Chapter 10
I saw the captain frown as he saw them rounding the corner on their first lap, and he stopped them as they came over and a couple of them put the poles on the ground, and he looked at them and got in their faces.
"What did I say about the water" he snapped
"Not a drop gone, Sir!" everyone said at the same time
"And what happened" he yelled and they stayed silent unable to determine a way to answer "you lose almost half of the water in the buckets, and now thanks to you there is less water to drink" a person went to pick up his pole again, but the captain went over and put his foot on it
"No you guys are going to do a hundred push-ups and sit-ups" he said and the group fell to the floor in exhaustion "did I say rest, no if you rest again I will double the amount" (I find it really Ironic that I am writing about this when I want to go into the Marines, and this is more than likely what it would be like) and those that weren't doing push ups like the others rolled over and started, and after a couple more minutes of silent complaining. Everyone was up and standing like I had been for the past ten minutes and the captain looked at me and I was surprised to hear his thoughts.
Now what am I going to do with you he thought and I raised an eyebrow, and he must've noticed because a wall blocked his thoughts but I just ripped through it like paper, but I didn't invade his memories due to me not wanting to see his past.
"Everyone's dismissed to their cabins" I turned to leave but his voice cut into my thoughts and his body blocked my path
"No you stay" he said and my team looked back and snickered as they walked towards cabin three "I want you to follow me" he turned as quickly as he said it and I followed him without hesitation wondering where he was taking me. We stopped at the edge of the force-field and I noticed that it looked thinner than it was when I first arrived.
"What do you see" he asked "only a few are able to notice the change"
"A few, really, the field looks thin as paper" I looked at him shocked and then stuck my hand through, but I didn't feel the nice warm air like I had, but it was cold on the other side. I quickly pulled my hand back through to see that my fingers were gathering ice on them already. I lit my hand on fire and burned off the ice, but it didn't seem to melt until my fire turned black. The captain slightly breathed in sharply when he saw black fire, and he pointed at my hand that I was now moving around and flowing to get the blood moving again.
"How'd you do that" he asked
"I've discovered many different powers that I have, and I am going to go on the other side and see what is happening" I said and started to go through, but my nose barely touched the surface of it "now what" I turned around facing him annoyed
"I am not going to let you go in there, from what I've seen you might just be our best fighter we've had so far, and I am not letting that chance just pass us by" he said
"I am going" I growled loud enough to make him flinch "if you want to come then I will keep us both safe, but if you don't then I'll see you in ten at least"
"Fine, but I expect you back in no less than twenty and if you aren't then I am going in there to search" he said and I sighed before nodding and lighting my entire body on fire and stepping past the barrier.
"The first thing that hit me was cold, everlasting dark cold that reached my bones, and I was hoping that I wouldn't find any trouble otherwise I might not be able to keep myself warm, and come back before the time. I've found out that my powers were endless, but they did take my energy away as I used them. The first thing that I felt was cold, but that wasn't the first thing I saw. There were humanoid shapes in the distance, and as I got closer I could see that they were people. A large group of people in running stances looking forward like they were running from something, and I saw that one of them was poised to be helping a person move, but they had frozen and their hand was detached from their body.
I stayed in human form to use less energy and followed the steps and trail of frozen blood deeper into the forest. Then I heard the sound of snarling and yelling and I saw a man holding his side with one hand and a sword in the other and he was trying to fight off the beasts. I examined them and they looked like wolves, but without any hair and their skin was black and cracked due to the icy spell put on this area. It was the only thing that I could come up with because one area couldn't freeze in a mere second, judging by the people in running form, unless it was due to magic. I made a gun out of metal but the metal froze as soon as it was summoned into this cold air, and I was starting to wonder how the person was still even alive.
Then I saw that they also had their body on fire like I had but his fire was yellow and close to going out, and his wound had frozen his hand to his side. I used my fire and made a bow and then I pulled back it's fiery string and and arrow formed in it. Then I let loose that one and it hit a creature and seared through it making it explode into pieces of ice, and the others didn't have time to react before they had a burning hole in their heads and they had exploded too. I quickly ran over to the man as he fell and I held him close to me making my fire combine with his and his eyes which were about to close and give up opened and he looked like his strength had been renewed, but he didn't have time to look at me before he fell into my arms unconscious from fatigue.
I picked him up and examined his wound, which I had to burn off the ice and detach his hand from his side to burn the wound closed. Then I hoisted him over my shoulder and turned back to go the way I came, but the landscape had changed. I thought about shifting to a dragon but it would only make me a beacon to monsters tracking the scent of burning flesh. I herd a howl in the distance and decided to take a chance. I didn't know how to flame-travel with a person in tow, and do it safely, and I couldn't shadow travel because there was no shade from what I observed in the field and if the trees were moving like I thought they were then if I traveled to the tree by the people it wouldn't---. The people, they had a shadow and I don't think that they were moving, I jumped into a dark patch and then slowly walked in the direction that I was going.
