Chapter 7
The intruder wasn't easy to follow. At one moment, Will even lost sight of them completely. In a building where sound could travel everywhere, the engines of the turbolift gave away their position.
Navigating a building he didn't know would only ensure the intruder's getaway. If it wasn't for his recent trip to the turbolift with Ezra, he wouldn't have been able to retrace his steps from his quarters. The one place he did know where to go from. Having passed its level on the way to the Research Center, Will doubled back up the monumental ramp and took the corridor he remembered Ezra guiding him through and arrived at the turbolift just in time to see it pass him. The intruder onboard.
Hearing Will, they looked up, their face hidden in shadows. His current situation left him with two options. The first being the most plausible but tedious which was running all the way up or catching a lift with the intruder. A feat that was sure to leave some bruises. Instinct chose the latter, the ascent of the turbolift not really leaving him with a choice.
He took a couple steps, preparing to run. Unaware of his pursuit, Will reached the edge and jumped. Landing graciously had never been an option. In one dive, Will went crashing to the ground, colliding into the intruder and bringing them down with him. In account of its speed, he had barely missed it. They both sat up, the intruder appearing disorientated at first. Their orange bangs were just visible under the hood that covered their face.
"Who are you?" Will asked.
In answer, they whipped out a baton that appeared strikingly identical to the one Will had found in his quarters. Sharp blades sprang forth from each end. Will evened the battlefield by bringing out his own weapon from the depth of his boot pocket. But before he could activate the blades, the intruder charged at him and in one swing of their weapon, his own baton went cluttering to the floor.
Will found himself flat on his back, staring into the menacing blue eyes that currently held him in fear. For the next few seconds, they said nothing, their mouth and nose covered by a mask. Will fixated his frightened gaze on their blue eyes and orange bangs, being their only visible features. He became aware of his heavy breathing and attempted to steady himself under the confined prison of human arms, their weapon in one hand over their shoulder and a dagger clutched in the other, hugged tightly against Will's throat, knees trapping him on either side.
"I should be the one asking that question," they snapped. Will detected a female voice under that mask which didn't make his situation any less scary. In fact, her voice alone proved his situation to be even more frightening than necessary. Sunlight streamed through the domed, glass ceiling, casting a rim of light around her dark clothed figure as the platform neared its last stop. "You should be dead," she resumed, her tone laced with confusion.
"I get that a lot these days," Will responded.
She ceased her grip on him and backed up onto her feet. With the dagger away from his throat, breath returned to his lungs. Sensing all was safe, Will picked himself up, being sure to keep his distance.
"They told me you were dead," she countered. It was self-reassurance, as if denial of sight would suddenly empower words to correct her sense of mind and erase Will from existence.
"That makes two of us," Will said.
"But you're not him, are you? The Will I knew never agreed with Project Infinity. But you're here. Working with them-"
"Is that why you blew up the lab?" Will asked.
"Immortality is wrong. It's evil," she snapped. "There is life after death. But we just need faith for that. Humanity is dooming themselves to extinction by being the Creator of a world that already has One."
"I can't say the same from where I come from," Will told her. "Where I come from is not nearly as advanced as this city," he elaborated.
"What is that supposed to mean? That you're some sort of Time Traveller?"
Will scoffed. "That's a first, but no. In fact, I'm still trying to figure out how I came here myself."
The turbolift clicked into place, signalling the end of a discussion Will found himself leaving with more questions than answers. That's also when the intruder noticed Will's weapon stranded on the platform and started towards it. He watched her bend down and pick it up, turning it around curiously in her hand.
"If you're not the Will I know, then why do you have a weapon of the Infinites?" she asked.
"The Infinites?" Will repeated. "I found that in Will's quarters. What are the Infinites-"
"I'm afraid time has run out," she said.
Will put out a hand to stop her before she could run off. "Wait. At least tell me who you are," he said.
She stopped in her stride. "Don't worry," she assured. "You will see me again."
She tossed the weapon back to Will which he caught, nearly dropping it out of surprise, with the thought in mind as a weapon of her kin, she'd refuse to return it. So when she hurried off the platform, Will returned the gesture by remaining in his stead and watched her disappear through the skybridge on the top floor of the atrium.
