Chapter 4

where silence gets interrupted

━━━━━━━━━━━

There are days when you think you already know how your day will go, like everything is already mapped out in a predictable pattern you can survive without thinking too much. That's how I felt this morning. Normal classes, normal people, normal silence I'm used to. I even convinced myself that maybe yesterday didn't mean anything, maybe the note was just some stupid prank or something my mind is overthinking again. I wanted it to be simple like that. I always prefer simple.

But life doesn't really care what I prefer. It interrupts anyway.

The first half of the day passed like usual, but I noticed myself being more aware of things than I should've been. Every small movement felt slightly louder, every laugh from classmates felt slightly sharper, like my senses were tuned differently without permission. Luisa noticed it again, of course she did, because Luisa notices everything I try to hide even when I don't say anything.

"Okay," she said habang naglalakad kami sa corridor, "you've been quiet since morning. Ano na naman iniisip mo?"

"Wala," I answered automatically.

She stopped walking for a second and looked at me. "Sera."

I sighed a little. "I said wala."

She narrowed her eyes slightly like she didn't believe a single word but decided not to push it yet. "Fine. Pero if this is about Cal again-"

"It's not," I cut her off faster than I intended.

That made her pause, then she smirked slightly like she caught something interesting. "Oh? Defensive?"

"I'm not defensive."

"Hmm," she hummed. "Sure."

And that should've been the end of it, but it wasn't because the moment she said his name, I felt that same awareness again. Not because I wanted to, not because I was looking for it, but because somehow my mind already knew where to find him even without trying.

Cassian Kael Montenegro.

He was near the end of the corridor again, leaning against the wall like always, but this time there was movement around him. A small group of students passed by, talking too loudly, laughing too carelessly, and for a second I thought I would just ignore him like I usually do.

But then it happened. One of the students bumped into me. Not hard. Not dramatic. Just enough to throw me slightly off balance. My books slipped a little from my grip, and before I could fully process it, someone had already stepped forward from the side and caught them before they fell completely.

My eyes followed the hands first. Long fingers. Calm movement. No hesitation.

Then I looked up. It's him.

Up close this time. Not across the room. Not at a distance. Not from a place where I can pretend I don't fully see him.

Right there.

And for a second, everything around us felt like it slowed down in a way I didn't like because I suddenly became too aware of how close "close" actually is.

He didn't say anything immediately. He just handed me my books like it was the most normal thing in the world. No expression I could easily read. No unnecessary movement. Just... quiet control.

I took them slowly. "Thanks," I said, quieter than I intended.

He didn't answer right away. For a moment, I thought he wouldn't. Then he finally spoke.

"Watch your step," he said simply.

His voice wasn't loud. It wasn't soft either. It was just... there. Direct. Controlled. Like everything about him.

I nodded slightly even if I didn't know why my chest felt slightly heavier than usual.

"Yeah," I said. "Sorry."

That was it. No more words. No more reason for him to stay. But he didn't move immediately.

There was a second. Maybe less. Maybe more. I don't know. But in that small space of silence, I felt something I couldn't fully explain. Not comfort. Not fear. Something in between that didn't make sense yet.

Then he finally stepped back. And just like that, he was gone again. Like he was never really there in the first place.

But my hands still felt slightly different holding my books.

Luisa appeared beside me almost immediately after, like she sensed something happened even without seeing it clearly.

"...did he just-" she started.

"Yeah," I interrupted quietly.

She looked at me for a second, then smirked slightly. "Okay."

"What?"

"That just happened," she said.

"It was nothing."

She raised an eyebrow. "Sera, a guy who barely talks just saved your books."

"It's not that deep."

She leaned closer slightly. "Sure."

And I hated that she said it like that because now I couldn't fully convince myself it wasn't anything either.

The rest of the day felt different after that. Not in an obvious way, but in a subtle way that makes you more aware of your surroundings without knowing why. I kept replaying the moment in my head without meaning to, not the accident itself, but the silence after, the way he looked at me for that brief second, like he already knew I would catch up eventually.

Luisa tried to distract me later during lunch by making jokes, and for a while it worked. She talked about random things, exaggerated stories about classmates, even imitated one of our teachers in a way that actually made me laugh a little.

"Girl," she said between laughs, "if I fail this subject, I will haunt this school forever. Promise."

"Please don't," I said, still smiling slightly.

"Why not? At least I'll finally have consistent attendance."

That actually made me laugh more than I expected, and for a moment, everything felt lighter again. That's what Luisa does. She brings me back without forcing me.

But even while laughing, I still felt it in the background. That awareness. That small, quiet presence I didn't know what to do with yet.

Later that afternoon, I found myself walking slightly slower than usual when classes ended. Luisa noticed immediately.

"Okay," she said, walking beside me, "what now?"

"Nothing."

"You're spacing out again."

"I'm not."

She sighed. "Sera."

I stopped walking for a second.

"...I don't know," I admitted quietly. "It just feels like something is happening and I don't understand it yet."

She didn't joke this time. She just looked at me for a moment.

Then she said softly, "Then don't force yourself to understand it all at once."

I didn't answer immediately. Because I didn't know how. And when we reached the gate, I instinctively looked without meaning to. Cassian Kael Montenegro wasn't there anymore. But for some reason, that didn't make the feeling go away.

It just stayed... Quiet. Like it had already decided it wasn't leaving yet.