Walking using this power was like going through a portal, but I couldn't use my portal powers in the magic forest, but I hated walking through the stupid shadow world. It was just as cold and unforgiving as that forest and I didn't know where I was going until I felt a warmth, I just passed the barrier. The cons, I had no idea how far or how long I was traveling in the shadow realm without feeling a difference in the place that I wanted to go here. I saw a shadow to my left and I jumped in it only to pop out of the side of the cabin, and I heard a yell of freight and I looked over to see the captain and a few others on the floor smelling of fear and shock.
"Do you know how long you were in there, um,"
"Silver" I said putting my hands in the shadow of the wall and grabbing the hands of the guy that I found, and slowly dragging him through while the capt was yelling at me for my stupidity and the fact that I was gone for almost an hour, and that he'd gotten a team of fire elementalists to go in an get me. His talking died down as soon as he saw me struggling to get the dang man out of the shadow realm, but it was like playing tug of war with a brick block cemented in-between a steel wall.
"How are you doing that" someone asked
"Doing what" I growled trying to pull the guy through
"Popping out of a shadow, putting your hands in a shadow, and I don't know sticking your--" I put my head through and saw that I was holding two bloody arms attacked to a long chain of darkness. I growled and dropped the hands to only meet them getting pushed off of an invisible thing, and then the darkness moved and I saw a flash of white before something bit my shoulder and pulled me through. I screamed in pain as I was pulled through, and I cursed the stupid thing out for eating the person that I was trying to save while punching the stupid dog in the face. I tried to light my hand on fire, but it wouldn't then I remembered that in the shadow realm fire doesn't work.
"You lucky stupid thing" I cursed as I punched it's face over and over as it dragged my through my own shadow, and then I cursed when I realized where we were going. I fought harder and punched it in the throat but it still had no effect, and then made a knife of silver and stabbed it in the throat, but the stupid knife broke. My knife, breaking, no way, and then I thought about ancient myths and monsters that could travel through shadows, and Hellhound was the first thing to pop up in my mind, and I've read about frost hounds and fire hounds. They both were killed by either another bite from a shadow creature or by ripping off the head and dispersing the soul. I couldn't do anything, but I made my teeth razor sharp just as we passed the barrier of cold.
I cursed some more as I saw other hounds waiting a little ways sticking their heads through the empty space and growling and tearing at the shadow in hunger. I grabbed it's big bulky leg and pulled it farther forward as it lifted it to go back and then I bit down as hard as I could and a howl was heard as it shook with pain before liquefying into a pile of muck. I got up and started to run as fast as I could for the shadow that I went through the last time. Then I passed the slight warmth of the barrier and saw that I had a long way to go yet. I looked back and cursed again when I saw that the rip was big enough for them to go through one at a time and they ran as fast as they could, which at the moment was a-lot faster than me in this realm. Here I was as fast a a normal human and they were about as fast as me not in this realm.
I felt a pain enter my leg and I saw an pitch black arrow in it like it was made of the shadow's themselves, I looked back again to see a figure at the other entrance with the hounds prowling back and forth like they were waiting for a command.
"I will catch you my queen, and I will be rewarded a great deal when I'm the one to bring you for the sorcerers" I felt fear for my first time and then I saw him get another arrow and one second it was in the bow the next I felt a burning pain in my other unhurt shoulder. I was not going to be the source of this evil even if it killed me. I slowly pressed on and I felt a pain in my left calf. Another arrow.
"The cool thing about these is that they don't cause bleeding or death in this realm, and I could fill you with arrows till you looked like a porcupine, but I am under specific orders not to harm you too much" I heard the sound of a chain and then my world went in slow motion as I felt a pain in my chest threatening my heart. Then I felt a big yank and I went flying back a couple feet, but a couple feet in this realm is very important. I saw a new entrance just behind me and I heard the man yell with annoyance and I was tugged further.
"I am not going to fail" I heard him say "fetch" I herd howls and the pounding of feet as I crawled towards the new entrance, and I barely got my hand through before I was yanked back. It disappeared for a second before it appeared again, and this time a little closer, and I could stick my arm through.
The mans screams echoed behind me and the pounding became faster, the chain got tighter, and I reached back and I was surprised when I felt some thing there.
"No, you do that then you'll be ripping a part of your soul out" I could tell that the man was lying with fear of failure clear in his voice and I looked back before smiling and ripping the arrow out of my chest. Then I was able to get my other arm out and something grabbed onto me, I tightened my grip on them and let them pull me out. Then three more pains went through my chest and the tugging increased, he was having his stupid hounds help him, so unfair.
I got my head and body through with the clinking behind me as the chains of darkness came out with me, and solidified. Blood started to pour out soaking the ground and then another pain in my waists made me scream again. My vision started to blur and I couldn't distinguish the realms apart. Then I blacked out and my pain stopped as well making me grateful.
Alex's POV
The captain summoned us to go out into the mysterious part of the barrier that was weakening, and we were by the cabin when she just popped out of no where and then she put her arms in the shadow again while the capt was yelling at her for her stupidity. Then the put her head through when Drake was almost finished asking his question and there was a flash of black before her body went rigid and she was dragged back into the shadows. He went over and tried to reach our arm in, but just hit the side of the cabin wall.
