Part 2

The next four months was a jumble of people, packing, trucks, unpacking, and people. Every day felt like three at once, and sleep was the only time that I felt at peace! To calm myself, I would try to go sit by the tree in our backyard, but the little twig brought with it no comfort.

Everything started to feel like a lost cause but my parents are too positive for their own good, so I try to keep that bubbly energy.

It's nearing my birthday when I get a letter back from the fast food place I applied to work at.

"They only respond if it is good news," Mother insists.

I begin to tear open the envelope, but all I feel is dread. I don't want to settle into a life here, I don't want to watch people order that fake ice cream... I don't want this job nor this life! No matter what I thought, the employers thought me to be a perfect employee and I was hired to start the day after my birthday.

I bike to work, that cloudy morning, and there aren't many cars in the parking lot or the drive thro. I find a spot to lock my bike to, a lamp post that is out of the way of any foot traffic. With a deep breath to calm my nerves, I head inside.

As I predicted, there is almost no one inside. Just a woman ordering and one boy at the register. He appears to be my age, but I already recognize him. My letter came with a picture of him, stating that he, Josh, would be my manager. I would shadow him until I learned the ropes and then would learn to work alongside him in this horrible place.

I really hope I get my letter back from the college before I have to ever work with him.

Yes, the magazines would classify him as "cute" or maybe even "handsome", but all I see is a city slug that doesn't know the real value of ice cream.

Once the woman gets her order, I walk up to him and he greets me before I am able to say anything, "Welcome to Frozen Burger! How may I- wait, are you Amanda? My new little bee?"

His voice is more excited then it should be at this point in the morning. Before the sun completely shows its face, it is respectful to just be quiet and kind to the people around you. Well, at least he was somewhat nice about it. "Yes," I answer without hesitation. "I am she."

"Wonderful!" His happy, cheery, voice is starting to get on my nerves already. "Hop on back little bee and I can give you the morning tour. Jerry! Take the front."

I don't bother to look over to see who this "Jerry" is because I have no doubt in my mind that he and I will get introduced sooner or later anyways. As instructed, I come behind the counter and put on the name brand apron that Josh had gently tossed to me. He's not too much taller then me, but he seems to be silently judging my casual outfit and thrown back hair like that wasn't the normal work attire.

I wasn't going to go to my first day in a dress just to get a ketchup stain on it!

As prompted, Josh gives me a tour of the fast food place. I already doubt that it is up to code, but I don't say a word about it. Also, he introduces anyone that we come across. Everyone gives a happy wave or smile in response, so they must like him for some crazy reason. I notice that I am the only female worker at the moment, but it doesn't bother me all that much.
