Chapter 3
Ta'lali was learning quickly that Charity had two very different moods.
She was a trusting girl, believing everything she perceived to be holy, but if someone questioned her beliefs then she switched to a merciless tormentor, capable of hurting others with a smile on her face.
Ta'lali stared at the mirror across the room. Without regular doses of affection, she was losing weight fast, and the dress that had been close to bursting at the seams only yesterday was almost hanging off of her shoulders at the moment.
Ta'lali grimaced at the gaunt doppelgänger in the mirror, hating the way her bones were jutting out.
Outside, Charity hummed to herself as she walked toward the 'treatment chamber' with a bucket of water in one hand, and Ta'lali's antlers in the other.
Charity opened the door, and walked in.
" Good morning! How did you sleep?" She chirped.
Ta'lali didn't respond, not realizing that Charity was expecting and answer until she was backhanded across the face.
" I didn't sleep. I can't because I'm so hungry." Ta'lali responded, her voice sluggish.
Charity produced a vial of liquid from her robes, disgust evident on her face.
" One of your victims liked you a lot. She donated this."
Ta'lali's chest started heaving.
" Please! I'm so hungry! Please!"
Charity grimaced, uncorked the bottle and held it just out of Ta'lali's reach.
" No. You will learn to have restraint. You will be saved. So you can starve for all I care."
Ta'lali's face fell, and Charity hid the vial, dipped a rag into the water, and started to clean her wounds again.
