Chapter 6
"What were you thinking?"
As Will feared, Bill had found them in The Raven's Eye, after realising that they had been misled and eventually arriving at the right location where they were forced to return to Imperial Headquarters. Now Will felt as if he had interrupted a private conversation or an argument, one could debate, between father and son.
He stood a few feet behind Ezra, keeping his distance from Bill's impending lecture.
"I was thinking that if it was really who you said it was, then as Will's friend, I had the right more than anyone to be out there-"
"It's because you were his friend that I didn't want you involved in this-"
"I was involved in this from the minute Victor Dark was declared murdered," Ezra retaliated.
Will let them have it, knowing they wouldn't let him stand idly by for much longer. Bill sighed, pinching the bridge of his nose as a gesture of expressing what little hope remained for Ezra due to his recent act of incompetence.
"After Victor's passing and Will's rebellious escapade, I saw how you were hurting. Your well-being concerned me and so I did what any father would have done. Keep you from involving yourself further into something that no one your age should have to go through. What I did was to protect you, Ezra."
"Yeah well... It's a bit late now with Will being dead to protect me, don't you think?" Ezra implied. "If the situation was reversed, wouldn't you want to know what happened if it was your friend?"
"I don't have friends, Ezra," Bill reminded. "Remember, you're only on the Intelligence Support Team because you're my son. Just think how'd it look to the council if they found out about this. They'd call me unfit to lead. I'd have to make a cover story for what happened-"
"Just like you made a cover story for Victor's death?" Will didn't know how much more of this he could take.
"Victor's not dead," Will said.
That was enough to get their attention. It wasn't a surprise that Bill tried to justify his feelings. "Your grief is understandable, Will," he said.
Will shook his head. "You don't understand. That's not what I mean." Bill and Ezra eagerly awaited his explanation. "Your Victor may be dead, but my brother is still alive. You've seen it yourselves. I'm not from here-"
"Will-"
"How can you still be so ignorant after everything you've seen? Why are you still in denial?" Will asked. It hadn't made sense before, but the more he thought about it, the more he realised that Victor's experiment had been a success after all. And Will was a result of his hypothesis. As for what had happened to Victor himself... "Victor should be here," Will mumbled. More to himself than to Bill and Ezra.
"You're not making sense, Will," Bill said. "What are you suggesting?"
"He's the answer to Project Infinity," Ezra answered.
"I don't understand," Will said. "Can someone please explain-"
"Ezra," Bill reprimanded.
A moment of understanding reflected in Ezra's eyes and yet despite Bill's warning, he chose to persist.
"He was going to find out sooner or later. Why not tell him now?"
Will took it upon himself to end the staring contest between father and son.
"Yeah. I think it's about time someone told me what Project Infinity is as well," Will second.
They stood in a dome-shaped Command Center, equipped with different stations ranging from Communications and Operations to Engineering and Damage Control. Central to where Bill was standing, a Display Monitor had been assembled in the wall behind him. He turned it on with one switch of the Control Panel. A map appeared on the screen. A map of Infinite City.
"Pandora's Box," Bill started. "Think of Project Infinity as a stronghold for keeping all the evils at bay. It's because of this that Infinite City is the way it is. A Utopia that only improves with every monster we lock away." Will remembered him using similar words before. "Hunger? Violence? Equality? We've resorted to all of those. All that remains is immortality. Known as Project Infinity. Now you can see why your sudden appearance aroused such panic. We're only trying to make the world a better place to live in. We're not your enemy, Will."
"I never said you were," Will said. Bill nodded in earnest.
"There may be some hope for you yet," he replied bitterly. Will decided not to take that personally.
"Why didn't your Will agree with Project Infinity then?" he asked.
"How much did you overhear?" It was a significant response.
Ezra intervened before Will could come up with an answer that would hold himself accountable for overhearing a private discussion right outside his quarters. Regardless, disappointment was never a reaction one sought to experience.
"Will never did follow the rules. He tended to be a bit of a rebel. Always getting himself into trouble," Ezra explained.
