eva. "Or at least teach me how to get in and out, I am way old enough to know how."
Dad smiled. "Sure thing kid."
*****
The next day, Eva was applying ointment to her burns when her room window slammed open; and Bakugo climbed through angrily.
"That jerkwad," Katsuki growled, he stopped when he saw Eva.
Eva looked back at the mirror, she moved her hand, the burn mark on her side was the shape of Todoroki's hand. "In a strange way, I feel marked."
"Did you put some on your wing?" Katsuki asked as he walked over, he saw a few burn marks, they looked like scratches, and she shook her head. "You can listen then." He took some ointment and started to apply to the spots she couldn't reach. He went on a full rant about Todoroki and Deku.
"Katsuki," said Eva after he was done, he grunted. "Do you think I'm a monster?" Katsuki looked straight into the mirror, she lowered her head. "Dumb question."
"I figured that freak's words bothered you," admitted Katsuki, it wasn't just that, Eva's mind thought back to her convo with Todoroki. She looked back at Katsuki. "You are no monster, Eva, nowhere close to being one." He focused his eye on her, in seconds Eva was hugging tight, he happily hugged back. Katsuki heard a slight sniff, he pulled back to see Eva had tears in her eyes, trying hard to not cry.
"Wanna do some training?" Eva asked as he wiped away the few tears that escaped.
"What do you have in mind?" Bakugo asked.
"Let's pick up your reaction time," Eva suggested.
"Are you saying it's slow?" Bakugo growled playfully.
"With my top speed, yes," Eva confirmed. "You need to be prepared just in case there's someone as fast or faster than me and Iida."
"Bring it," Bakugo smirked.
