Chapter One
The rain beat down on the roof of my house. I paced the floor with my hand on my glowing budder sword, ready to strike at a moment’s notice. A door creaked open and lightly closed. I stopped pacing and looked up. There was a figure standing in the doorway. With a blue and black spacesuit and helmet in hand, I knew it was Jason. He had gone with a search party to find Dawn, my beloved wife. She was captured by the despicable squids, knowing that they were starting a war. Knowing what my question was before I could even say it, he slightly shook his head. My worry quickly turned to pure anger. “Dang it!!” I yelled, not caring who heard, “Why, why would those creatures do that?!”
“They want you to give up early in the game so they have a guaranteed win,” Jason said quietly. I looked into Jason’s eyes and for the first time in a long time, Jason saw my eyes tear up. My anger was now sorrow. Jason came to my aid just before the tears rolled down my cheeks. His helmet had made a loud clank! as it hit the floor. My door opened and closed again. I had been too busy at the moment to see who it was, but when he spoke I had known who it had been.
Another hand rested on my shoulder. “I’m sorry, Sky. We tried our hardest,” Ty whispered quietly. They both helped me to a chair and I stayed there for what seemed like forever. Nothing would ever feel the same without Dawn at my side, nothing. Eventually, Ty and Jason had gone so I could calm myself down.
I finally felt like I couldn’t cry another tear. Be brave, Sky. Be brave. I kept on telling myself. I took one last deep breath and stood up. I looked out one of my windows and saw the sun rise in the blue sky. I couldn’t let my army down at a time like this. I slowly walked outside and was immediately greeted by a cold wind. I saw Seto helping the last recruit back into their home. When he was done, he finally noticed me. He came over to my side in an instant. Even now, after knowing him for so long, his ability to use magic still startled me from time to time. “Are you OK?” he asked silently. I nodded my head. “Tell everyone who can come that I am holding a meeting in thirty minutes at the Courtyard,” I said to Seto. He nodded and walked off.
Next, I went to the only place that I could feel at peace: a small forest located in my kingdom. Once I arrived there I could feel all of my feelings melting away like snow on a hot day. Sometimes it was nice to go back to the basics. I sprinted through the woods and felt the wind in my hair. I smiled and laughed. For a while, I felt happy, like when I didn’t have to worry about squids attacking. Or like when Jason, Ty, and I would play on parkour maps. My sprint slowed to a jog. Or like when Dawn and I would sit under the setting sun after a busy day…
I stopped at a little lake where a bench sat alone on the shore. I slowly sat down and thought about Dawn again. Her smile, her laugh, her eyes…
Barely shaking me out of my thoughts, a figure landed next to me on the bench. The figure sat down. “Hi, Jerome,” I said, still deep in thought. How did I know who it was? Jerome would be the only one hiding in the trees. “I heard about you know who…” he said. I nodded as another tear fell down my cheek. Not knowing what to do, Jerome just let me cry on his shoulder. After a while, I said, “You smell like parmesan cheese.”
Jerome smiled at my returning humor. “I have to impress the lady Baccas, Sky. Come on, let’s go,” he said. I nodded and got up. We sprinted out of the forest into the Courtyard. “I ordered a meeting,” I told Jerome. He nodded and said, “I’ll be listening in the trees.” I smiled and watched him run off. He easily found his home in the trees.
Now, everyone was here and they were all waiting on me. I pulled myself together and stood behind my budder podium. I gathered my thoughts and began to address the Sky Army.