"What happened? What took her back in?" the capt asked and we shook our heads and then the next couple minutes was filled with arguing before Drake said something.
"Do you think that maybe if we created a shadow we would be able to help her out" he said and everyone looked at him in shock before I yelled for someone to get something to block the sun and make a shadow.
"Okay does anyone know about the shadow realm" I asked and again Drake raised his hand
"We are taught about it when we are young by our parents, and mine told me about beings claimed be evil, darkness, or both that could use it as a way to travel and usually take people without being known about, but people on the outside could hear them. I never actually thought that it was true" he looked at the ground and then snapped out of it as capt said something
"Look we need to get her out so how do we do that" he said frantically.
"Okay so if we assume that she's going to the barrier then we need to run a mile before he make the shadow" he said and just then the people of cabin one came out with a mattress. Me, capt, and two other soldiers took a side and Drake started to run towards the barrier with us in tow.
"Here, set it down, and then we wait" we set it down and it cast a shadow, and growls and a scream was heard.
"What can we do" I whispered to Drake "can't you go in and get her"
"No I can't yet, it is forbidden to learn how to shadow travel, and even if I did it would take me a decade at most to actually be able to go in, but I would only be able to go a mile at most before needing to come up" he said and the growling stopped
"I will catch you my queen, and I will be rewarded a great deal when I'm the one to bring you for the sorcerers" we all froze at this statement, what did he mean by queen, but another scream heard by a female voice interrupted our thoughts.
"The cool thing about these is that they don't cause bleeding or death in this realm, and I could fill you with arrows till you looked like a porcupine, but I am under specific orders not to harm you too much" the sound of clinking was heard and then another higher, longer high pitched scream was heard and I could only assume that he had shot her in a vital spot.
"I am not going to fail" the man said and then he said fetch and there were howls and growls, a hand appeared in the shadow before being yanked out and we dropped the mattress in shock, but quickly hoisted it up again, and this time an arm came through and Drake left his spot making a soldier take over for his spot and grabbed her hand and pulled. Someone ran over with a pole and we re-positioned the mattress and put the pole on it. Drake was pulled forward with a grunt and a scream echoed throughout the shadow. Her scream, and then her head and body was seen with three long dark chains trying to drag her back, and then two more flew out of the portal and struck her in the sides. There was blood everywhere, and after one last long shrill scream that surely would've caught the attention of the others in the academy, she stopped moving and her head went limp and me and Drake kept on dragging her out against the force that was trying to pull her back in.
"Guys, help" I growled pulling a hand and others started to come around and grab her arms as well and then we all were dragged forward as feral growls echoed throughout the darkness. Then we finally got her out and people grabbed the chains to keep them out.
"How do we get rid of these without hurting or killing her" I asked Drake while straining at a chain.
"We need someone with light powers to come over and sever them" another scream went through the shadow and the sound of something metal dragging in the darkness was heard as something came towards us.
"We need the light elemental and fast" Drake said and then a portal opened in the air and someone dropped through it. We looked at Silver and saw her go limp again and the portal disappeared. The capt went up to her and asked her who she was
"Aurora, my names Aurora, and one second I was in my class room studying and then a purple thing opened under my feet as I got from my seat to sharpen my pencil. The next thing I knew I'm dropped out of the sky here"
"Where do you go to class" capt asked and she looked around before pointing at a building known as the power training area, and we sighed. Silver had brought us a level three light trainer who wasn't even in complete control of her powers.
"I went there and--OhMyGoshWhatIsThat" she stepped back looking at the chains and Silver with fear.
"That is why your here" capt said "we need you to direct beams of light at those chains, so that we can free her"
"Who is it" she asked suddenly curious and the dragging sound got closer, a-lot closer.
"Guys we need to hurry, its getting closer" I yelled behind my shoulder still straining against the chains of darkness, and I heard the new-girl's breaths get fast and uneven.
"I-I don't even know how to use my powers fully yet, much less melt something" she said quickly filled with fear and anxiety
"We don't need to have you shoot beams of light at it necessarily" Drake said "you just need to concentrate your power into your hands and then come up and separate the chains from the shadow"
"Can you do that" the capt asked and I saw her nod her head still anxious and scared, but after a little concentrating her hands started to glow and she came up and did what he said, and the chain going to the shadow evaporated, but the chains connected to the arrows didn't. When she was done she fell to the floor in exhaustion, and we dropped the mattress just as the sound of running reached through the shadow.
"I will get my queen and you'll be sorry this ever happened" a loud voice made us turn around to see a person in a black and purple cloak made of the shadow realm, and a huge six foot sword dragging on the ground behind him, but as soon as he came he left and we quickly picked up Silver and the girl and rushed them to the school hospital. The entire way there all I was thinking as I felt Silver's blood going down my shoulders was that she should be dead, but she isn't, and why did he call her 'my queen' twice.
Thanks for reading and I'll have another chapter out soon, a little longer 3842 words, 5-4-18.