Gone until preordained to meet again, Will took the turbolift back down to the Research Lab. He exited the atrium and almost ended up bumping into a disgruntled Ezra. The two quickly collected themselves.
"Please tell me you caught them," he said. For the intruder's sake, Will realised he had to bend the truth, even if it meant deceiving Ezra after all he'd already done for him.
"They were too fast," he lied.
Ezra let out a sigh of frustration, running a hand through his frizzy white hair and letting it drop at his side. "Perfect," he announced. "As if one mystery wasn't enough. On top of your own case, we now also have the identity of this mysterious intruder to solve."
He began to pace up and down, which was never a good sign. Then instead of voicing his thoughts, he stole a last glance at Will and with a despondent gaze, trudged past him. Will did a half turn, taken aback by Ezra's unusual response. His stiffened gait said a lot more than words.
"Ezra?" he asked. When Ezra didn't stop, Will hurried after him. "Where are you going?" His stride of silence began to unnerve Will. "Ezra-"
"The Research Lab is destroyed," he grumbled. "There is nothing more to do other than relaying the news to my father and salvaging anything we can from the lab. We can't afford to have any more hindrances that will delay the progress of Project Infinity."
"Do you agree with the premise of Project Infinity?" Will asked.
"It's not about what I think," Ezra explained. "My opinions don't matter. They only matter when they have scientific value."
The Command Centre in sight, Ezra was about to turn the corner when suspicious movement caught Will's eye through the glass panel on his left and he pulled Ezra back by the arm. Ezra fell down, tripping over his own feet. Will stopped his fall by grabbing his shoulders and spinning him around before he could go crashing into him.
"What you do that for-"
Will shushed him into silence with a finger to his lips. Then with both hands firmly on Ezra's shoulders, Will pointed up at the glass panel that they now crouched under. Annoyance quickly changed to one of understanding when Ezra took a peek above the windowsill.
"What's father doing in the Boardroom?"
"Let's find out," Will answered in the same hushed tone.
Before Ezra could stop him, Will crawled past him. Around the corner, he stood up and found himself blocked by an electronic door panel that only granted access with a keycard. Nothing that Ezra wouldn't be able to help with. Will waved his arm at Ezra which successfully caught his attention.
"Psst. Ezra," he hissed. Ezra understood in a heartbeat and crept to Will's position, bringing out his keycard in the process.
"We just have to wait for him to go into the Control Room so we can sneak in without him seeing us," Ezra explained. They only had to wait for a few seconds until Ezra could give Will the keycard. "Alright now," he said.
Will took the keycard and quickly inserted it in the slot that the electronic door provided. The door responded with a beep of acceptance and opened. A pair of hands pushed Will inside. They made it safely behind the workstation up on the platform with a few seconds to spare.
The wall monitor turned on and Bill Grayson re-entered from the Control Room. For a moment, Will feared they had been caught when Bill looked in their direction, noticing something amiss.
"Hello?" he asked.
Will quickly ducked behind the workstation that did well to cover them where Ezra's unforgiving eyes made him think twice about his next move. Below the workstation, Will sensed the room light up behind them and turned back up ever so slightly to peek over the countertop, Ezra in lead due to Will's recent mishap of nearly giving them away. The voice that followed sounded eerily familiar.
"You must have a very good reason for calling me on such short notice," the voice said.
"I meant to call you sooner," Bill admitted. "But we've had a few setbacks."
"Nothing you can't handle, I hope."
It felt as if years had passed since Will had last seen the man through the screen. The wavy mullet hairstyle did little to uphold his youth especially when unkempt and grey, while his thin cheekbones aged him by five years. Will didn't even want to know what cybernetic contraption attached to the right side of his face. His only constant feature that remained were his green eyes. If it weren't for his voice, Will wouldn't have recognised him.
"I believe we may have found the answer to Project Infinity," Bill resumed.
The man leaned forward in earnest anticipation. "Go on," he said.
"Your brother," Bill answered. "William Dark."