"But why?" Will repeated. "Why all the rebelling if what you're doing is for a good cause-"
"You have to understand, Will," Bill informed. "Not everyone agrees with Project Infinity. As the governing body of Infinite City, Will and Victor's parents showed their support by stepping forward as Project Infinity's first two volunteers. However, shortly after its first launch, a fatal incident followed, leaving Victor Dark as the oldest, to take up the mantle as Chancellor of Infinity City. As for Will... Will never quite healed. If anything, he blamed ParaDark Enterprises for his parent's death. To make things worse, Victor's arrangement to train with us in the Intelligence Support Unit did little to change Will's perspective of ParaDark Enterprises. In fact, we even had our suspicions that he was working with someone else, trying to find a flaw in Project Infinity, anything he could, to shut us down. You've seen for yourself how that turned out."
Will didn't disagree. Much contemplation was going on in Will's mind and Bill was considerate in his next words.
"Take a few minutes before you join Ezra in his next shift," he suggested. "I understand this is a lot. And while you still have a lot to learn, we still have a lot to discover. How you arrived here, for one. Perhaps you might even consider being a part of Project Infinity." Will doubted he meant willingly. "All in due time," he added.
Will remained neutral in his response. Partly because he had nothing to say. Ezra stepped forward. "What will happen to our Will then, father?"
"He will be disposed of," Bill ensured. His sudden change in tone was rather impressive when it came to applying the appropriate mood with its respective words. "The city has been through enough. Anything else and we will lose their trust. Part of our job is maintaining peace. Not a word of this will escape these walls, understood?"
Ezra nodded his head. "Yes father," he said. He turned towards Will and grabbed his arm impatiently. "Come on, let's go."
Will was pulled out of the Command Center and into the corridor. They didn't get too far when the sound of the alarms blaring distantly around them brought them to an unexpected halt.
Ezra instantly let go as realisation mixed with dread appeared on his freckled face. "It's coming from the Research Lab," he said, quick to pinning its source. Then to Will, "Follow me."
He ran ahead. To wait for Will's response would mean to waste whatever time they still had to prevent further disaster. They took off down the monumental ramp that spiralled down from the entrance of the Command Center passing various levels, one being their quarters, and came out on the first floor.
Will saw the sign, Research Center as they hurried underneath it which took them through a linear sized corridor. An acceptable adjective when compared with the colossal scale of the overall building itself.
With disaster in sight, the steel gateway stood open, its hinges jammed stuck. Will could only imagine the worst. The smell of fumes was strong, but Ezra pressed through it, covering his face with his hand. Will proceeded to do the same and stepped over the threshold.
The Research Lab was in total chaos. As if a freak accident had gone off. Through the smoke clouds, various broken vials could be seen lying in pieces on the countertops and damaged floor along with other lab equipment. Electrical sparks went off in uneven interludes.
They took a right turn at the end of the lab and entered a second room which proved to be in worse condition than the first. The term 'worse' was used lightly. Hazardous was terminologically correct. To put it visually, small fires burned where the ceiling sprinklers couldn't reach.
Panicked footsteps entered the scene. Both Will and Ezra looked forward to see a woman emerge from the wall of smoke that occupied the closed-in laboratory. It's only escape being the door behind them. She fell out of the toxic barrier and collapsed into Ezra's arms, battered and scraped. Ezra leaned in to help her up.
"There... there was an explosion," she stammered, her voice hoarse. Ezra's words did little to comfort her.
"It's alright. You're safe," he said. "Tell me, are there any others?"
She shook her head. The simple action alone being too much in her current state. "No... It's just me-"
A sound of glass shattering cut her off. Startled, Will glanced over his shoulder to catch a glimpse of movement dash by through the hazardous scene back in the first room. He would have pinned it as a trick of the eye if it had not been for that red hair. Will did what he did best, run after them while Ezra's shouts faded behind him.
"WILL!" he shouted.
But Will knew. They hadn't been alone. He was sure of it. Someone was behind all of this. And there was only one way to find out.
